Annual Report
Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens
1
Monika Froehler, CEO
Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens
Dear Friends of the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global
Citizens,
The year 2023 was marked by a series of profound
challenges that impacted communities worldwide,
particularly those already vulnerable: women and
youth. Despite these hurdles, the Ban Ki-moon Centre
for Global Citizens (BKMC) remained resolute in
fostering leadership for the Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement. Our
Annual Report 2023 showcases our efforts to advance
peace, stability, and prosperity for all.
Under the leadership of our co-chairs, board, and
partners, we positively impacted the lives of 900,000
people across 76 countries and reached more than
8 million people via international media. Our initiatives
spanned from governmental policymaking on
climate adaptation to transformative education while
offering direct opportunities to young changemakers
to amplify their voices and equip them with SDG
knowledge, 21 st -century skills, and global citizenship
values.
In response to the escalating climate crisis, we worked
with young changemakers and agri-preneurs in
Sub-Saharan Africa on their SDG Micro-Projects and
made their demands for agricultural adaptation
heard at major international meetings, such as the
Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi and COP28 in Dubai.
One notable achievement was the participation of
our Youth Agri-champion, Eliud Rugut, alongside
Bill Gates, in a COP28 panel discussion, underscoring
the importance of representing young smallholder
farmers on a global stage.
To elevate the voices of women smallholder farmers,
we established a high-level council to formulate policy
demands on access to land, resources, and leadership.
In addition, at COP28 we premiered a documentary
about Nijforti Princewill Gana and his organization
SustainAfric in Cameroon, which empowers widowed
women farmers by teaching, encouraging, and
developing their skillset for snail farming.
This year, we also focused on greening education.
With the support of Dubai Cares and the partnership
with Plan International and Unbounded Associates,
we launched a worldwide online course for students
aged 14-20 years to empower them to find a green
job and contribute to non-formal education and
Mission 4.7.
We also made big strides with our “Global Citizen
Scholarship”, “Online Executive Training – Young
Women Leadership on Climate Adaptation”, and
“Learners to Leaders” programs, as we added
60 changemakers to our alumni. They impressed us
with their creativity in taking action for the SDGs and
teaching Global Citizenship Education (GCED) around
the globe by implementing SDG Micro-Projects in
their communities.
Thanks to the support of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs of the Republic of Korea, we organized the First
International Global Citizenship Education Forum, on
the question of how GCED needs to change in the
age of climate emergency and artificial intelligence, at
the Salzburg Global Seminar.
In the latter half of the year, our high-level advocacy
work saw us organize the “SDG Dialogforum 3.0” with
the Austrian government and civil society. As Austria
will be submitting its second Voluntary National
Review to the United Nations (UN) in 2024, we
gathered three Austrian ministers and more than
250 stakeholders to address challenges and successes
in SDG implementation.
Furthermore, we extended our support to our partner
offices in South Korea and the United States. With
the Ban Ki-moon Foundation in the US, we launched
the “Accelerator Fund” to award seed funds to
BKMC alumni who are making waves in the area of
sustainable development.
Now, we invite you to explore the stories of our
incredible changemakers in this report. We hope that
they will inspire you as much as they inspired our
work in the year 2023 and beyond.
Thank you for your support!
Heinz Fischer, Co-chair
Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens
Esteemed friends and supporters of the Ban Ki-moon
Centre for Global Citizens,
As we reflect upon the last year, I am delighted to say
that the Ban Ki-moon Centre has resolutely continued
to work towards its mission and vision with great vigor.
In the face of dramatic global challenges, the
Centre has further solidified its standing within the
international community, steadfastly working towards
its objectives of empowering women and youth to
implement the Sustainable Development Goals and
the Paris Climate Agreement. I express my gratitude
to our dedicated board members, our tireless team,
and the steadfast support of partners and friends
worldwide, without whom our successes would not
be possible.
I am particularly grateful for Co-chair Ban Ki-moon’s
continuous leadership, collaboration, and dedication
to our shared vision. During his last visit to Vienna in
March 2023, we had the opportunity to reflect on past
achievements and exchange ideas on future visions
for the Centre. The same was possible during the time
of our common visit to the United Arab Emirates in
March 2024 to strengthen support with local partner
institutions.
