The Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs 17<br />

spirited <strong>in</strong>dividuals and organiz<strong>at</strong>ions which are work<strong>in</strong>g toward th<strong>at</strong><br />

end. I was obliged, however, to deprec<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> reflections made upon Yale<br />

University.<br />

"I shall take <strong>the</strong> liberty of transmitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> correspondence and your<br />

editorial to President Wheeler, to whom, of course <strong>the</strong> design<strong>at</strong>ion of our<br />

policy and procedure properly belongs."<br />

The March, 1906, issue of Wood and Iron followed up with almost two<br />

pages under <strong>the</strong> head<strong>in</strong>g, "A Pacific Coast Chair of Forestry." It led off<br />

with this paragraph:<br />

"This journal seems to be <strong>the</strong> only one on <strong>the</strong> western slope th<strong>at</strong> has<br />

<strong>the</strong> necessary amount of coast p<strong>at</strong>riotism <strong>at</strong> heart to urge <strong>the</strong> loc<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong><br />

Chair of Forestry on <strong>the</strong> shores of <strong>the</strong> Pacific. The N<strong>at</strong>ional Lumber Manufacturer's<br />

Associ<strong>at</strong>ion is endeavor<strong>in</strong>g to raise funds for <strong>the</strong> establishment of<br />

a Chair of Forestry <strong>at</strong> Yale, way back <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> elm-shaded prec<strong>in</strong>cts of classic<br />

New Haven. It is ak<strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> loc<strong>at</strong>ion of an oyster bed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shoals of Kansas<br />

this establishment so distant from <strong>the</strong> gre<strong>at</strong> timber belt."<br />

Thus went unheeded Wickson's admonishment about reflections on<br />

Yale. Under <strong>the</strong> caption, "Wh<strong>at</strong> Professor Wickson Says," Everett did not<br />

quote from Wickson's letter, but carried <strong>in</strong>stead a part of his address, "A<br />

<strong>forestry</strong> <strong>school</strong>'s work," before <strong>the</strong> Agricultural Club. However, a letter<br />

from Wheeler was pr<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> full. Here are excerpts:<br />

"I am most vigorously <strong>in</strong> symp<strong>at</strong>hy with your idea as expressed <strong>in</strong> your<br />

article. . . Certa<strong>in</strong>ly we ought to have <strong>the</strong> School of Forestry <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> University<br />

of California. A number of our students have been forced to go<br />

East.... I have recommended <strong>the</strong> establishment of a School of Forestry<br />

repe<strong>at</strong>edly <strong>in</strong> my Biennial Reports. -. It would seem to me th<strong>at</strong>, with five<br />

thousand <strong>in</strong> salaries and five thousand <strong>in</strong> equipment, we could beg<strong>in</strong> perfectly<br />

well. In fact, I believe we could start with seventy-five hundred. .<br />

The trouble is th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> University of California is impoverished <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> midst<br />

of California's gre<strong>at</strong>est prosperity."<br />

Everett commented as follows: "President Wheeler's view on <strong>the</strong> subj ect<br />

of <strong>the</strong> St<strong>at</strong>e University's meagre funds are well known and shared by<br />

gradu<strong>at</strong>es of th<strong>at</strong> gre<strong>at</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stitution, and this poverty should be<br />

relieved, but a Chair of Forestry, priv<strong>at</strong>ely endowed, will be free from<br />

neglect of <strong>the</strong> St<strong>at</strong>e politicians."<br />

Everett also reproduced an editorial from <strong>the</strong> San Francisco Call which<br />

said <strong>in</strong> part: "The University of California and Stanford University.<br />

are nearest to <strong>the</strong> gre<strong>at</strong> lumber <strong>in</strong>terest th<strong>at</strong> needs <strong>the</strong> foresters and proposes<br />

to tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. Then why not endow a <strong>forestry</strong> <strong>school</strong> <strong>in</strong> one of <strong>the</strong>se universities?<br />

. . . why waste such an endowment on Yale? . . . The only dendrological<br />

cl<strong>in</strong>ic <strong>the</strong>re is furnished by <strong>the</strong> elms of New Haven.. . Wood and<br />

Iron opposes <strong>the</strong> Yale proposition and upon grounds th<strong>at</strong> should be accepted<br />

by <strong>the</strong> lumber <strong>in</strong>terests."<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bieni'iiim follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 1909 session of <strong>the</strong> legisl<strong>at</strong>ure,<br />

Wheeler had <strong>the</strong> funds to stdrt <strong>forestry</strong> <strong>in</strong>struction. The money must have<br />

been <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> University's budget s<strong>in</strong>ce noth<strong>in</strong>g was said about a<br />

priv<strong>at</strong>e source and no special appropri<strong>at</strong>ion had been asked.<br />

Ironically, noth<strong>in</strong>g resulted.
