Mickenzi Askin started making 

baby bundle packs to donate 

to mums in need of some 

help. 

The packs contain 

blankets, lotions, 

lip balms, toys, 

creams, clothing, 

bottles and 

more. 

“Each pack 

is different but 

all are designed 

for mums to be 

or struggling 

mums with 

newborns to one-year-olds. The 

only thing we ask is 

what the gender 

is as we don’t get 

enough gender 

neutral items.

based on who 

needs it most and 

if we don’t 

have any 

available,

offer

who can give 

the right support.

no money and, at that 

time, there was not a 

lot of help out there 

for young mums.

THE SOUTHERN end of Milns 

Rd could be closed to improve 

safety near the busy intersections 

of Sparks and Sutherlands Rds. 

If it goes ahead, motorists will 

have to take nearby Collier Drive 

to connect to Halswell Rd. 

The Sparks Rd end of Milns Rd 

will be turned into a cul-de-sac 

and a new road/intersection will 

be built 180m up Sparks Rd. 

This moves the intersection 

further from the bend, improves 

visibility, and simplifies the layouts 

for both Sutherlands/Sparks 

and Milns/Sparks traffic. 

The closure was discussed at 

last week’s Waipuna Halswell- 

Hornby-Riccarton Community 

Board meeting and is now up to 

the city council to approve. 

Halswell city councillor Andrei 

Moore said the key thoroughfare 

between Sparks and Halswell Rd 

will not be Milns Rd. 

“That will be Collier Drive, 

which will connect Sparks Rd 

with the Dunbars/Halswell Rd 

intersection.” 

He said the exact timing of the 

project will be development-dependent, 

but the work on the road 

last week was changes to road 

markings, which are low-cost and 

minor in nature. 

City council transport 

operations manager Stephen 

Wright said the closure of 

Milns Rd will be part of the 

resource consent conditions 

for the adjacent subdivision 

development, which is currently 

being processed.

Gnome away from home for Judy 


JUDY RICE, a self-proclaimed 

‘mistress’ to her gnome Winkle, 

is about to store her collection 

of indoor and backyard buddies 

and embark on a country-wide 

adventure. 

The 69-year-old Sockburn 

resident has collected more than 

400 garden friends since 1990, 

but when she and her partner 

Murray Wilson move into a 30ft 

Rockwood caravan, only a few 

will join. 

“The house is on the market, 

and we have already placed a 

deposit on our caravan. I’m 

getting old – if we don’t go now, 

we will never do it. 

“Winkle, his girlfriend Trixie, 

Moonshine the Joker and a few of 

Murray’s will come. The rest will 

go into storage – they won’t be 

happy about it either.” 

Judy hopes to be off by 

June, picking up Murray from 

Ashburton and then following 

the warmer weather around the 

country. 

Having left in November 2022 

for a five-month trip across the 

North Island, she is not new to 

travelling for long periods. 

“It was on my bucket list for a 

long time and came to fruition 

after my mother died from agerelated 

issues in January 2022 and 

my husband’s death five weeks 

later, from surgery complications 

and dementia. 

“I’ve lived in Christchurch for 

about 45 years and I needed to go.

GNOME HOME: With only

into the caravan, the rest of 

Judy’s buddies will go into 

storage. 

I looked around while planning 

and thought, can I do this by 

myself? Then I noticed Winkle 

winking at me from his shelf. 

He makes me laugh, and other 

people laugh too. ” 

Some highlights of the prior 

trip included meeting the 

captain’s right-hand man on 

the Cook Strait ferry, flying in 

a plane, riding a double-decker 

bus, meeting a robot waiter and 

sandboarding. 

Judy documented their 

adventures in a blog, Judy and 

the Travelling Gnome, which is 

written from the perspective of 

Winkle and has attracted more 

than 17,000 viewers worldwide. 

She has also written a children’s 

book, Winkle Goes on Holiday, 

and an adult story, Winkle the 

Travelling Gnome, which is being 

worked on by her editor before 

hopefully going on sale this year. 

“I’ll keep writing as long as 

people keep reading – so another 

book is planned and will be about 

the new adventure.”

Drumming up 

deep connections 


“MUSIC connects communities” 

is the reason registered music 

therapist Liz Bolwell is running 

an all-inclusive group called 

ReSet Performers ‘24. 

The group has been set up to 

encourage those aged 9-16 from 

migrant families to connect and 

participate in their communities. 

Bolwell said she started the 

group after thinking about the 

potential barriers to connection, 

like language or culture. 

“It’s about building 

relationships between 

individuals, groups and music 

and building up the self 

confidence and self-esteem. 

Another goal is to value people 

resettling in New Zealand and 

respecting ethnic differences. 

“We use African drums as a 

tool to express ourselves, learn 

vocal and instrument skills and 

use rhythm for wellbeing.” 

She said it is great to see the 

diversity among participants and 

their joy in working together 

musically towards performance 

opportunities later in the year. 

“Some are experiencing 

drumming on African drums for 

the first time and an opportunity 

to use microphones to develop

vocal skills.” 

Bolwell started the group in the 

first week of March and has four 

to six members already – but the 

group is looking for more. 

“I’m hoping to have about 12 

performers but we can take on 

up to 20. I’m looking forward to 

building up the group and then 

performing in community spaces 

from July to October. 

“The whole idea is to attract 

children, collaborate with 

community musicians and 

hold workshops which focus on 

different cultural influences.” 

The free music therapy 

group is funded by the city 

council’s Creative Communities 

and is supported by the Oak 

Development Trust, which assists 

migrant families to transition 

into their new homes. 

