AMSA RURAL HEALTH Congratulations on completing medical school! It is a remarkable achievement to have finished this long university journey, a culmination of enduring lectures, early morning surgery ward rounds, the quest for anatomy mnemonics, and a myriad of other memories. As you embark on your journey as a medical professional, I encourage you to consider the prospects of rural internship and rural medicine. The rural landscape offers a vibrant, multifaceted environment teeming with unexpected marvels, a close-knit and welcoming community, picturesque scenery adorned with waterfalls or coastal vistas bathed in sunshine, engaging community festivities, quaint locales bustling with life, and cafes brimming with tales. Not to mention the likelihood of enjoying a short commute or leisurely stroll to work each day! Here, the realm of medicine expands, presenting boundless opportunities to engage deeply with teams and patients, administer holistic treatments, and perform procedures in the operating theatre. Wherever you choose to practise, medicine, the rural health crisis and its impacts are likely challenges you will face in you upcoming career as a medical professional. In this, I think it is important for us to acknowledge our role in improving rural healthcare. I highly encourage you all to explore the rural medicine section of this guide to gain a better understanding of the rural pathways available to you and discover the enriching possibilities that rural medicine holds for you!
