Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition characterized by
the breakdown of the joint’s cartilage. As the body ages,
cartilage deteriorates and tendons and ligaments stretch,
which causes the bones to rub against each other, resulting
in stiffness, pain and loss of joint movement.
Osteoarthritis, as the most common type of arthritis,
occurs in the weight bearing joints of the hips, knees,
and spine. Among the over 100 different types of arthritis
conditions, osteoarthritis affects over 20 million people in
the United States.
Causes
Primary osteoarthritis is mostly related to aging. As we age,
the water content of the cartilage increases, and the protein
makeup of cartilage degenerates. Constant use of the worn
joints over the years can irritate and inflame the cartilage,
causing joint pain and swelling.
Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis include:
• Pain. Your joint may hurt during or after movement. This is
the most common symptom.
• Tenderness. Your joint may feel tender when you apply light
pressure to it.
• Stiffness. Joint stiffness may be most noticeable when you
wake up in the morning or after a period of inactivity.
• Loss of flexibility. Loss of full range of movement.
• Grating sensation. You may hear or feel a grating sensation
when you use the joint.
Diagnosis
A physical exam can show:
• Joint movement may cause a cracking (grating) sound
• Joint swelling (bones around the joints may feel larger
than normal)
• Limited range of motion
• Tenderness when the joint is pressed
• Normal movement is often painful
Treatment
The goals of treatment are to:
• Increase the strength of the joints
• Maintain or improve joint movement
• Reduce the disabling effects of the disease
• Relieve pain
