Diabetes planogram review 

The diabetes planograms have been updated to help 

support the consumer with diabetes. Both the eight-foot 

and four-foot sections have been refreshed to add new 

items and allow for better “at shelf decision making.” 

With over 24 million Americans (8% of the population) 

having to deal with diabetes on a daily basis, this is one 

of the most important sections of the pharmacy. The 

growth of the category continues to increase due to 

the fact that one million new patients are diagnosed 

each year. This will lead to more than 48 million 

Americans having diabetes by 2050. This disease 

touches everyone in some way every day. 

COMPLETELY UP FRONT 

A consumer with diabetes 

spends five times more 

in a pharmacy than a 

shopper without diabetes. 

One dollar out of every $10 

healthcare dollars is attributed 

to diabetes. It is extremely 

important to attract this 

consumer and keep them in 

your pharmacy. Your diabetes 

section needs to be clearly 

defined and fully stocked. 

The refreshed diabetes 

planogram includes a triangular space saver sign so test 

strips can be kept behind the pharmacy counter. The 

CINs are included on the sign with color images and 

descriptions. 

We have added TriDerma items, Bruise Healing, Ulcer 

Healing and Foot Healing creams. TriDerma is a medical 

strength skin healing moisturizing line of diabetic

glucose lows (hypoglycemia) quickly and 

efficiently. The products are specifically 

formulated with pure d-glucose over

levels back into a normal range. These products are 

preferred by physicians over colas, candies or juice to bring 

blood sugar levels back in line. The packaging is portable 

and easy to use. 

There are two options available 

for A1c testing in this set that was 

introduced last year. Bayer’s A1c 

Now for immediate results, and 

Appraise A1c, from Heritage Labs. 

Appraise allows the consumer with 

diabetes to send the samples in 

for lab results. Please ensure your

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) 

1. What do the various blocks mean in the Home Healthcare 

catalog? 

A block with an M in it indicates that this product, 

or group of products, may be reimbursable under 

Medicare Part B. Please contact the Pricing Data 

Analysis Contractor at 877.735.1326 to obtain the 

specific HCPCS codes and modifiers necessary for 

billing, as this information changes frequently. Further information 

regarding Medicare Part B reimbursement can be found by visiting 

the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services web site at www. 

cms.hhs.gov. 

A block with a truck in it indicates that this product 

is available through the Cardinal Health drop ship 

program. Please contact Cardinal Health home

place a drop ship order. 

2. I see an item is classified as “drop ship.” What does this mean? 

Cardinal Health prides itself on having a vast array of products 

available. Because there are so many items available, stock space 

in the distribution centers is reserved for items which have the 

highest demand. However, even though we may not keep an 

item in your distribution center, we may be able to order the item 

from the manufacturer as a drop ship order. Orders generally take 

3-5 business days and may have shipping and handling fees. For 

ordering information, or to inquire on the ability to drop ship an 

item, please give us a call. 

3. Could you give me a price on a wheelchair? 

Cardinal Health normally carries a standard size (18" x 16") or 

(20" x 16") in stock. Anything beyond a standard wheelchair is 

usually a drop ship order. The pricing varies dependant on customer 

needs. For example, is the patient requesting desk length arms or 

full length arms? Does the patient need swingaway footrests or 

elevating legrests? Are there other accessories the customer would 

like? For example, a pouch or oxygen tank holder. All these factors 

go into the price of a wheelchair. 

4. What is the difference between compression hosiery and 

anti-embolism stockings? 

TED stockings are normally for non-mobile patients. Doctors 

normally prescribe them for patients who are still in recovery or 

post-surgical treatment while still confined to bed. The common 

misconception is that TED stockings have an open toe. The opening 

of a TED stocking is actually an inspection toe or observation toe. 

This opening normally lies just above or below the toes. The toes 


are not meant to go through the hole of 

the TED stocking. TED stockings are not 

graduated and are the same compression 

level through the length of the garment. 

Graduated compression hosiery is designed 

for people who are active. The compression 

hosiery has more compression at the lower 

end of the garment, and decreases toward 

the upper end of the garment. For example, 

15 – 20 mmHg, will provide 20 mmHg 

around the ankle and decrease to 15 mmHg 

at the top. Compression hosiery does come 

in an open toe but normally aren’t available 

in the lower compressions. 

You can normally fit a customer for lower 

compression hosiery. For example, a 

8 – 15 mmHg or 15 – 20 mmHg, but it is 

highly suggested you receive a doctor’s 

prescription for high compressions. For 

example, 20 – 30 mmHg and 0 – 40 mmHg. 

5. I have a patient who requires 

compression stockings. How do I know 

which size to provide them?

demand product. In order to provide your patient with the correct 

hosiery, measurements need to be made. The style of hosiery 

prescribed will dictate the measurements required. Here are the 

measurements needed based on style and vendor: 

Futuro: 

• Knee High - Requires calf circumference measurement and length 

from the bend of the knee to the floor. 

• Thigh High and Pantyhose – Require height and weight of 

the patient. 

Jobst: 

• Knee High – Requires ankle and calf circumference measurement. 

• Thigh High – Requires ankle, calf and thigh circumference 

measurement. 

• Waist High – Requires ankle, calf, thigh, and hip circumference 

measurement. 

• Knee High 8 – 15 mmHg – Requires shoe size. 

TruForm: 

• Knee High and Thigh High (Classic Medical Line) – Requires an 

ankle and calf circumference and a length from either the bend of 

the knee to the floor or from the gluteal fold to the floor. 

• Pantyhose (Classic Medical Line) – Requires height and weight 

• Knee High - (Ladies’ Fashion Plus Line) – Requires ankle, calf 

circumference measurement.
