Community turns to chat
app to report rising crime
• By Dylan Smits
WHATSAPP groups are
being used to monitor crime
and bring neighbourhoods
together to promote
community safety.
Over the past year residents
have set up the app text chats
in communities between
Ferrymead and Scarborough
to address what some see as
a lack of police presence in a
time of rising crime.
“Neighbourhoods have
changed over the years,”
said Sumner Village group
organiser Susie Lomax.
“You used to know everyone
on your street.
“Now the best way to
connect together and keep
each other safe is these
WhatsApp groups.
“It’s really vital.”
The Sumner Village group
has about 50 members and
Lomax is appealing to people
living in other areas to create
more.
WhatsApp groups in
Scarborough and Richmond
Hill had also attracted
a significant number of
members. The groups function
as private channels where
residents are encouraged to
report criminal or suspicious
activities to their neighbours
using text or footage from
their home security cameras.
Police statistics show there
has been a spike in crime in
Sumner over the past two
years. From January 30, 2022,
to January 30 this year, 371
victimisation crimes were
reported in the suburb, an
increase from 273 between
January 30, 2020, and January
30, 2022. Victimisation crimes
are incidents in which a victim
is involved, such as burglary,
theft, robbery, assault, sexual
assault or murder.
A police spokesperson
responded to claims they had
a lack of presence in Sumner
and the surrounding areas,
saying all instances of crime
should be reported “to help
inform our deployment
patterns’’.
The Richmond Hill
WhatsApp group has about
80 members, said organiser
Graeme Baird.
Understanding Pain in Pets
ow do we know when our pets are in pain? They’re
H still eating their food, they’re running around and
playing with their toys, surely they feel fine? Don’t they?
In the animal kingdom, the primary goal is simple: keep
the species going. Nature, as it turns out, isn’t too fussed
about our happiness or how good our hair (or coat) looks
or whether we have the latest toys. It cares about survival
– eat, stay out of danger and survive long enough to keep
producing offspring to carry on the cycle. Pain plays
a crucial role in survival. It’s the body’s way of saying,
“That’s hot, get away from that fire!” or “Ouch, that’s
sharp, it’ll cut me!” or “Look out! That other animal wants
to eat me. Run!”
As humans, we have the luxury of interpreting pain with
a touch of modern convenience: If we have a sore tooth
we can just call the dentist, if we’ve injured ourselves we
know we can take it easy for a few days. Our furry friends
have a more primal understanding.
For them, pain isn’t just a signal, it’s a survival tool deeply
rooted in their biology. They’re not going to come and
tell us “Hey, I’m hurting”, they’re wired to tough it out
and keep going, no matter what, so they are masters at
disguising signs of injury or illness.
Pain can manifest in different ways. Acute pain comes on
suddenly and can look more obvious or severe. It acts as
a protective reflex at first but can become harmful if left
untreated. Chronic pain tends to be more insidious in
onset and the signs can be much more subtle, it has little
protective value and can become quite debilitating having
significant impacts on overall quality of life.
So, how do we tell if our furry companions are in pain? It’s
all about paying attention to the signs. It can really help to
think about how your pet behaves normally (or if they’re
older, how they used to behave when they were young),
how they move, what activities they like, how they play,
do they look for attention? Knowing what is normal for
them can help you detect early changes more quickly. Our
pets won’t always show their discomfort in obvious ways,
so it’s essential to be vigilant and proactive in seeking
veterinary care when needed.
At Kowhai Veterinary Clinic, we’re committed to helping
our furry friends live their best lives. From chronic pain
management to proactive preventive care, we’re here to
support you every step of the way. Because when it comes
to our pets’ well-being, there’s no goal more important
than ensuring their comfort and happiness.
Remember, old age is not a disease. While our pets may
slow down a bit as they age, it’sessential to address any
signs of discomfort or pain promptly. With the right care
and attention, we can help our furry companions exceed
nature’s survival goals and live a life filled with comfort
and joy.
So, here’s to keeping our pets happy, healthy, and
pain-free – because when they thrive, we thrive too.
