2024 Internship Guide

Dear Colleagues
We want to congratulate AMSA on the production of the 2024 Internship
Guide and thank them for the opportunity to contribute to the Guide on
behalf of AMA ACT. I also want to extend a special congratulations to you!
Arriving at the decision of where to undertake internship is not only exciting,
but reflective of your years of dedication and success.
While the graduates of the ANU Medical School are well-acquainted with the
benefits of living, studying and working in the ACT, not every prospective
intern knows that Canberra has a combination of city convenience, national
institutions, and ease of living; with the added bonus of the bush, coast and
the snow fields a short drive away.
For many of you, receiving a full-time income will be a very welcome change.
However, as you've likely observed in your senior colleagues, time will soon
become your most precious commodity. One of the distinct advantages of
choosing an internship in the ACT is the ease and brevity of our commute
times, allowing you more opportunity to manage your work-life balance
effectively.
The ACT offers placements at the Canberra Hospital, North Canberra Hospital,
Goulburn Base Hospital and the South-East Regional Hospital at Bega offering
rotations across south-eastern NSW. This diversity in placements affords a
wide range of experience, from working in a large tertiary trauma center to
playing a crucial role in providing healthcare to our rural Australian
communities.
Combine this with the big ideas and national agenda that's at the heart of
Canberra, and you can understand why an internship in the ACT offers many
opportunities that aren't always obvious at first glance.
INTERN SUPPORT
Locally, the AMA ACT offers support and guidance to interns and other junior
doctors covering the two major areas of workplace relations and careers. We
also offer an opportunity to connect with colleagues, build your networks, get
involved in advocacy, and make friends.
As we write this, we are close to finalising a new enterprise agreement
including enhanced education allowances and access to exam and
conference leave, access to RDOs, workforce triggers to identify excessive
JMO workloads, and dealing with the perennial issues around overtime.