Undoubtedly, the complex international landscape
continues to pose challenges, notably the ongoing
war Russia has launched against Ukraine, the
escalation of devastating consequences that have
unfolded since October 2023 in Israel and The Gaza
Strip, economic uncertainties, persistent threats to
our climate and global well-being, and challenges
to liberal democracy and multilateralism in Europe
and beyond.
Despite these adversities, we remained dedicated
to our core initiatives. From active participation in
the COP28 climate conference in Dubai to hosting
the third SDG Dialogforum in Vienna, convening
the first International Forum on Global Citizenship
Education at Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg in
cooperation with the Korean Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and the Salzburg Global Seminar, and our
ongoing endeavors in Elevating the Voices of
Women in Agriculture and Climate Adaptation,
we persevered as a platform for positive change,
empowerment, leadership, and advocacy.
I hold firm in my confidence that the Ban Ki-moon
Centre, together with our partners and friends, will
persist in advocating for the implementation of
the SDGs and our manifold goals and ideals. Our
commitment to empowering women and youth
globally, in the spirit of global citizenship, remains
resolute.
Within this year’s report, you will discover inspiring
examples of youth leadership, aspiration, empathy,
and agency. I encourage you to join the collective
efforts worldwide to contribute towards making our
world a better place.
With gratitude and optimism,
Ban Ki-moon, Co-chair
Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens
Dear Friends of the Ban Ki-moon Centre,
As 2023 is the sixth year since the founding of the Ban
Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens, it gives me a great
opportunity to reminisce on the many milestones we
have achieved.
Over the years, we have been actively engaged with
dozens of governments and academic institutions,
thousands of youth leaders, and civil society representatives,
and worked with many international
organizations, and, as a result, expanded our
programmatic work and impact to empower women
and youth in all corners of the globe.
We are doing our share to implement the SDGs and
the Paris Climate Agreement by focusing on climate,
education, youth, and women.
In 2023, I am certain that we, as the BKMC, globally
elevated the climate adaptation agenda and
advocated for climate resilience and food security
with smallholder farmers, particularly women and
youth in Sub-Saharan Africa.
We continued to work on enshrining the SDGs and
climate action in all lifelong education and learning.
Moreover, we successfully hosted an International
Forum on Global Citizenship Education bringing
SDG4 on quality education into the spotlight together
with the Salzburg Global Seminar and with the
support of the Government of the Republic of Korea.
We worked with the support of the Austrian
Government on the advancement of the Sustainable
Development Goals and the review of Austria´s
national progress in implementing the Agenda 2030.
We successfully co-hosted the third SDG Dialogforum
in October, which brought together ministers,
students, and civil society, and reached more than
21,000 people.
Our work with changemakers around the world also
continues, as we highlight their stories, encourage
them to act, and provide guidance on how to
contribute to zero hunger, quality education, climate
action, gender equality, and many more Global Goals.
One of my highlights of the year was traveling
to the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi, Kenya,
where I met more than 20 African Ban Ki-moon
Centre changemakers and thanked them for their
commitment to the SDGs and the future of our climate.
It is wonderful to see how they lead by example.
None of these developments would be possible
without the leadership of President Heinz Fischer
and the commitment of the BKMC management and
team.
As you are about to explore this report, I hope we can
inspire you, dear reader, to act and contribute to a
humanity that is led by global citizen leaders. I remain
confident that in 2024 we will continue to inspire
decision-makers and empower change-makers to
care for people, planet, and prosperity.
OUR THEORY OF CHANGE
Vision
Our vision is that humanity is guided by global citizen leaders who care for people, planet, and prosperity.
Mission
Our mission is to foster leadership for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the
Paris Climate Agreement by inspiring current leaders and empowering the next generation of changemakers.
Our Work
Our work is guided by the Agenda 2030 and the Paris Climate Agreement under the co-leadership of Ban Ki-moon and
Heinz Fischer. We advocate for governmental policymaking on global issues such as sustainable development,
climate action, gender justice, and transformative education while offering direct opportunities for young
potential leaders to amplify their voices and become equipped with SDG knowledge, 21 st -century skills, and
global citizenship values.
greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening resilience,
and enhancing capacities and abilities to adapt to
climate change before the end of the century.
Similarly, the implementation of the 2030 Agenda
for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), also known as Global
Goals, and their associated 169 targets provide a
roadmap for peace and prosperity, ensuring that
no one is left behind by 2030. The SDGs reflect
an understanding that sustainable development
everywhere must integrate economic growth, social
inclusion, and environmental protection. Each
country has promised to achieve the 17 SDGs by 2030.
