Community turns to chat
app to report rising crime
• By Dylan Smits
WHATSAPP groups are
being used to monitor crime
and bring neighbourhoods
together around community
safety.
Over the past year residents
have set up these text chats
in communities between
Ferrymead and Scarborough
to address what some see as
a lack of police presence in a
time of rising crime.
“Neighbourhoods have
changed over they years,”
said Sumner Village group
organiser Susie Lomax.
“You used to know everyone
on your street.
“Now the best way to
connect together and keep
each other safe is these
WhatsApp groups.
“It’s really vital.”
The Sumner Village group
has about 50 members and
Lomax is appealing to people
living in other areas to create
more.
WhatsApp groups in
Scarborough and Richmond
Hill had also attracted
a significant number of
members. The groups function
as private channels where
residents are encouraged to
report criminal or suspicious
activities to their neighbours
using text or footage from
their home security cameras.
Police statistics show there
has been a spike in crime in
Sumner over the past two
years. From January 30, 2022,
to January 30 this year, 371
victimisation crimes were
reported in the suburb, an
increase from 273 between
January 30, 2020, and January
30, 2022.
Victimisation crimes are
incidents in which a victim
is involved, such as burglary,
theft, robbery, assault, sexual
assault or murder.
A police spokesperson
responded to claims they had
a lack of presence in Sumner
and the surrounding areas,
saying all instances of crime
should be reported “to help
inform our deployment
patterns’’.
The Richmond Hill
WhatsApp group has about
80 members, said organiser
Graeme Baird.
Road must be saved before
being ‘cut off’ by rising sea
• By Dylan Smits
SAVING Governors Bay-
Teddington Rd from rising sea
levels is a priority for users of the
vulnerable route.
Diamond Harbour
Community Association
president Graeme Fraser said
implementing climate change
adaptation options to preserve
the road is important for
residents and visitors.
“If it was gone we’d be cut
off completely. We’d have to go
the long way around Gebbies
Pass, which would be quite the
change.”
The association supports
either flood proofing the road or
moving sections of it to higher
ground but says the city council
must act before significant sea
level rise.
“It would be good to see some
concrete steps taken fairly soon
because the road to Diamond
Harbour is already quite
vulnerable to flooding when
there’s high-tide.”
The low-lying road is a focus
area for city council’s draft
adaptation pathways options
because it is vulnerable to
flooding and critical to accessing
the southern end of Lyttelton
Harbour and the eastern bays.
City council statistics show
the road is used by about 2000
vehicles a day.
The options proposed by
the city council’s coastal panel
are closing parts of the road
and building anew on higher
ground, flood proofing the route
by raising the road or building a
sea wall, or closing the road and
improving other routes around
the harbour such as the Summit
Rd to Gebbies Pass Rd route.
A study by GNS science
estimated sea levels around the
harbour could rise by 38-47cm
over the next 30 years.
The road sits at sea level and a
coastal panel report identified it
as a high-risk area for flooding
Each Office is Independently Owned and Operated. NZSIR Canterbury Limited (licensed under the REAA 2008) MREINZ.
if no adaptation measures are
taken.
Teddington Quarry manager
Barry Blatchford believes the
solution is simple.
“It’s pretty basic, really, all they
need to do is lift the road up.”
Purau residents use the road
as their main route between the
settlement and Christchurch.
The coastal panel member
for Purau, Paul Dahl, said it
is crucial to implement an
adaptation plan before the
flooding risk becomes too high.
“They will have to do work
before that, or it will be closed
and we’ll have to go the long way
round.”
Long-overdue upgrades set to
transform neglected courts
• By Dylan Smits
IN A BOON for sports-goers
in Akaroa, upgrades to the
recreation ground’s worn out
tennis courts will likely start in
spring.
The city council has budgeted
$170,000 to re-asphalt the three
courts, put up new fencing
and carry out any necessary
groundwork for the area’s only
three public tennis courts.
The Banks Peninsula Sports
and Recreation committee wants
to raise an additional $100,000
to astroturf one of the courts and
transform it into a multi-sport
surface.
“This complex will again
become a real asset to our
community and allow people
to play a variety of sports and
do a variety of activities here in
Akaroa,” said committee member
Jan Whitehead.
The courts are currently in
poor condition with an uneven
surface, she said.
