The Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs 15<br />

Charles G. Hyde (Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g), and Joseph N. LeConte (Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Mechanics) 27<br />

The earthquake of April 18, 1906 delayed <strong>the</strong> work of <strong>the</strong> committee,<br />

but by June 6 its report had been sent to Wheeler. The report28 st<strong>at</strong>ed:<br />

"We have carefully exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> curricula of eastern Forestry<br />

<strong>school</strong>s and compared <strong>the</strong> elements <strong>the</strong>reof with <strong>the</strong> courses of<br />

<strong>in</strong>struction now given <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> University of California, to ascerta<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir equivalence and correl<strong>at</strong>ion. As a result of this study we submit<br />

<strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

"First: a draft of a 'Pre-Forestry Course', of which a copy is<br />

transmitted herewith. This will serve two purposes: (a) suggestive<br />

to students who desire to take one or more years <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> University<br />

<strong>in</strong> order to ga<strong>in</strong> advanced stand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> an eastern <strong>in</strong>stitution offer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a full <strong>forestry</strong> course; (b) <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g a schedule for gradu<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

from this University which shall best prepare for a post-gradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

course <strong>in</strong> <strong>forestry</strong> <strong>at</strong> such an <strong>in</strong>stitution.<br />

"Second: <strong>the</strong> conimittee is conv<strong>in</strong>ced th<strong>at</strong> a student pursu<strong>in</strong>g<br />

this proposed Pre-Forestry Course will not only cover <strong>the</strong> subjects<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> an eastern <strong>forestry</strong> curriculum, but will enjoy a more<br />

full and thorough development of <strong>the</strong>se subjects <strong>in</strong> this University<br />

because our work is upon a two term (ra<strong>the</strong>r than a 3 term) per<br />

year basis and this permits more s<strong>at</strong>isfactory <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong><br />

subjects which <strong>in</strong> some eastern <strong>in</strong>stitutions must be more or less<br />

fragmentary. It may also be noted th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pre-Forestry Course<br />

which we propose has close eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g rel<strong>at</strong>ions and is <strong>in</strong> fact<br />

consistent with ultim<strong>at</strong>e acknowledgment of <strong>the</strong> successful student<br />

as a forest eng<strong>in</strong>eer. This is <strong>the</strong> end to which your committee<br />

believes university <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong> <strong>forestry</strong> must <strong>at</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> to be true to<br />

its name.<br />

"Third: it should be noted th<strong>at</strong> all <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> this<br />

Pre-Forestry Course is now given <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> University of California,<br />

except <strong>the</strong> special subjects marked with an asterisk (*) 29 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Senior Year. These perta<strong>in</strong> to <strong>forestry</strong> policy and practice and<br />

your committee is conv<strong>in</strong>ced th<strong>at</strong> provision for an Assistant Professor<br />

of Forestry would cover <strong>the</strong>se subjects for <strong>the</strong> present, and<br />

th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> University can offer a full <strong>forestry</strong> course when such an<br />

officer beg<strong>in</strong>s his work. The <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>at</strong>ion and equipment of a Department<br />

of Forestry can follow as soon as <strong>the</strong> additional cost<br />

<strong>the</strong>reof can be provided."<br />

ttLoren E. Hunt, lecturer <strong>in</strong> Civil Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, was subsequently added to <strong>the</strong> committee. Jepson prob.<br />

ubly would have been <strong>the</strong> Botany represent<strong>at</strong>ive on <strong>the</strong> committee had he not been <strong>in</strong> Europe. LeConte,<br />

no doubt, was appo<strong>in</strong>ted because of demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>teeest <strong>in</strong> <strong>forestry</strong>. In 1902, he had considered tak<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

forest supervisor position. However, he gave up <strong>the</strong> idea when P<strong>in</strong>chot <strong>in</strong> a letter on February 3, 1902, to<br />

W. R. Dudley of Stanfard (see details l<strong>at</strong>er <strong>in</strong> this chapter) made it pla<strong>in</strong> th<strong>at</strong> "his duties wsuld require his<br />

whole time thraughoist <strong>the</strong> year."<br />

tsThe Wickson Report, referred to <strong>in</strong> numerous correspondence sources, became <strong>the</strong> abject of a wide.<br />

spread search by Wieslander and Casamajor <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prepar<strong>at</strong>ion of this history. Many strange and dusty records<br />

depositories around <strong>the</strong> University were searched <strong>in</strong> va<strong>in</strong>. F<strong>in</strong>ally, on October 22, 1963, Mrs. Es<strong>the</strong>r Johnson,<br />

Forestry librarian, came upon <strong>the</strong> handwritten orig<strong>in</strong>al tucked away <strong>in</strong> a mislabeled envelope and recsgnized<br />

it as <strong>the</strong> long searched for document. It was a red-letter day fur am<strong>at</strong>eur historians.<br />

t0The special subjects were: Silviculture, 6 units; Forest Mensur<strong>at</strong>ion, 3 units; and Lumber<strong>in</strong>g, 3 units.