Despite the fact that the SDGs and the Paris Climate
Agreement have massively driven action, on all fronts,
much more is needed. Guided by the roadmap laid
out by the 2030 Agenda, we aim to empower women,
youth, and leaders across borders to create change.
Working with governments, civil society, academia,
and international organizations, the BKMC advocates
for agricultural adaptation, global citizenship
education, and SDG implementation, and offers
young global citizens tailor-made academic and
leadership training, networking opportunities, and
guidance to implement SDG Micro-Projects.
The Ban Ki-moon Centre’s mission is to foster
leadership for the Paris Climate Agreement and the
SDGs by inspiring current leaders and empowering
the next generation of changemakers to act as global
citizen leaders for people, planet, and prosperity.
OUR FRAMEWORK
In 2015, during his tenure as the 8th Secretary-General
of the United Nations, BKMC Co-chair Ban Ki-moon
led the adoption of two major commitments that aim
to protect our planet and its people: The Paris Climate
Agreement and The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development.
Together, these two frameworks build a roadmap
for humanity to a better future. They are a universal
call to action to eradicate extreme poverty with
strategies that build economic growth and address
social inequalities including education, health, social
protection, and job opportunities while tackling
climate change and environmental protection.
Working tirelessly to make climate action a priority
for national governments, Ban Ki-moon was behind
a once-in-a-lifetime moment in history at the COP21
in 2015 when 196 nations unanimously committed
to the Paris Climate Agreement. It is the first universal,
legally binding global agreement to fight the climate
crisis. This was a crucial starting point in reducing
ELEVATING AGRICULTURAL
ADAPTATION
Goal:
Advocate for increased financial and political
commitment to increase global climate
adaptation efforts, particularly benefiting the
resilience of smallholder farmers to climate
change.
Key Partners:
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Citizen
Target Recepient Countries:
Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Zambia
In response to the devastating effects of heatwaves,
droughts, and floodings on the lives and livelihoods
of smallholder farmers, the BKMC’s Elevating Agricultural
Adaptation Program (EAA) encourages world
leaders to significantly increase their commitments
to build the climate resilience of smallholder farmers
and their ever-increasing challenges in adapting to
climate change, particularly women and youth in
Sub-Saharan Africa.
Throughout the year, the BKMC with the EAA program
has been actively engaged in a series of major events
and impactful initiatives to advance agricultural
adaptation efforts globally. Collaborative activities
with partner countries and groups, such as Germany,
the United Kingdom, the European Commission,
©BKMC – Tilman Vogler / Co-chair Ban Ki-moon, CEO Monika
Froehler meet with German Climate Envoy and State Secretary
Jennifer Morgan.
and government representatives from Ghana, Kenya,
Rwanda, and Zambia have been pivotal. Several
virtual and in-person meetings were undertaken
to develop and deliver advocacy interventions. A
significant high-level mission trip to Berlin in March
2023 where BKMC Co-chair Ban Ki-moon conducted
bilateral meetings with German Food & Agriculture
Minister Cem Özdemir and German State Secretary
Jennifer Morgan developed our partnership leading
to a co-hosted COP28 official event on the topic.
The BKMC was active at international conferences like
the Bonn Climate Change Conference, the Fairtrade
General Assembly, and the Summit for a New Global
Financial Pact in Paris.
Regional engagement has also been significant. The
BKMC co-hosted an event with RELX at the London
Climate Action Week as well as at the Africa Climate
Another highlight was facilitating the attendance
of BKMC Youth AgriChampions for the first time at
COP28, marking a milestone in their involvement
in global climate negotiations. The selection and
advocacy efforts of the second cohort of BKMC
Youth AgriChampions, representing multiple African
countries and culminating in a demand paper for
global leaders, showcased the program’s investment
in empowering young agricultural leaders.
Through these multifaceted initiatives, the EAA
program has demonstrated its continued dedication
to climate adaptation.
WEBINAR SERIES
The 17 Youth Agri Champions, selected from hundreds
of applications, then presented these demands to the
BKMC’s Co-chairs, Ban Ki-moon and Dr. Heinz Fischer,
high-level bilateral meetings, as well as international
climate conferences, including the Africa Climate
Summit and COP28. One of the highlights during
the Africa Climate Summit was a meet and greet
of BKMC´s Agri-Champions with BKMC Co-chair
Ban Ki-moon where they were able to network, listen
to each other’s stories, as well as hear encouraging
words from Ban Ki-moon.