“All of them have got crack or
sunken or they’re just not safe to
use really.”
Whitehead said there have
already been expressions of
interest in using the astroturf
ACCOMPLISHED: Mark Smith, chair of the Banks Peninsula
Sports and Recreation committee at the Akaroa tennis
courts. His group have been advocating for needed
upgrades for more than six years.
court from junior hockey teams.
“The idea for the future is just
getting as many casual teams
using them as we can.”
The Akaroa Croquet Club,
netball teams and pickleball
players have all expressed their
support, and an interest in using
the new upgraded courts.
The upgrades will help revive
groups like the Akaroa Tennis
Club which disbanded as the
courts became unusable, said
Whitehead.
“At the moment if you’re
playing a game of tennis, you
hit the cracks and the balls
bounce off in all sorts of random
directions.”
Whitehead said the committee
is already making good
fundraising progress, with some
large donations from individuals
and organisations like the Akaroa
Lions Club already secured.
She anticipates the upgrades
might take a few weeks after
construction starts.
Although construction is
planned to start in spring,
city council community parks
manager Al Hardy said the
date depends on whether the
committee secures the necessary
funding for the astroturf.
The committee was formed
more than six years ago to
advocate to and coordinate an
upgrade with the city council.
“I think to get this done, the
council really needed a group
like us to say ‘we want to work in
partnership with you’.”
Policing hub
Gary, Tom, Arnie
plan on hold
• From page 1
“We’ve got nearly full
coverage of the hill,” Baird said.
“It’s been good for a couple
of situations where suspicious
people have been wandering
around open garage doors. Then
people can let each other know.”
Baird and Lomax both
emphasised members of the
WhatsApp groups should still
report crime and suspicious
behaviour to police as
the channels are only
for monitoring and
reporting to neighbours.
Future plans for the
WhatsApp groups
involve setting up a
community policing
hub at the old Sumner
police station. But
police opposition to the
proposal has brought it to a halt
for now.
The plan to use the Nayland
St building was first raised in
July by the Bays Community
Policing Hub, which includes
some members of the
WhatsApp groups.
But police told Bay Harbour
News the group had been
Lane Todd
advised it could not use
the building “months ago”.
But when Bay Harbour
News approached the hub, a
spokesperson said it was not
aware of this decision and was
surprised by it.
Metro area commander,
Superintendent Lane Todd, said
the plan was declined because
police want people to report
crime directly to them, rather
than through a hub.
“That way we can gather
as much information
as possible at the time,
providing a better
response.”
The building is
currently occupied by
the Sumner Community
Residents’ Association.
The hub spokesperson
said police misunderstood the
proposed function of the hub
as people would be encouraged
to report crime to the police as
well.
Said Banks Peninsula MP
Vanessa Weenink: “If police
don’t support it, I don’t support
it. It seems unlikely it would go
ahead.”
in there”.
When a trap has caught
something, they have developed
an easy routine, sharing their
jobs.
“It’s really handy with two
because it makes everything a
bit quicker,” said Freedman.
The trio are members of
Whaka-Ora Pest Project, a
community trapping initiative
covering the parks and trails
around the harbour.
“One of us can do the trap,
and the other person can be on
the app, logging the catch on
TrapNZ. By yourself, you have
to take the gloves off, get into
computer mode, and then flip
back to nature,” said Freedman.
Tom, 17, is so fast at logging
the catches, Freedman barely
notices him doing it.
He said without Tom, he
would probably forget to record
AT WORK: Father and son pest trapping team Gary and
Tom Freedman working in Cass Bay with their loyal cocker
spaniel Arnie.
the catches online.
They’ve recorded excellent
results so far.
“It’s really satisfying when you
get something,” Tom said.
“You know you’re doing it
well, and it’s working.”
The Cashmere High student
has a message for young people
in New Zealand.
“I urge everyone, especially
young people, to do something
like this because it feels so good,”
he said.
“The world so often feels a
little hopeless with climate
change and everything that’s
happening in the world. But
these things on a local scale can
make such a difference.”
Understanding Pain in Pets
ow do we know when our pets are in pain? They’re
H still eating their food, they’re running around and
playing with their toys, surely they feel fine? Don’t they?