Signs of Pain in Animals
• loss of appetite or difficulty eating
• decreased activity
• restlessness
• decreased engagement with human and animal friends
• panting
• salivation
• posture changes – may be rigid, hunched, or drooping
• wide eyes
• limping/change in gait
• change in behavior – aggression/irritability
• whining/moaning/ other vocalization
• Inappropriate toileting - soiling in house
• squinting, blinking, tears, eye redness or discharge
Common Causes of Pain
• Musculoskeletal – bones, joints, muscles, tendons
– fractures, strains, bruises, arthritis, etc.
• Visceral – coming from internal organs such as
stomach, intestines, urinary tract, even eyes
– think UTI, stomach ulcers, pneumonia, cancer, etc.
• Neurologic – neurologic pain can come from
damaged nerves, neuropathies, and some autoimmune
diseases
• Dental/oral – oral pain can come from fractured
damaged teeth, gum disease, oral ulcers, or oral
foreign bodies
• Dermal – the skin is the body’s first alert system and
it’s full of pain receptors – scrapes, burns, cuts, and
rashes can all cause pain
92yo Ailsa’s motto: ‘Use it or lose it’
• By Sasha Watson
EXTENSIVE TRAINING was
a key factor in Ailsa Newton’s
walk of 8480 steps in the Les
Mills City2Surf fun run.
Not bad for a 92-year-old.
Ailsa completed the 6.5km
distance from Porritt Park to
Rawhiti Domain in one hour
and 43 minutes.
“The event was very good
and very well organised. It was
a relief to finish and I was very
glad to sit down.
“I am quite proud of myself
for having done it. As people say,
use it or lose it. I must say thank
you to all who supported me.”
Ailsa, a resident at the Archer
Retirement Village and Rest
Home in Beckenham, said
having its staff organise the walk
helped push her to complete it.
She was joined by her son
Brian McCracken and fellow
residents, the home’s general
manager Jane Haughey and site
manager Philip Hanson.
The ex-Brookhaven resident
had persevered with extensive
training for six weeks by
walking daily.
On the event day, she
surpassed her 6km milestone
which she had achieved the week
before.
“I’m still asking myself why I
did it. I will never do it again.
“But, I am looking at taking
on a 5km Pink Ribbon walk in
CELEBRATED: Archer
Village’s acting activities
provider, Bridie O’Flaherty,
helped Ailsa Newton
prepare for the walk and
presented her with flowers
and a pair of socks.
October. I’m resting for now, so
we will see . . . I’ll be a bit older
by then,” she said.
Having been a keen walker
for many years, Ailsa was once a
part of the WEA Trampers and
the Cashmere Athletic walking
group.
“I started walking when I was
one year old . . . but I joined my
groups a long time ago so I’ve
been actively walking for about
75 years.”
She continues to walk 1.5km
four days a week and takes part
in the rest home’s activities
programme.
A gathering took place at the
home on Tuesday to celebrate
the achievement of the three
walkers and the village team.
STEADY PACE: Ailsa Newton managed to cover 8480 steps in the Les Mills City2Surf fun
run. She was supported by her son Brian McCracken, as well as fellow residents and staff
from Archer Retirement Village and Rest Home.
Policing hub
Gary, Tom, Arnie
plan on hold
• From page 1
“We’ve got nearly full
coverage of the hill,” he said.
“It’s been good for a couple
of situations where suspicious
people have been wandering
around open garage doors. Then
people can let each other know.”
Baird and Lomax both
emphasised members of the
WhatsApp groups should
still make reports to police
as the channels are only for
monitoring crime and reporting
to neighbours.
Future plans for the
WhatsApp groups involve
setting up a community
policing hub at the old Sumner
police station. But police
opposition to the proposal has
brought it to a halt for now.
The plan to use the Nayland
St building was first raised in
July by the Bays Community
Policing Hub, which includes
some members of the
WhatsApp groups.
But police told Bay Harbour
News the group had been
advised it could not use
the building “months ago”.
But when Bay Harbour
News approached the hub, a
spokesperson said it was not
aware of this decision and was
surprised by it.