The demand paper “Capacity Building for Smallholder
Farmers Adapting to Climate Change” was officially
unveiled and presented at a BKMC-hosted Official
Side Event at COP28 with CGIAR, FAO, and Fairtrade
International “The role of youth in smallholder agriculture”.
The paper was handed over to global
leaders, including representatives of Germany and
Kenya, bringing the urgent policy demands of young
smallholder farmers to the forefront of discussion
and action.
Finally, Youth Argi Champion Eliud Rugut participated
in the COP28 event “Farming for our Future: Growing
Climate Resilience”, hosted by the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation, sharing the stage with Bill Gates,
and presenting his on-the-ground experiences in
adapting practices to climate change.
The demand paper still serves as an invaluable tool
for Ban Ki-moon and the BKMC team in their global
advocacy work to promote the climate adaptation
Farmers to Climate Change.”
Goal:
Foster a network of young African smallholder
farmers and agri-preneurs committed to tackling
climate change and improving agricultural
adaptation in their communities; Develop an
annual demand paper highlighting the needs of
smallholder farmers in adapting to climate change
to amplify the BKMC global advocacy work.
Target Recepient Countries:
Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Zambia
Over the course of summer 2023, the second edition
of the Youth AgriChampions Workshop Series brought
together a group of outstanding 17 young smallholder
farmers, agri-preneurs, and farmer representatives
from Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Zambia
through three workshops to develop a demand paper
on capacity building for climate change adaptation.
Inspired by insights from Elizabeth Nsimadala,
President of the East Africa Farmers Federation,
and Nicoline de Haan, Director of the CGIAR
GENDER Impact Platform, the Youth AgriChampion
developed a concrete set of three demands to
address the challenges they believe farmers face
to having sustainable and profitable businesses.
The three demands were 1) investing in extension
services, 2) tailoring capacity building to women’s
needs, and 3) strengthening the link between policy,
science, and practice.
needs of smallholder farmers.
The climate crisis perpetuates structural inequalities,
meaning women and girls face limited rights to
land, resources, and decision-making spaces. With
the EVWA Campaign, the BKMC uses a two-fold
approach to respond to these challenges: the EVWA
Changemakers Campaign and the EVWA Council.
ELEVATING THE VOICES OF WOMEN
IN AGRICULTURE
Goal:
Raise global awareness of women farmers’
realities in Africa by giving global visibility to
innovative projects of young changemakers,
reward an exceptional changemaker with
financial support, and develop actionable policy
Since its launch in April 2022, the BKMC’s “EVWA
Campaign – Elevating the Voices of Women in
Agriculture” has continued to raise global awareness
of women farmers’ experienced realities and
to showcase policy and grassroots actions that
contribute to their empowerment.
Women account for nearly half of the world’s
smallholder farmers. In Africa, they produce 70% of
the continent’s food. Even though they play a key
role in Africa’s food security, gender inequality and
the climate crisis pose disproportionate barriers for
women smallholder farmers, making them the most
vulnerable members of the farming community.
On International Rural Women’s Day, 15 th October, the
BKMC kicked off the annual EVWA Changemakers
Campaign, which recognizes and gives a platform to
exceptional young African leaders under 30 years old
and their projects contributing to women’s farmers’
access to land, resources, finance, skills, and inputs.
Through the BKMC’s website and social media
channels, 20 changemakers and their projects
from 10 African countries received global visibility.
One EVWA Changemaker with an outstanding
innovative, impactful, and inspiring project is
Njieforti Princewill Gana and his organization
“SustainAfric” won the EVWA Champion 2023 award
along with seed funding and the production of a
multi-media documentary.
Widow farmers in particular struggle to provide food
and education for their children and families, as their
properties and land are often confiscated by their inlaws.
To tackle this issue, Gana and his organization
in collaboration with the Widows Association of Tiko
Subdivision, Cameroon, train widows in snail farming.
The women learn how to use the shells, feces, slime,
and flesh of African Giant Snails to create delicacies,
food for animals, cosmetics, and manure for crops.
So far, SustainAfric has trained 350 women in the
Subdivision of Tiko, Cameroon.
