IICLR Hosts Symposium on Corporate Social Responsibility<br />
The law school hosted the IndIana InteRnatIonal &<br />
CompaRatIve law RevIew Symposium on Friday, March<br />
26, 2010. This year’s topic was “Corporate Social<br />
Responsibility: Progress & Prospects for Multinational<br />
Business.”<br />
“Corporate Social Responsibility is the opposite <strong>of</strong><br />
shareholder pr<strong>of</strong>it maximization,” said Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Frank<br />
Emmert, John S. Grimes Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> and Director,<br />
Center for International and Comparative <strong>Law</strong>. “Instead<br />
<strong>of</strong> narrowly looking at the short term bottom line <strong>of</strong><br />
shareholders, more and more corporations are committing<br />
to go beyond their legal obligations to include respect<br />
for ethical standards and cultural norms in their strategic<br />
planning for the benefit <strong>of</strong> the environment, clients and<br />
consumers at large, employees, local communities, and<br />
other stakeholders.”<br />
He explained further, “While it may seem counterintuitive,<br />
countless examples demonstrate that such a<br />
long-term approach to good corporate citizenship not only<br />
benefits the public interest but also the prosperity <strong>of</strong> the<br />
enterprises and their owner.”<br />
The event consisted <strong>of</strong> three panels <strong>of</strong> speakers, the<br />
first <strong>of</strong> which focused on “Emerging Global Standards in<br />

& Environmental Protection;” and the final panel<br />
addressed “CSR in Comparative Perspectives.”<br />
“Our symposium analyzed the evolving international<br />
standards for corporate social responsibility with specific<br />
reference to the Americas, Western Europe, China, and the<br />
Middle East. Since it provided cutting edge information<br />
and opportunities for discussion with leading experts, the<br />
symposium was ideal for managers and legal advisers to<br />
multinational corporations in the Mid-West and beyond,”<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Emmert said.<br />