In the animal kingdom, the primary goal is simple: keep
the species going. Nature, as it turns out, isn’t too fussed
about our happiness or how good our hair (or coat) looks
or whether we have the latest toys. It cares about survival
– eat, stay out of danger and survive long enough to keep
producing offspring to carry on the cycle. Pain plays
a crucial role in survival. It’s the body’s way of saying,
“That’s hot, get away from that fire!” or “Ouch, that’s
sharp, it’ll cut me!” or “Look out! That other animal wants
to eat me. Run!”
As humans, we have the luxury of interpreting pain with
a touch of modern convenience: If we have a sore tooth
we can just call the dentist, if we’ve injured ourselves we
know we can take it easy for a few days. Our furry friends
have a more primal understanding.
For them, pain isn’t just a signal, it’s a survival tool deeply
rooted in their biology. They’re not going to come and
tell us “Hey, I’m hurting”, they’re wired to tough it out
and keep going, no matter what, so they are masters at
disguising signs of injury or illness.
Pain can manifest in different ways. Acute pain comes on
suddenly and can look more obvious or severe. It acts as
a protective reflex at first but can become harmful if left
untreated. Chronic pain tends to be more insidious in
onset and the signs can be much more subtle, it has little
protective value and can become quite debilitating having
significant impacts on overall quality of life.
So, how do we tell if our furry companions are in pain? It’s
all about paying attention to the signs. It can really help to
think about how your pet behaves normally (or if they’re
older, how they used to behave when they were young),
how they move, what activities they like, how they play,
do they look for attention? Knowing what is normal for
them can help you detect early changes more quickly. Our
pets won’t always show their discomfort in obvious ways,
so it’s essential to be vigilant and proactive in seeking
veterinary care when needed.
At Kowhai Veterinary Clinic, we’re committed to helping
our furry friends live their best lives. From chronic pain
management to proactive preventive care, we’re here to
support you every step of the way. Because when it comes
to our pets’ well-being, there’s no goal more important
than ensuring their comfort and happiness.
Remember, old age is not a disease. While our pets may
slow down a bit as they age, it’sessential to address any
signs of discomfort or pain promptly. With the right care
and attention, we can help our furry companions exceed
nature’s survival goals and live a life filled with comfort
and joy.
So, here’s to keeping our pets happy, healthy, and
pain-free – because when they thrive, we thrive too.
Signs of Pain in Animals
• loss of appetite or difficulty eating
• decreased activity
• restlessness
• decreased engagement with human and animal friends
• panting
• salivation
• posture changes – may be rigid, hunched, or drooping
• wide eyes
• limping/change in gait
• change in behavior – aggression/irritability
• whining/moaning/ other vocalization
• Inappropriate toileting - soiling in house
• squinting, blinking, tears, eye redness or discharge
Common Causes of Pain
• Musculoskeletal – bones, joints, muscles, tendons
– fractures, strains, bruises, arthritis, etc.
• Visceral – coming from internal organs such as
stomach, intestines, urinary tract, even eyes
– think UTI, stomach ulcers, pneumonia, cancer, etc.
• Neurologic – neurologic pain can come from
damaged nerves, neuropathies, and some autoimmune
diseases
• Dental/oral – oral pain can come from fractured
damaged teeth, gum disease, oral ulcers, or oral
foreign bodies
• Dermal – the skin is the body’s first alert system and
it’s full of pain receptors – scrapes, burns, cuts, and
rashes can all cause pain
team up to take down pests
Joining the pest project was a
no-brainer for Freedman too.
The 50-year-old works in sustainability
and has even brought
in and piloted New Zealand’s first
fully electric airplane.
Over the past five years, the
Freedman family has helped replant
Steadfast Reserve above Cass
Bay with native trees.
Alongside the Cass Bay Reserves
Committee, they have contributed
to transforming the grassy valley
into an area filled with natives.
“All of these trees you see here
are the riparian planting we’ve
planted over the last two or three
years. We’re so proud of how this
has come up it’s phenomenal,” said
Freedman.
To protect the plants and encourage
native species to come back, he
knew the community would need
to start trapping in the reserve.
So when he ran into pest project
co-ordinator Katie Dunlop while
walking Arnie, it didn’t take a lot
of persuasion to sign up as a local
trapper.
Tom was immediately keen to
help.
“I’ve been involved with the sustainability
council at school for a
while, and we do a bit of trapping,”
Tom said.
