The city council has budgeted $170,000 to re-asphalt the three courts, put up new fencing and carry out any necessary groundwork for the area’s only three public tennis courts. The Banks Peninsula Sports and Recreation committee wants to raise an additional $100,000 to astroturf one of the courts and transform it into a multi-sport surface. “This complex will again become a real asset to our community and allow people to play a variety of sports and do a variety of activities here in Akaroa,” said committee member Jan Whitehead. The courts are currently in poor condition with an uneven surface, she said. “All of them have got crack or sunken or they’re just not safe to use really.” Whitehead said there have already been expressions of interest in using the astroturf ACCOMPLISHED: Mark Smith, chair of the Banks Peninsula Sports and Recreation committee at the Akaroa tennis courts. The upgrades will help revive groups like the Akaroa Tennis Club which disbanded as the courts became unusable, said Whitehead. “At the moment if you’re playing a game of tennis, you hit the cracks and the balls bounce off in all sorts of random directions.” Whitehead said the committee is already making good fundraising progress, with some large donations from individuals and organisations like the Akaroa Lions Club already secured. She anticipates the upgrades might take a few weeks after construction starts. Although construction is planned to start in spring, city council community parks manager Al Hardy said the date depends on whether the committee secures the necessary funding for the astroturf. The committee was formed more than six years ago to advocate to and coordinate an upgrade with the city council. “I think to get this done, the council really needed a group like us to say ‘we want to work in partnership with you’.” NEWS 5 Top two finishes for surf lifesavers SUMNER SURF Lifesaving club’s under-23 women’s team finished second in two finals at the New Zealand IRB championships over the weekend. The team made up of Jade Couch, Harakeke Mote and Brooklyn Baillie was runner-up in both the single and assembly rescue events at Waikouaiti Beach, Otago. The Taylors Mistake women’s under-23 team of Oliva Courtney and Rory Gordon finished fourth in the assembly rescue final, sixth in the mass rescue final and fifth in the tube rescue semi-final. The clubs competed in challenges ranging from equipment preparation to inflatable boat rescues. Sumner finished the competition in eighth overall on 29 points, while Taylors Mistake was 19th. Twenty-two clubs competed at the championships, which was won by the Sunset Beach, Port Waikato, with 161 points. Restoring habitats What’s the cost?