Metro area commander,
Superintendent Lane Todd, said
the plan was declined because
police want people to report
crime directly to them, rather
than through a hub.
“That way we can gather as
much information as possible
at the time,
providing
a better
response.”
The
building is
currently
occupied by
the Sumner
Community
Residents’
Association. Lane Todd
The hub
spokesperson said police
misunderstood the proposed
function of the hub as people
would be encouraged to report
crime to the police as well as to
the hub.
Said Banks Peninsula MP
Vanessa Weenink: “If police
don’t support it, I don’t support
it. It seems unlikely it would go
ahead.”
THE STORY of family, nature,
and the bond between a father,
son, and their furry companion
is unfolding around Lyttelton
Harbour.
Gary Freedman and his
son Tom, who is a student at
Cashmere High School, make
a great trapping team with help
from their cocker spaniel Arnie.
Freedman said when Arnie
races off to check the traps “he
lets us know if there’s something
in there.”
When a trap has caught
something, the father and son
team have developed an easy
routine, sharing their jobs.
“It’s really handy with two
because it makes everything a
bit quicker,” said Freedman.
The trio are members of
Whaka-Ora Pest Project, a
community trapping initiative
covering the parks and trails
around Lyttelton Harbour.
“One of us can do the trap,
and the other person can be on
the app, logging the catch on
TrapNZ. By yourself, you have
to take the gloves off, get into
computer mode, and then flip
back to nature,” said Freedman.
Tom, 17, is so fast at logging
the catches, Freedman barely
notices him doing it.
He said without Tom, he
would probably forget to record
the catches online.
ON THE JOB: Father and son pest trapping team Gary
and Tom Freedman working with their loyal cocker
spaniel Arnie.
They’ve recorded excellent
results so far.
Said Tom: “It’s really satisfying
when you get something.
“You know you’re doing it
well, and it’s working.”
He has a message for young
people in New Zealand.
“I urge everyone, especially
young people, to do something
like this because it feels so good,”
he said.
“The world so often feels a
little hopeless with climate
change and everything that’s
happening in the world. But
these things on a local scale can
make such a difference.”
team up to take down pests
Joining the pest project was a nobrainer
for Freedman too.
The 50-year-old works in
sustainability and has even brought
in and piloted New Zealand’s first
fully electric airplane.
Over the past five years, the
Freedman family has helped replant
Steadfast Reserve above Cass
Bay with native trees.
Alongside the Cass Bay Reserves
Committee, they have contributed
to transforming the grassy valley
into an area filled with natives.
“All of these trees you see here
are the riparian planting we’ve
planted over the last two or three
years. We’re so proud of how this
has come up it’s phenomenal,” said
Freedman.
To protect the plants and encourage
native species to come back, he
knew the community would need
to start trapping in the reserve.
So when he ran into pest project
co-ordinator Katie Dunlop while
walking Arnie, it didn’t take a lot
of persuasion to sign up as a local
trapper.
Tom was immediately keen to
help.
“I’ve been involved with the sustainability
council at school for a
while, and we do a bit of trapping,”
Tom said.
“But it’s awesome to do it in your
own backyard.”
He loves seeing all the birds
return to the valley.
“It does feel like there are more
birds here since the planting, and
we need to protect them.”
The pest project works in city
council parks and reserves to support
the work already being done
by Predator Free Port Hills.
The group is also tackling
invasive plant species around the
harbour to ensure native plants
and animals can thrive.
The community trapping project
took months of careful planning
and research.
Said Dunlop: “We started monitoring
for pests in January 2023
and collated that data to identify
where the hotspots are.”
In October, she ran a series of information
evenings for locals who
signed up to become community
trappers.
Freedman and Tom were impressed
by the resources provided
by the pest project for the volunteers.
“Tom and I went along to the
training, and we learned how the
different traps worked and some of
the reasons we’re trapping. It was
really useful,” said Freedman.
Each member receives a backpack,
a handbook detailing safe
trapping techniques, a high-vis
vest, a hip pack, and all the tools
needed to clean, service and
change out baits in the various
traps.
Said Dunlop: “WOPP has been
able to learn from all the years of
experience that other predator
control groups have built up
throughout the country.