“But it’s awesome to do it in your
own backyard.”
He loves seeing all the birds
return to the valley.
“It does feel like there are more
birds here since the planting, and
we need to protect them.”
The pest project works in city
council parks and reserves to support
the work already being done
by Predator Free Port Hills.
The group is also tackling
invasive plant species around the
harbour to ensure native plants
and animals can thrive.
The community trapping project
took months of careful planning
and research.
Said Dunlop: “We started monitoring
for pests in January 2023
and collated that data to identify
where the hotspots are.”
In October, she ran a series of information
evenings for locals who
signed up to become community
trappers.
CATCH: Gary
Freedman and
Arnie check a
pest trap.
TRACK: Tom
and Gary
Freedman
also help plant
native trees
with the Cass
Bay Reserves
Committee.
Freedman and Tom were impressed
by the resources provided
by the pest project for the volunteers.
“Tom and I went along to the
training, and we learned how the
different traps worked and some of
the reasons we’re trapping. It was
really useful,” said Freedman.
Each member receives a backpack,
a handbook detailing safe
trapping techniques, a high-vis
vest, a hip pack, and all the tools
needed to clean, service and
change out baits in the various
traps.
Said Dunlop: “WOPP has been
able to learn from all the years of
experience that other predator
control groups have built up
throughout the country.
“We don’t have to reinvent the
wheel.”
92yo Ailsa’s motto: ‘Use it or lose it’
• By Sasha Watson
EXTENSIVE TRAINING was
a key factor in Ailsa Newton’s
walk of 8480 steps in the Les Mills
City2Surf fun run.
Not bad for a 92-year-old.
Ailsa completed the 6.5km
distance from Porritt Park to
Rawhiti Domain in one hour and
43 minutes.
“The event was very good and
very well organised. It was a relief
to finish and I was very glad to sit
down.
“I am quite proud of myself for
having done it. As people say, use
it or lose it. I must say thank you
to all who supported me.”
Ailsa, a resident at the Archer
Retirement Village and Rest
Home in Beckenham, said having
its staff organise the walk helped
push her to complete it.
She was joined by her son Brian
McCracken and fellow residents,
the home’s general manager Jane
Haughey and site manager Philip
Hanson.
The ex-Brookhaven resident had
persevered with extensive training
for six weeks by walking daily.
On the event day, she surpassed
her 6km milestone which she had
achieved the week before.
“I’m still asking myself why I
did it. I will never do it again.
“But, I am looking at taking
on a 5km Pink Ribbon walk in
CELEBRATED: Archer
Village’s acting activities
provider, Bridie O’Flaherty,
helped Ailsa Newton
prepare for the walk and
presented her with flowers
and a pair of socks.
October. I’m resting for now, so
we will see . . . I’ll be a bit older by
then,” she said.
Having been a keen walker
for many years, Ailsa was once a
part of the WEA Trampers and
the Cashmere Athletic walking
group.
“I started walking when I was
one year old . . . but I joined my
groups a long time ago so I’ve
been actively walking for about 75
years.”
She continues to walk 1.5km
four days a week and takes part
in the rest home’s activities
programme.
A gathering took place at the
home on Tuesday to celebrate the
achievement of the three walkers
and the village team.
Plan to make sailing accessible for disabled people
HOPEFUL: Five wheelchair users were the first to enjoy
SailAbility’s services during a fundraiser held at the Naval
Point Club.
STEADY PACE: Ailsa Newton managed to cover 8480 steps in the Les Mills City2Surf fun
run. She was supported by her son Brian McCracken, as well as fellow residents and staff
from Archer Retirement Village and Rest Home.
• By Dylan Smits
A NEW charity helping disabled
people to sail is hoping to be
fully operational by spring.
The SailAbility Canterbury
Charitable Trust held a sailing
fundraiser, which served as a
test drive for their proposed
service in Lyttelton.
“We want to support as
many people as possible to get
into sailing,” said trustee Ben
Acland.
“We know currently there
is no way to get people with
physical disabilities, like
paraplegics, into the boats.”
In the future, the trust wants
to work with the city council to
make wharfs in Lyttelton more
wheelchair accessible.
The future sailing programme
would involve volunteers of
varying experience who would
assist and teach interested
disabled people to sail small
boats.