“(They) have been very helpful 

in providing us a creative space to 

grow and flourish. Music therapy 

is about building relationships 

alongside others with established 

therapeutic goals and outcomes,” 

she said. 

The public is invited to join 

in a group session from 4-5pm at 

the Riccarton Baptist Church on 

April 10, during Music Therapy 

Week.

who is five-an-a-half, my second 

pregnancy, I had a partner 

who wasn’t physically there so 

I basically raised my children 

alone. 

“I also wasn’t producing any 

milk so a stranger donated 

theirs to the hospital. 

“They’ll never know how 

much I needed that and I can’t 

ever thank them. So I wanted to 

give back because I know how 

much it’s needed.” 

Askin knows situations 

change all the time, having 

made a “quick move” from 

Geraldine to the city about five 

years ago. 

“I moved without having 

much of anything but my 

children into my nana’s house. 

“I ran to St Vinnies in Hornby 

and said to the ladies there: ‘I 

really need some help’. 

“They were about five minutes 

from closing the shop but I 

explained my situation and they 

stayed to help me with sheets, 

clothing and much more. 

“Just what I needed, so it gives 

me joy someone else might get a 

smile and a bit of support out of 

this too.” 

Askin sent her first six packs 

out last week and said the 

mums were very grateful to 

receive them. 

“It went very well. 

“We’ll keep doing bundles 

as long as we keep getting 

donations. 

“I didn’t think it would take 

off but after asking my small 

following on Instagram, we’re 

receiving donations from all 

over New Zealand.” 

When she’s not making packs 

or working on her business, 

Sustainable Mama, which 

focuses on creating sustainable 

and natural products like 

wooden baby rattles and healthy 

skin creams and lotions, Askin 

volunteers at the St Vincent de 

Paul shop in Hornby. 

“I started volunteering about 

four weeks ago. It’s a nice wee 

cycle, going back to help the 

beautiful women there.”

made the New Zealand 

team for the junior world 

championships in Peru in 

August.

School student Cooper 

Wightman, 16, and recent 

St Thomas’ alumnus Daniel 

Prescott, 17, are among seven 

runners who have achieved 

the qualifying time for the 

1500m event, but only two 

can be selected. 

The pair, who both run

in a personal-best time of 

3min 47.11sec, and Prescott 

was fourth 3sec behind 

Wightman. 

But, even if selected, 

Prescott said he is unlikely to 

be able to travel to Lima due 

to upcoming United States 

college commitments. 

He has also already been 

selected to represent New 

Zealand at the world crosscountry 

championships 

in Serbia which start next 

Saturday. 

“I’ll just be focusing on 

that now,” he said. 

Prescott is a member of 

the six-strong New Zealand 

team who will run in the 

under-20 race – and the only 

one from the South Island. 

“It’s going to be a good 

international experience,” he 

said. 

He said the 

competition in the 

race will be fierce. 

“There’s a lot of 

quick people from, 

for example, Africa. 

And usually they 

always go out and 

they’re the ones that 

are leading, so I’ll 

just be doing the 

best I can, I guess. 

“I’ll see what I can do.” 

Prescott has “three or 

four” US college running 

scholarship offers on the 

table for the school year 

starting in August, but hasn’t 

decided where he’ll go yet. 

His potential college 

commitments mean he 

is unlikely to be able to 

represent New Zealand at the 

junior world championships 

if selected. 

“I was hoping to (be able 

to travel to Peru), but I’ll 

have my commitments to US 

colleges,” he said. 

“But just to know that I’d 

be selected, if selected, would

could now come in as 

a complication would 

be if there was a New 

Zealand athlete who’s 

overseas on a scholarship or 

something, who happened 

to stake a claim by running 

the qualifying time overseas 

in the next three or four 

weeks.” 

Drury said Wightman 

is looking forward to 

potentially getting the 

opportunity. 

“He’s got to the point 

where, I think, he’s keen to 

go and measure himself up 

against the best under-20s 

in the world. I’m sure he will 

have another opportunity 

in a couple of years time but 

you never know the sorts of 

things that life might throw 

up.”

performing motor, but livelier 

with the PHEV power train. It’s 

mostly under load when driving 

over hilly terrain when the 

engine’s energy levels begin to flag 

and progress slows. 

A 245Nm war chest of torque at 

3600rpm doesn’t really get the job 

done that convincingly. Pleasantly 

smooth and responsive on flatter 

going, there is enough thrust to 

safely waft past slower moving 

traffic. 

A well resolved eight-speed 

sport mode constant variable 

transmission is one of Mitsubishi’s 

best. Step shift control changes 

do a fine job of mimicking a 

conventional automatic, with 

few slurring gear shifts that were 

once an undesirable trait of these 

transmissions. 

A generously proportioned 

passenger compartment earns 

top marks for spaciousness, 

practicality and being a relaxing 

long distance cruiser. Upping the 

comfort ante on the test vehicle 

were heated seats, three-zone 

automatic climate control, and 

rear door sunshades. 

A 12.3-inch full digital driver 

display is Mitsubishi’s first fullscreen, 

full-colour liquid crystal 

display, projecting a variety of 

information on to a large screen 

with exceptional clarity. A 

customisation function enables a 

variety of information to be easily 

combined and displayed. 

The test vehicle’s six drive 

modes are accessed via a centre 

console mounted selector, and 

range from normal to snow, and 

almost everything in-between. 

The suspension tune is very 

much in-tune with our often 

exacting driving conditions 

and topography. It makes an 

immediate impression with 

its strong road holding, even 

when you quicken the pace over 

demanding undulating roads. 

While the striking 20-inch 

alloys make a powerful visual 

statement, the ride quality suffers, 

with more suspension noise at 

low speeds over high frequency 

bumps found on our urban roads.
