The Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

Stubenrauch<br />

Professor Arnold V. Stubenrauch was closely associ<strong>at</strong>ed with Sh<strong>in</strong>n <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> work of <strong>the</strong> field st<strong>at</strong>ions, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g tree plant<strong>in</strong>g. When Sh<strong>in</strong>n left <strong>in</strong><br />

1902 to become head ranger of <strong>the</strong> Sierra Forest Reserve, Stubenrauch filled<br />

<strong>the</strong> vacancy. The University president's report for 1902-04 mentioned<br />

Stubenrauch's plant<strong>in</strong>g experiments with promis<strong>in</strong>g eucalyptus <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Santa<br />

Monica st<strong>at</strong>ion. Knowledge ga<strong>in</strong>ed from work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>forestry</strong> st<strong>at</strong>ions and<br />

from work<strong>in</strong>g with Sh<strong>in</strong>n qualified Stubenrauch to particip<strong>at</strong>e with Jepson<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>forestry</strong> lectures <strong>in</strong> 1903.<br />

Wickson<br />

Edward J. Wickson, who had begun with <strong>the</strong> University <strong>in</strong> 1879 as<br />

lecturer <strong>in</strong> practical agriculture, <strong>in</strong> 1905 succeeded Hilgard as dean of agriculture<br />

and <strong>in</strong> 1907 as director of <strong>the</strong> Experiment St<strong>at</strong>ion. He became gre<strong>at</strong>ly<br />

<strong>in</strong>terested and well-<strong>in</strong>formed <strong>in</strong> <strong>forestry</strong>, perhaps from close associ<strong>at</strong>ion with<br />

Hilgard and Sh<strong>in</strong>n. Wickson's associ<strong>at</strong>ion with <strong>the</strong> Pacific Ru.ral Press had<br />

begun <strong>in</strong> 1875 and, for a number of years, he was <strong>the</strong> assistant editor with<br />

<strong>the</strong> title "special contributor." In 1898, he became <strong>the</strong> editor with <strong>the</strong> title<br />

"horticultural editor." This weekly paper had, <strong>in</strong> 1898, an average circul<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

of 8,856. By 1899, Wickson had become a most articul<strong>at</strong>e advoc<strong>at</strong>e for<br />

<strong>forestry</strong>. The Press's <strong>in</strong>dex for a six-month period <strong>in</strong> 1899 lists articles or<br />

news items on <strong>forestry</strong> and <strong>forestry</strong> educ<strong>at</strong>ion under 13 head<strong>in</strong>gs. Wickson<br />

had written <strong>the</strong> knowledgeable editorial on <strong>forestry</strong> educ<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> November<br />

11, 1899 issue immedi<strong>at</strong>ely after Wheeler's <strong>in</strong>augural. It <strong>in</strong>cluded a<br />

suggestion for beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g small <strong>at</strong> little cost. All th<strong>at</strong> was needed <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> outset<br />

was a s<strong>in</strong>gle addition to <strong>the</strong> faculty, a chair of <strong>forestry</strong>. The suggestion went<br />

unheeded, but it rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Wickson's m<strong>in</strong>d and he brought it up aga<strong>in</strong><br />

after becom<strong>in</strong>g dean.<br />

Jepson<br />

Willis L<strong>in</strong>n Jepson received his PhB from Berkeley <strong>in</strong> 1889 and began<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g botany <strong>in</strong> 1891. Emanuel Fritz, his close friend and confidant,<br />

wrote, "Dr. Jepson played an important role <strong>in</strong> forest conserv<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> California<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> turn of <strong>the</strong> century. [He] . . . was detailed by. . . Wheeler<br />

to <strong>at</strong>tend various forest conserv<strong>at</strong>ion meet<strong>in</strong>gs as official deleg<strong>at</strong>e. He thus<br />

became acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with P<strong>in</strong>chot, Fernow, Sh<strong>in</strong>n, Lukens and o<strong>the</strong>rs of <strong>the</strong><br />

early <strong>forestry</strong> pioneers."21 L<strong>at</strong>er Jepson was to have an important part <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> organiz<strong>at</strong>ion and activities of a student <strong>forestry</strong> club.<br />

Wheeler<br />

Although Wheeler had said <strong>in</strong> his <strong>in</strong>augural address th<strong>at</strong> a <strong>forestry</strong><br />

<strong>school</strong> was an "<strong>in</strong>stant need", he also po<strong>in</strong>ted out th<strong>at</strong> "<strong>the</strong> growth of <strong>the</strong><br />

student body <strong>in</strong> 10 years. . . from 306 to 1665 has taxed <strong>the</strong> ability and<br />

resource of <strong>the</strong> regents." He knew <strong>the</strong> money for <strong>forestry</strong> would be difficult<br />