In addition, the BKMC strengthened its advocacy work
with the EVWA Council. Composed of 11 high-level
experts from academia, international organizations,
NGOs, and governmental representatives, the EVWA
Council works with women smallholder farmers, and
young changemakers to address the challenges
of accessing land, resources, and leadership. The
BKMC and the EVWA Council will publish the policy
recommendations throughout 2024 culminating in
an official launch.
Provide a learning platform for youth to learn
about climate change and discover ways to
venture into a green career.
Key Partners:
Dubai Cares, Plan International, Unbounded
Associates
The coming of age of the biggest young generation in
history will determine the future of our planet and its
people. At the same time, the climate crisis increases
the imperative for sustainable careers and green jobs.
The BKMC with the support of Dubai Cares aims to
bridge the gap between youth skills and talent for
green jobs and advocate to transform education that
empowers the current and the next generation to
choose jobs that tackle the climate crisis.
The “Your Future in Green Jobs – Online Training and
Mentoring” program showcases that green jobs
are attractive, accessible, and achievable for young
people (14-20 years old) and provides a tool for them
to reflect on how they can contribute to a green
transformation. This initiative, which supports youth
in choosing a green career was initiated by the signing
of a Memorandum of Understanding between the
BKMC and Dubai Cares in January 2023.
At the COP28’s RewirEd Summit, Dubai Cares’ flagship
platform advocating for transformed education
systems as the core enabler for a sustainable future
for people and planet, the online course “Your Future
in Green Jobs – Find a Green Career Pathway” officially
launched at the panel session on “Green Jobs:
Paving the Way to a Sustainable Future”. This free and
self-paced course consists of six modules and has
interactive assignments, videos, and reflection spaces,
designed to help learners connect their passions,
interests, and skills with meaningful careers and
address climate change head-on.
In 2024 and 2025, the BKMC will carry out a mentoring
program connected to the online course for a total
of 45 young people to dive deeper into this learning
journey and create their own SDG Micro-Projects.
Building on their knowledge from the course, the
participants will be able to apply their green skills to
practice by being matched with professionals in the
field of green jobs. With their mentors, they will take
their own steps to contribute to climate action and
find their role in this common endeavor.
coordinated by the BKMC focused on the topics of
marketing, sustainable businesses, and fundraising
and resource mobilization, further developing the
scholars’ skill sets. As the final outcome, each scholar
implemented their own SDG Micro-Project over a
6-month period, identifying a problem within their
local community and working towards a sustainable
solution.
The SDG Micro-Projects carried out by this year’s
scholars with the support of seed funding ranged
from awareness raising about cervical cancer through
community outreaches in Rwanda to capturing
mental health stories through photography in
Kenya, as well as training young people to build
ACCELERATOR FUND
Goal:
Provide resources and funds to BKMC alumni
to scale and accelerate the impact of their SDG
Micro-Projects.
Key Partners:
Ban Ki-moon Foundation, New York, USA
There is a lack of financial resources available for
emerging young intersectional leadership addressing
the implementation of the SDGs and sustainable
development across the world. Particularly, efforts
led by historically excluded communities on the
Latin American, African, and Asian continents are
underfunded.
Therefore, the “Accelerator Fund for Grassroots and
Transnational Leadership” aims at providing seed
grants to support grassroots leaders who are making
waves for the SDGs; non-profits advancing local
efforts via cross-sector partnerships that accelerate
local progress toward the SDGs; and collaboration
among grassroots leaders and networks between
regions and countries on similar issues of transnational
concern.
Joining forces, the Accelerator Fund is a cooperative
program between the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global
Citizens and its sister organization, the Ban Ki-moon
Foundation in New York.
©BKMC – Zoom screenshot from the closing call of the program.
To ensure that the fund is distributed based on
just, meaningful, and transparent criteria, the BKMC
Network decided to collaborate closely with a
committee of eight BKMC changemakers alumni on
key decisions throughout the entire grant-making
process.
During the first grant cycle open only to BKMC
alumni, the fund received an outstanding 33 nominations
including various projects within the piloting,
full implementation, and scaling phases on issues
including food security, quality education, gender
equality, infrastructure, and climate change. The
winners will be announced in Spring 2024.
At its core, this program strengthens the Ban Ki-moon
Centre’s mission to foster leadership towards the
implementation of the SDGs and facilitates global
partnerships whilst actively furthering the philanthropic
agency of young changemakers. The
BKMC is already exploring the possibility of further
collaboration for future grant cycles.