Acland anticipated the
trust will cater for different
programmes to people’s varying
disabilities. It will be run out of
the Naval Point Club.
Volunteers hosted five
wheelchair users in an assisted
sailing event and held a raffle
to raise funds for the start of the
programme.
SailAbility Wellington has
loaned the trust two Hansa
303 single or two-crew
sailing keelboats to help get
the programme started in
Lyttelton. The trust is looking
to purchase its own vessels after
enough fundraising.
Acland looks to Wellington’s
SailAbility as the model to
replicate as it has nearly 400
users of the service a week.
“I hope we’ll have a range of
people from kids
just having their first sail to
people who might actually
take up the sport of sailing
and enter regattas that we
organise.”

Community pitches in to revitalise track
• By Dylan Smits
A NEGLECTED track in
Cass Bay has been given
much needed attention by a
group of scouts, boaties, and
conservationists.
“We’re very conscious of
making sure the children are
very aware of keeping their
own harbour clean and tidy,”
said Lyttelton Sea Scouts leader
Ruth Targus.
About 65 people from the
sea scouts, their parents, the
Pigeon Bay Boat Club and the
Cass Bay Reserves Committee
pitched in for the working bee
at Pony Point Reserve.
“There’s always been a track
but it’s not been very clearly
marked. It’s always been a bit
ropey so it’s nice to be working
on it,” said Targus.
Rubbish and weeds were
collected while the track was
cleared and refined.
“We got several bags of
rubbish which I thought was a
job well done.”
Targus said the group
weeded and watered plants
around the 51 memorial trees
planted for the mosque attacks.
“Everyone ended up really
pleased with how it went.
The Phoenix Crown
by Kate Quinn and Janie Chang
An unforgettable story about the intertwined lives of two wronged women,
spanning from the chaos of the San Francisco earthquake to the glittering
palaces of Versailles…
San Francisco, 1906. In a city bustling with newly minted
millionaires and scheming upstarts, two very different women
hope to change their fortunes: Gemma, a golden-haired,
silver-voiced soprano whose career desperately needs
rekindling, and Suling, a petite and resolute Chinatown
embroideress who is determined to escape an arranged
marriage.
Their paths cross when they are drawn into the orbit of Henry
Thornton, a charming railroad magnate whose extraordinary collection of
Chinese antiques includes the fabled Phoenix Crown, a legendary relic of
Beijing’s fallen Summer Palace.
His patronage offers Gemma and Suling the chance of a lifetime, but their lives
are thrown into turmoil when a devastating earthquake rips San Francisco
apart and Thornton disappears, leaving behind a mystery reaching further than
anyone could have imagined . . .
Until the Phoenix Crown reappears five years later at a sumptuous Paris costume
ball, drawing Gemma and Suling together in one last desperate quest
for justice . . .
Two decades ago, his first wife and son vanished - the case never solved.
Is the master of mystery playing a deadly game - and if so, who will be the loser?
And when a body surfaces in the family’s koi pond, they all realize the past isn’t
Foundation marks 30 years with $30,000 in grants
THE SUMNER Ferrymead
Foundation is celebrating 30 years
serving the local community,
and to mark the occasion they
are offering grants to groups,
clubs, and organisations within
the foundation’s catchment area –
from Taylors Mistake through to
Mt Pleasant, around to Heathcote
and across to Brookhaven.
There are four grants valued at
$5000 each and one at $10,000.
“When the Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation was first formed,
it waited for individuals and
organisations request assistance,”
said foundation chair Martin
Hawes.
“Today we are taking a more
proactive approach, offering
individual scholarships and
awards like the primary school
Puawai Awards, the academic and
outward bound scholarships, or
the apprentice and environment
awards. And this year we are
offering the five community
grants to celebrate our 30-year
milestone.”
Applications are sought from
a wide range of clubs, groups
and organisations. They might
be looking for a grant to improve
sporting facilities or the health
and physical wellbeing of the
community, to help arts and
culture to flourish, to encourage
and support learning and
development at all ages, or to
encourage a cleaner greener
environment in our community.
Applicants should go to the
foundation’s website –sumnerferrymeadfoundation.co.nz
– to
download an application form and
submit it before April 22nd 2024.
The recipients of the grants will
be recognised at a community
event in July.
“It will be a great opportunity
to acknowledge those that are
making a significant contribution
to our community,” said Hawes.