“We don’t have to reinvent the
wheel.”
alongside his older brother was a
highlight.
Amazing said he “wants to
play rugby like his dad”.
“He used to play rugby all the
time.”
The event allows families to
connect with other parents and
caregivers while watching their
children participate.
A successful one-off pilot
programme last year attracted
more than 250 children, but
feedback suggested it be held
over several weeks instead.
Said Linwood rugby
development officer Sam Jack:
“We saw there was a real need
to run something over a period
of weeks, and something that
was accessible for families in
one place, at the same time, to
remove barriers.”
Jack said the club recognised
attempts to increase
participation in traditional
Saturday morning games
was not working as the cost of
travel, subs and equipment were
barriers to some families.
Linwood instead decided to
offer Games of Ranginui in
partnership with Canterbury
Rugby and Tamai Sports to
ensure more children have access
to the benefits of sport.
SIBLING SKILL: Whitau School brothers Revival, left, and Amazing play rippa rugby.
In its first week, the festival
attracted almost 70 players who
had not registered with Linwood
before. The club hopes
to deliver a similar programme
in term two, with anyone
interested in signing up
Cheers to the bottomless brunch
EASTER IS THE perfect time
for brunch. With a long weekend
and nowhere to go, what better
way to pass the time than with a
slow leisurely start to the day with
friends and family.
For those with a sweet tooth,
how about a super-easy pancake
recipe, packed with seeds, that
you can serve straight from the
pan with a side of berries and
cocoa sauce.
Then, to add a celebratory
touch, serve with a bloody Mary,
the ultimate brunch drink.
Seeded baked pancake
with berries and cocoa
sauce
Serves 4
Pancake batter
50g (generous 1/3 cup) plain, allpurpose
flour
3 Tbsp coconut flour
1 tsp baking powder
Pinch of salt
150ml (2/3 cup) milk
3 eggs, beaten
4 Tbsp runny honey
1 tsp vanilla extract
5 Tbsp mixed seeds, such as
linseeds/flaxseeds, chia seeds,
sunflower seeds, poppy seeds
2 Tbsp coconut oil
Cocoa sauce
4 Tbsp raw cocoa powder
2½ Tbsp runny honey
2½ Tbsp coconut oil, melted
To serve
150g (¾ cup) Greek yoghurt
50g dried berries, such as goji,
acai, cranberries etc
100g mixed fresh berries such
as blueberries, raspberries, red
currants etc
Icing/confectioners sugar, to dust
23cm ovenproof frying pan/
skillet
Method:
• Preheat the oven to 200°C.
• To make the pancakes, sift the
plain/all-purpose flour, coconut
flour, baking powder and salt
into a mixing bowl. Combine the
milk, eggs, honey and vanilla in
a separate bowl and beat into the
flours to make a smooth batter.
Fold in the mixed seeds.
• Heat the coconut oil in
the ovenproof frying pan/
skillet until melted. Pour in the
pancake batter and transfer to
the preheated oven. Bake in the
preheated oven for 15 minutes
until the pancake is puffed up and
golden.
• Meanwhile, make the cocoa
sauce. Place all the ingredients
in a saucepan with 4 tablespoons
water and heat gently, stirring,
until smooth. Keep warm.
• As soon as the pancake is
cooked, remove it from the oven.
Spoon the yoghurt into the centre
and top with the dried and fresh
berries. Drizzle over the cocoa
sauce and serve at once, dusted
with a little icing/confectioners’
sugar.
Best ever Bloody Mary
Serves 4
400g cherry vine tomatoes
olive oil, for drizzling
500ml tomato juice
2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 Tbsp sriracha chilli sauce
3cm piece of fresh horseradish,
peeled and finely grated
60ml freshly squeezed
lime juice
300ml vodka
sea salt and freshly ground black
pepper
To garnish
Celery stalks
Chilli flakes
Method:
• Preheat the oven to 180°C.
• Place the tomatoes on a
baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil
and season with salt and pepper.
Roast for 15-20 minutes, or until
the skins begin to split.