ABOUT AND IMPACT
Young changemakers have a crucial role to play in
the implementation of the SDGs. Therefore, the BKMC
encourages and trains young global citizens all over
the globe to undertake SDG Micro-Projects in their
local communities. BKMC fellows, scholars, and
mentees are encouraged to identify a real-world
challenge, work on solutions, and venture out to make
a change with targeted actions for the SDGs that
reach a wide network of people. With these projects,
the young leaders address a specific societal challenge
that needs to be transformed into an opportunity.
Everyone in the BKMC network shares the conviction
that small actions, taken by each person, can move
mountains and can ultimately play a crucial role in
achieving the SDGs. This conviction is integrated into
various BKMC programs to equip young and dedicated
individuals with the skills, knowledge, and
network they need to become agents of change for
the achievement of the SDGs.
By December 2023, the BKMC has successfully guided
361 young leaders to develop 279 SDG Micro-Projects,
reaching a total of 800,000 beneficiaries on the ground.
For the success of the young leaders, the BKMC
offers guidance and mentorship from initial ideation
to the final steps of project implementation and
guidance in scaling the success and impact of their
SDG Micro-Projects.
Regional Distribution of the SDG
Micro-Projects around the Globe
SDG Micro-Projects can be implemented in one or
many locations. While some tackle local community
issues, some go beyond borders and regions to
propose solutions for the globe. The BKMC aims
to reach young leaders all around the world;
therefore, it conducts programs targeting different
areas of the world. The pie chart showcases the
regional distribution of the total SDG Micro-Projects
implemented to date.
GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT &
EMPOWERMENT FORUM
The Global Engagement & Empowerment Forum
(GEEF) is a crucial platform to explore and promote
global partnerships and turn crises into opportunities
for our common future.
Hosted at the Yonsei University on February 2-3, 2023,
the event examined the progress at the mid-point of
the SDGs under the theme “Turning Point: From Crisis
into Opportunity”.
In the special conversation “Leaving no one behind
in our post-pandemic recovery”, BKMC Co-chairs
Ban Ki-moon and Heinz Fischer urged generations
to work together for our common future. They spoke
about the state of the world including topics such
as climate, sustainability, global citizenship, gender
equality, youth empowerment, US-China relations,
Ukraine, and many more.
The forum was co-moderated by BKMC CEO Monika
Froehler, who summarized the overall input and
outcome as “artistic, scientific, innovative, and
research- and education-oriented”.
Moreover, the BKMC hosted a virtual panel discussion
on “Greening Education in a Time of Climate Crisis”.
Ahead of COP28, the all-women panel encouraged
stakeholders to support UNESCO’s Greening
Education Partnership and illustrated international
pathways and opportunities for greening education
from Europe, the US, the Middle East, and Africa.
4GAMECHANGERS FESTIVAL
On May 16, 2023, the BKMC featured for the second
time at the 4GameChangers Festival. In a Fireside
Chat on “4Future Day”, the spotlight fell on the
BKMC’s work to foster leadership for the implementation
of the SDGs and the Paris Climate
Agreement by inspiring current decision-makers and
empowering the next generation of changemakers.
The Q&A between Co-chair Heinz Fischer and CEO
Monika Froehler, following a video statement from
Co-chair Ban Ki-moon, laid the foundation for
discussions on the work of the BKMC, highlighting
good leadership in the 21 st -century, and empowering
youth who are making a difference in their
communities by showcasing successful SDG Micro-
Projects from four BKMC alumni.
BKMC VISIT IN DUBAI
On March 8, 2023, International Women’s Day,
Co-chairs Ban Ki-moon and Heinz Fischer and CEO
Monika Froehler convened the Ban Ki-moon Centre’s
first in-person board meeting in Vienna, Austria since
the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Board was warmly welcomed by H.E. Talal
Alfassam, Ambassador and Permanent Representative
of Kuwait to the UN in Vienna, who hosted an official
welcome dinner ahead of the meeting. Kuwait,
the Republic of Korea, and Austria have remained
steadfast supporters of the Ban Ki-moon Centre since
its inception.
During the official board meeting, CEO Monika
Froehler presented the BKMC’s programmatic activities,
covering, amongst other topics, climate change,
education, and women and youth empowerment.
As of that date, the Ban Ki-moon Centre had reached
900,000 people in over 60 countries, providing advice
to governments on the effective implementation
of the SDGs and the Paris Climate Agreement. CEO
Froehler also highlighted the enhancements to the
Centre’s digital presence with the launch of a new
website and increased visibility in traditional and
digital media, marking the celebration of the BKMC’s
5 th anniversary.
