Clinic Work<br />

ON APRIL 16, THE LAW SCHOOL HOSTED ITS<br />

ANNUAL PrO BONO AND CLINICAL PROGRAM<br />

RECEPTION IN THE CONOUR ATRIUM. The<br />

keynote speaker was Hon. Melissa May, ‘84, <strong>Indiana</strong> Court<br />

<strong>of</strong> Appeals. Judge May is also Chair <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Indiana</strong> Pro Bono<br />

Commission. In total, the class <strong>of</strong> 2010 contributed 15,138<br />

pro bono hours while in law school.<br />

Seventy-two J.D. students were recognized for their pro<br />

bono work. The John Paul Berlon Award for outstanding<br />

pro bono contributions was presented to Andrea Ciobanu,<br />

‘10, who completed more than 200 hours <strong>of</strong> pro bono work<br />

while in law school, for which she also received Gold Level<br />

recognition. The Gold Level (200+ Hours) was named for<br />

former Dean and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>, Norman Lefstein. This<br />

year the Silver Level (100-199 Hours) was named for the<br />

late Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Mary Harter Mitchell who passed away in<br />

November <strong>of</strong> 2009.<br />

The law school’s Clinical Program also honored students<br />

at the reception. The recipient <strong>of</strong> the Outstanding Clinic<br />

Student Award for 2009-10 was Matthew B. Keyes, ‘10.<br />

This award honors a clinic student who has demonstrated<br />

dedication to public interest work through representation<br />

and advocacy on behalf <strong>of</strong> clients in the clinic. While in<br />

school, Matt participated in two clinics and an externship<br />

with the Marion County Public Defender Agency. “Matt<br />

distinguished himself as a dedicated extern,” said Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Novella Nedeff, who supervised the externship.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Joanne Orr first came to know Matt when<br />

he participated as an intern in the Disability Clinic in spring<br />

2009. “While a student in the Disability Clinic, Matt provided<br />

effective and pr<strong>of</strong>essional representation to a young woman<br />

in an extremely complex case,” she said. Additionally,<br />

he completed the Advocacy Skills Concentration, taking<br />

courses in both the Civil and Criminal Tracks. Currently, he<br />

is working at the Marion County Public Defender Agency,<br />

assisting attorneys in Marion Superior Court 19.<br />
