There is acute shortage of high grade non-coking coal like ‘B’/’C’ grade suitable for making sponge iron. These units by sheer compulsion use low grade (‘F’ grade) coal due to non-availability of right linkages of coal of superior grade. To ensure that sponge iron plants get the right type of coal, quality Coal Blocks should be earmarked for ANNEXURE - 1 IRON ORE BENEFICIATION PLANT TYPICAL FEED & PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS sponge iron clusters. It is strongly recommended to use the beneficiated coal by bringing the ash level below 25%.