Special Advisor to the President and Chair of the
Global Green Growth Institute, Dave H. Kim, joined the
board meeting to discuss Ban Ki-moon’s leadership
role in GGGI and its efforts to support inclusive and
sustainable economic growth in developing countries
and emerging economies. Updates on the progress
of the US Foundation of the Ban Ki-moon Centre
were provided by board members Kim Won-soo and
Monika Froehler, along with Kate Landon, Strategic
Engagement Director for the US Foundation in New
York.
The Board deliberated on strategic approaches to
promote the BKMC’s mission and vision, addressing
the ongoing international lack of leadership for the
SDGs and the Paris Climate Agreement. Discussions
also focused on developing new programmatic and
funding opportunities for women and young people.
In January 2023, Co-chair Ban Ki-moon and CEO
Monika Froehler led a mission to UAE on climate
change, green jobs, and quality education. In Dubai,
they met leading educators, signed a new partnership
with Dubai Cares to empower youth for climate action,
and interacted with youth delegates at the biggest
Model United Nations in the region.
held discussions with different student groups and
teachers. The BKMC is grateful for the generous
support of GEMS World Academy.
ENGAGEMENTS IN NEW YORK
In 2023, the BKMC further intensified their close
collaboration with the Ban Ki-moon Foundation
(BKMF) in New York. In March, BKMF Executive Director
Kate Landon visited Vienna as part of the BKMF’s
advisory board.
In July, as part of the HLPF, the BKMC and the BKMF
jointly hosted a high-level event at the Austrian
Cultural Forum New York, featuring a stellar panel of
women leaders coming together for a cross-sector
discussion on “Inspiring Female Leadership for the
SDGs”. Moderated by CEO Monika Froehler, women
leaders from government, the private sector,
philanthropy, and academia debated how women’s
power must be leveraged to truly achieve the global
goals.
During New York Climate Week, which ran in parallel
with the UN General Assembly and the SDG Summit
in September, former COO Katrin Harvey was again
part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s
Goalkeepers. She participated in several Goalkeepersrelated
events where she met inspiring partners
and experts from all around the world. On the SDG
weekend, former COO Katrin Harvey was able to sit
in sessions at the UN Headquarters, discussing
climate change and agriculture, as well as climate
finance solutions. She spoke at Nature4Climate’s
ON THE HORIZON
Navigating Global Challenges with Purpose and
Progress
Under the leadership of our co-chairs, we have
successfully concluded 2023, and we will have
many opportunities in 2024 to continue to inspire
and foster leadership for the SDGs and the Paris
Climate Agreement with global leaders and young
changemakers.
In the realm of climate action, SDG 13, we will continue
to advocate for commitments and resources for
research and development in climate adaptation and
amplify the demands and voices of youth smallholder
farmers to realize SDG 2, Zero Hunger.
This year, we are proud to expand our reach through
the “Online Executive Training – Young Women
Leadership in Climate Adaptation” micro-project
implementation phase. Our expert council on
“Elevating Women Voices on Agriculture” is working
on three policy papers that will shed light on the
major problems of women smallholders in Sub-
Saharan Africa. We will also recognize and award
another EVWA Champion to share success stories of
women farmers’ empowerment.
Our collaboration with the Austrian government takes
center stage as Austria submits its second Voluntary
National Report to the UN this year. Especially in
this election year, our work with the Austrian
government and civil society promises to remain
an internationally unique force advocating for
sustainable development in the BKMC’s host country.
Building upon the success of the first International
Forum on Global Citizenship Education in Salzburg,
we are grateful for the support of the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea and the
Salzburg Global Seminar to host a second Forum on
Global Citizenship Education.
We will continue to empower youth with the BKMC’s
training, scholarship, and mentorship programs and
play an active role in Mission 4.7 alongside UNESCO
and SDSN. We will aspire to our ambitious goal of
reaching 10,000 young people globally with our
online course and training on green jobs.
Our collaboration with our New York sister office, the
Ban Ki-moon Foundation, promises to be fruitful and
reinforces our dedication to the next generation of
leaders as we scale their SDG Micro-Projects.
As we venture into 2024, the BKMC remains steadfast
in its commitment to driving positive change.
Together, as global citizens, let us continue to strive
for a more sustainable and equitable future.