• Put the tomato juice and roast
tomatoes in a food processor and
blend until smooth.
• Transfer to a large jug and
stir in the Worcestershire sauce,
sriracha chilli/chilli sauce and
grated horseradish. Season with
salt and pepper, cover with cling
film and chill in the fridge for at
least 30 minutes.
• When ready to serve, add the
lime juice and vodka and stir
well.
• Place a celery stalk in four
highball glasses, half-fill each
glass with ice and pour in the
Bloody Mary mixture. Garnish
each with a pinch of chilli flakes
and enjoy!

Toyota’s peppy hybrid hatch the best Yaris yet
A GOOD EXAMPLE of SUVs
being hot and hatches not is the
Toyota Yaris a funky five-door
hatch, which hardly gets a sales
look-in against its slightly SUV
sibling the Yaris Cross that costs
almost $4k more.
The current Yaris is now
four years old, but considered
the biggest transformation in
decades of the dull, but utterly
dependable Yaris. Some even
described it as a quantum leap in
refinement and technology over
its predecessors.
The starting point for a Yaris is
$32,190 for the GX hybrid with a
big jump to $38,390 for the high
spec ZR hybrid provided for this
road test.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
If you’re serious about
reducing you carbon footprint
by driving some something
clean and green, the distinctive
Yaris hybrid makes a compelling
case with super low CO2 engine
emission figure at just 76g/
km. The 1.5-litre three-cylinder
petrol electric hybrid system
has a combined power output of
85kW. Collectively this combo
does a fine job.
In urban motoring, the hybrid
has amazingly low engine noise
levels. You can almost hear a
pin drop in the cabin when it’s
running in electric-only mode
and it does this for extended
periods on reasonably flat
terrain.
Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 7; Build Quality
7; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 6; Styling 7; Value
for money 6; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7
It switches seamlessly between
its double life of petrol and
electric and back again, a credit
to an advanced and effective
lithium-ion battery and electric
motor set-up.
I noticed the hybrid seemed
to work harder when faced with
energy draining hill climbs, and
isn’t as spritely at it during hill
free driving.
This compact five-door
hatch is happiest in the urban
motoring that it was designed
for. Going beyond the city limits
pushes it and the driver out of
their comfort zones. Longer open
road trips are doable and the test
car proved comfortable enough
on a 200km roadie. A direct, and
it is, shift CVT (continuously
variable transmission) is a
purpose built electronically
controlled gearbox, tuned for
the gear shifting efficiency
needed to deliver on its claimed
3.5L/100km fuel economy.
Quality and fashionable
materials are not what you
typically find in a mini hatch
for the masses such as the
Yaris, nor the climate control
air conditioning, smart entry
with push button start, digital
speedometer and head-up
display. If a roomy cabin and a
decent size rear hatch is on your
list then you won’t find it, instead
it’s a tight 4-seater for those who
don’t travel with a lot of luggage.
Connectivity is well sorted
on all fronts, with a multimedia
system incorporating a
7-inch touchscreen display,
full smartphone integration
including Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto.
Almost every element of
this vehicle is executed with
precision, but then that’s
something Toyota has always
done better than most.
This is the best riding and
handling Yaris yet. Balanced,
nimble, and with deep reserves
of grip on even the poorest
road surfaces, ensure an action
packed drive over twisty terrain.
The steering is engaging with
just the right amount of road feel
and weighting, to quickly gain
the confidence of the driver, and
it is so easy to limbo into and out
of the tightest parking spots.
Think award
winning lifestyle
At Summerset, we’re proud of what we offer, with our modern homes, welcoming
communities, and excellent staff.
Now there are even more great reasons to choose Summerset. We’ve been voted
winner of the Reader’s Digest Quality Service Award, and Aged Advisor People’s
Choice and Nationwide Group awards.
So, if you are contemplating village life, pop along to our Open Day at Summerset
Prebbleton and meet our residents who call the village home. They’ll let you in on
the lifestyle they enjoy in our growing village, and show you the range of brand-new
homes that are available*.
We’d love to share the Summerset lifestyle. We think it’s gold!
Love the life you choose