“The recipients of the
scholarships and awards
programme will also be recognised
at the same event.
“We are fortunate we have
sponsors for the scholarships and
awards programme so we can offer
it every year.
“Ideally we would love to find
sponsors for the community
grants programme so we can offer
that every year too.”
Record number of athletes
take on Sea2Sky Challenge
AFTER A DIP in entry
numbers last year following
the Covid pandemic, the Brad
Richards Building Sea2Sky
Challenge at Scarborough roared
back to life with a record number
of entries at the sold out event.
Children as young as five
through to Sumner’s Deb
Rhode who is aged over 70 took
part in a variety of events on
March 17.
Race options included a kids
swim run, a 16km trail run
and the blue ribbon triathlon
and duathlon event that takes
athletes from Scarborough to
the top of Mt Pleasant and out
to Godley Head by bike before
running back to the Clocktower
via Taylors Mistake.
“We’ve never had a sell out
at this event before, everyone
is so stoked to have a full field
on what is such a beautiful and
challenging course,” said event
director and Redcliffs-raised
John Newsom.
“We try hard to have event
options for everyone not just the
uber-fit athletes.
“This year we saw significantly
more teams where each athlete
does one discipline of the race”.
Lidia Belles-Escrig, a Sumner
resident and one of the event
sponsors from Physiosouth, said:
“It was a great hard honest race. I
just wish I had the legs for it.”
Title sponsor Brad Richards,
of Brad Richard Building in
Redcliffs, said it has “been
involved with this event for
several years now”.
“We love to see so many locals
taking on this end of summer
challenge in such a beautiful
place. I did the 16km trail run
again this year and it doesn’t get
any easier”.
Said Rhode: “I have done this
race as an individual several
times but as my body was not
cooperating this year I entered as
a part of a team.
“Our team were all over
70 so we knew we wouldn’t be
winning anything in the open
division, but it was great fun
to be able to be part of such a
brilliant event, its a challenging
course and the location is
unsurpassed.
“Hopefully next year I can be
back to do the full course as an
individual.”
The winner of the men’s full
triathlon Laurie Watson finished
in a blistering time of 1hr 21min.
He and silver medalist Tom
Somerville battled it out on the
hilly run course.
Watson said: “I really struggled
on the first half of the run and
Tom caught me on Taylors
Mistake beach but I sprinted into
the start of the twisty stuff and
managed to extend the gap and
bring it home.”
Winner of the women’s
triathlon Kiri Atkin said: “It
was tough out there. I’ve done
this four times and it doesn’t get
easier but it’s really fun.”
Veteran Anthony Chapman
took line honours in the
duathlon with Courtney Hawke
winning the women’s race.
A change this year was the
modification of the trail run
event. The run is now almost
completely on trails, including
the stunning Crater Rim track
with views over Lyttelton
Harbour where the SailGP took
place.
Michael McGleenan took the
win by two and a half minutes,
while Kirsten Hall won the
women’s run by nearly five
minutes.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST 19
A Breton aboard visiting French barque
CLAUDE MARIE Guillo, born
on January 19, 1878 in the
Morbihan region of Brittany,
France, embarked on a life at
sea as a young man, eventually
joining the crew of the French
Barque Boieldieu.
In May 1904, the Boieldieu
berthed at Sydney, Australia
for what was to be Claude’s last
voyage, at the age of 26, and the
first for Captain Jules Boussion,
as the ship’s new commander.
This vessel, a three-masted
steel barque constructed in
Nantes in 1902, weighed in at
2353 tonnes gross, was 69.3m
long, with a beam of 12.3m, and
a draught of 6.9m. The winch
house included a steam ‘donkey
engine’ for lifting anchor, a
common feature of the era’s
sailing ships. The forecastle
housed more than 72 fowls
and several pigs, apparently
destined for the galley. A pet
goat, monkey, small dog, and a
ship’s cat, were also aboard for
the crew’s amusement.
Departing Sydney on June 3,
1904, laden with 27,313 sacks
of wheat bound for Falmouth
in the United Kingdom, the
Boieldieu initially enjoyed fine
weather before encountering a
series of severe southern gales
that slowed her progress.
Then, on June 27, just off Tini
Heke Snares Islands, 100km
southwest of Rakiura Stewart
Island, the Boieldieu sailed
into “mountainous seas” that
smashed the shaft of her rudder
up through the deck.
