PHOTO: SIMON VARE Hurunui skiffle show By SHELLEY TOPP The One Man Skiffle Machine, Christchurch musician David Thorpe, is taking his love of skiffle music to two Hurunui schools next week. David, amultiinstrumentalist, who describes himself as amusical creative with ‘‘a brain like afirework display’’, will hold skiffle workshops and perform his Backyard Skiffle Band Show at Leithfield and Amuri schools with students from Sefton, Hanmer Springs, Waiau and Waipara schools also attending. The Wednesday, March 27 and Thursday, March 28 workshops are for musically inclined years 5to8senior students who will be taught abasic skiffle song, and shown how skiffle instruments can be played and made from basic household instruments. After the hourlong workshop David will perform his 50minute BackyardSkiffle Show which will include the workshop participants performing their songs. The workshops are aprecursor to the CanterburyFolk Festival being held at the Waipara AdventureCentre this Easter, on March 29 to April 1. All primary school children from the Hurunui district have free entry to the festival on Saturday, March 30, as long as there is apaying adult accompanying them. ‘‘The free entry has been offered to give the children an opportunity to be part of this festival and add to what they have experienced during the school workshops,’’ David says. ‘‘It is hoped this school’s programme will become an annual event alongside the folk festival with different guest artists each year visiting the Hurunui schools. Thanks to the support of Hurunui Creative Communities funding for getting this project under way.’’ David will be running amorning musicmaking workshop, starting at 10am, on March 30, demonstrating how skiffle instruments can be made from household objects and later he will use the instruments in his Backyard Skiffle Show, starting at 1pm. David established Backyard Music in the United Kingdom during 1998, but has been based in Christchurch since 2003. ‘‘`Backyard music is an ethos. ‘‘I like to keep things in the `backyard' by keeping it local, keeping the focus on community and drawing on the local talent around me. New Zealand made,’’ he says. He is aselfemployed, fulltime musician, tutor and writer with an impressive portfolio including thousands of gigs in all sorts of places from England to New Zealand, South Korea and Australia’’. He was also in Ian Costello’s Black Velvet Band for 11 years, has taught harmonica workshops for corporate team building events, written asong for the NZ Red Cross and had atop10album. He enjoys projects that ‘‘lean in aquirky direction’’ and has apassion for skiffle, a mix of blues, jazz and country music which emerged in the 1920s, has its roots in AfricanAmerican culture and is played using unconventional, sometimes homemade, instruments. ‘‘Without skiffle, John Lennon wouldn’t have met Paul McCartney,’’ David says. ‘‘Imagine aworld without The Beatles.’’ The pair are said to have first met in 1957 at achurch fēte where John was playing with his skiffle band, The Quarrymen. David's shows and workshops take anostalgic journey back to that time during the 1950's ‘skiffle boom’ in England when teens turned everyday household items into great music and went on to make rock history. ``Let’s call it amusic and history lesson rolled into one, with atouch of mayhem and abig dollop of good humour,’’ he says.
