THE ANNUAL MCDONALD-MERRILL-KETCHAM<br />
LECTURE/IndIana HeaLtH <strong>Law</strong> RevIew Symposium took<br />
place on November 5 and featured Dr. David Korn, Vice<br />
Provost <strong>of</strong> Research at Harvard University. The recipient <strong>of</strong><br />
the 2009 McDonald-Merrill-Ketcham Award, Dr. Korn spoke<br />
on conflicts <strong>of</strong> interest in medical research. Dr. Korn is also<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pathology at Harvard Medical <strong>School</strong>. From 1997<br />
to 2008 he served as Senior Vice President for Biomedical and<br />
Health Sciences Research, and in 2008 as Chief Scientific Officer<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Association <strong>of</strong> American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in<br />
Washington, D.C. Prior to his time at the AAMC, he served as<br />
Carl and Elizabeth Naumann Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Dean <strong>of</strong> the Stanford<br />
University <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medicine from October 1984 to April 1995,<br />
and as Vice President <strong>of</strong> Stanford University from January 1986 to<br />
April 1995. Before that he had served as Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Chairman<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Pathology at Stanford, and Chief <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Pathology Service at the Stanford University Hospital. Dr. Korn<br />
received his B.A. from Harvard College and medical degree from<br />
Harvard Medical <strong>School</strong>. He completed his residency training at<br />
Massachusetts General Hospital. He has been Chairman <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Stanford University Committee on Research; President <strong>of</strong> the<br />
American Association <strong>of</strong> Pathologists (now the American Society<br />
for Investigative Pathology), from which he received the Gold-<br />
Headed Cane Award for lifetime achievement in 2004; President<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Association <strong>of</strong> Pathology; a member <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong><br />
Staton Intramural Moot Court Competition<br />
The final argument <strong>of</strong> the Honorable Robert H. Staton<br />
Intramural Moot Court Competition took place in the Wynne<br />
Courtroom on November 9, 2009. The finals pitted the team<br />
<strong>of</strong> Jonathan Foltz and Stephen Simcox against the team <strong>of</strong><br />
Magdalena Karol and Cassandra Hoult. In a tightly-contested<br />
and entertaining argument during which both teams displayed<br />
top-notch advocacy, Jonathan and Steve prevailed. Cassandra<br />
was named the top advocate <strong>of</strong> the four finalists. After the<br />
argument, the judges praised both teams for their efforts.<br />
The Moot Court Board presented several awards to other<br />
Staton Competition participants. Steven Jensen and Ashley Yee<br />
received awards for writing the top briefs in the competition,<br />
and Jenai Mehra was honored as the top oral advocate from<br />
the competition’s preliminary rounds.<br />

Directors and the Executive Committee <strong>of</strong> the Federation <strong>of</strong><br />
American Societies for Experimental Biology; and a member <strong>of</strong><br />
the Board <strong>of</strong> Directors <strong>of</strong> the Association <strong>of</strong> Academic Health<br />
Centers. Dr. Korn was a founder and Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Board<br />
<strong>of</strong> Directors <strong>of</strong> the California Transplant Donor Network, one<br />
<strong>of</strong> the nation’s largest Organ Procurement Organizations. In the<br />