Thus began her perilous drift,
taking the Boieldieu south of
Motu Ihupuku Campbell Island,
more than 600km from Rakiura,
by July 10.
Efforts to repair the damaged
rudder proved futile, with six
seamen nearly drowning when
hoisted over the stern into the
freezing waters.
Three attempts to fashion a
temporary rudder failed, with
heavy seas taking the first two
away, and the third proving
too cumbersome for effective
navigation.
By July 21, the barque drifted
as far as latitude 57° south,
almost halfway to Antarctica,
before southerly winds pushed
her back towards New Zealand.
By August 1, the Boieldieu
was west of the Bounty Islands,
approximately 600km southeast
of Lyttelton.
After 45 days adrift, rescue
came on August 10 when the SS
Toroa out of Chatham Islands,
followed by the SS Kittana, a
collier of the Union Steam Ship
Company (USSC), sighted the
The French barque Boieldieu at sea c. 1902-21 and right, in dry dock for repairs at Lyttelton Port 1904.
PHOTOS: Te Ūaka Lyttelton Museum ref. 14985.7/ 14985.6
vessel just 50km east of Godley
Heads.
Despite the loss of three
towing lines in heavy seas,
Kittana successfully towed
the barque into Whakaraupō
Lyttelton Harbour on the
morning of August 11.
The local community warmly
welcomed Boussion and his
crew, with the captain lauded
for his efforts to maintain
morale through the ordeal with
the distribution of musical
instruments, plenty of good
food, as well as rum coffee at
breakfast and wine with dinner.
A British crew member,
when asked his opinion of the
Frenchman, cheerily stated:
“Tip top! If every British skipper
treated his men as he treats us
there would be more British
seamen in British ships.”
Subsequently, the Boieldieu
Claude Marie Guillo aka
William Thomas Thomson
was dry docked for repairs
on August 25, with the event
attracting significant public
interest.
Crowds arrived from
Christchurch to view the barque
and the large makeshift rudder
that had been constructed
in the desperate attempt to
steer her. The USSC was
to be compensated £1250
(NZ$400,000) for the salvage
operation.
In a gesture of gratitude,
the crew presented a set of
vestments and an oil painting
of the barque to St Joseph’s
Catholic Church in Lyttelton.
An inscription on the painting
read “Reconnaissance à Marie.
Le 10 Août, 1904,” or in English,
“An offering to the Virgin Mary,
August 10th, 1904”.
The Boieldieu was in and out
of dry dock twice from August
into October, with work on the
new rudder and the reloading
of the wheat cargo finally
completed in late October.
However, departure was
delayed when the USSC
requested the Marshal of the
Admiralty Court seize the
Boieldieu, pending payment
of the last £600 (NZ$192,000)
for the salvage. The towing
fee was finally settled at the
end of October, at the same
time Boussion received a cable
message relaying the birth of his
son in France.
The Boieldieu’s main and
mizzen masts were decorated
with bunting in honour of the
event, and the ship was ready to
sail with her full cargo of wheat
on board, when a hull leak was
found.
The ship’s cargo had to then be
unloaded yet again for further
repairs to be made through
November into December.
At this point, a number of
her crew were paid off, while
others had simply jumped ship,
with positions advertised for
replacements.
Finally, at about 4am on
December 28, 1904, the tug
Lyttelton towed Boieldieu from
her anchorage off Te Pohue
Camp Bay through the Heads
to resume her journey, with the
French barque safely discharging
her cargo at Falmouth some 10
months after leaving Sydney.
The following year she caught
fire at Oakland, California, badly
damaging her poop, and was
twice stranded in the Gulf of
Mexico in 1919. Laid up in 1921,
she was broken up at Lorient in
Morbihan, France in 1927.
One of those Boieldieu sailors
who decided to stay on in
Lyttelton Port was the young
Breton, Claude Guillo, although
it would appear perhaps not
with the relevant authorities’
consent.
Working various jobs through
Canterbury and Timaru
districts, Guillo, also known
as William Thomas Thomson
married Helen Ann Fraser in
1914. The happy couple settled
in Methven and had 10 children.
• Many thanks to Jasmine
Thomson for sharing her great
great grandfather’s seafaring
adventures.
