OVERVIEW The Junior Doctor Training Program — previously known as the Commonwealth Medical Internship (CMI), is a federally funded initiative for full-fee paying international students who have completed their entire medical education in Australian universities (Priority 1) and those who have MBA provisional registration as a medical practitioner (Priority 2). Private Hospital Streams (PHS) PHS supports PGY1-3 placements for medical graduates in private hospitals across Australia, with a focus on training junior doctors in rural, regional and remote areas. Through an Expression of Interest process, junior doctors are able to express interest for Private Hospital Stream PGY1 funded internship placements. The EOI process is available after states and territories have offered and filled their internship placements. For more information, see here. List of Participating Hospitals The following private hospitals are funded from 2020-2024 for up to 115 (2022) PGY1 internship positions: Mater Health Services North Queensland (PGY1) Mercy Health and Aged Care Central Queensland through Mater Private Hospital Bundaberg, Friendly Society Private Hospital Bundaberg, Bundaberg Base Hospital Bundaberg, Mackay Base Hospital Mackay and Mater Misericordiae Hospital Mackay (PGY1, PGY2, PGY3) Greenslopes Private Hospital, Queensland (PGY1, PGY2, PGY3) Calvary Health Care Riverina, New South Wales (PGY2) Mater Hospital Sydney (PGY1) St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney (PGY1) MQ Health, New South Wales (Macquarie University Hospital) (PGY1) St John of God Ballarat Hospital, Victoria – Grampians Intern Training Program (PGY1) Ramsay Health Care, Western Australia (Joondalup) (PGY1, PGY2, PGY3)
ELIGIBILITY Under the PHS, participating private hospitals must prioritise eligible international full fee paying medical graduates from onshore Australian medical schools (Priority One). Should the PHS places not be filled with applicants from the Priority One category, private hospitals may recruit eligible applicants with provisional registration (Priority Two). Priority One This will be allocated to onshore Australian-trained final year medical students who are eligible for an internship under the PHS. Final year medical students must meet all of the following eligibility criteria to be considered: Be a full-fee paying international student completing your medical degree in the current calendar year from a medical school in Australia, having completed all your medical degree in Australia (university-approved, shortterm elective rotation completed overseas are allowed) Have met the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) English language proficiency requirements for registration purposes Not an Australian Citizen Commit to obtaining an appropriate visa to work in Australia during the internship year (refer to the Department of Home Affairs website for details). Priority Two This will be considered when the list of Priority One applicants is exhausted and there are vacant PHS internship positions available. Priority Two applicants must meet all of the following eligibility criteria to be considered: Have met MBA provisional registration requirements as a medical practitioner Have met the MBA English language proficiency requirements for registration purposes commit to obtaining an appropriate visa to work in Australia during the internship year (refer to the Department of Home Affairs website for details). Ineligibility Applicants are NOT eligible for a placement under the PHS if they: Do not meet the Priority One or Priority Two eligibility criteria Have accepted an internship position from a state or territory government The EOI process for 2024 is expected to commence in the second half of 2023.
