Dear Friends,
I’ve been at this business for 20 years now.
It has grown up right alongside my
three children, who are all now
adults. Just wait, new moms and dads
of precious little babies! They will grow and change right before
your very eyes, in a continual transformation that doesn’t end
for at least 18 years. And know that in your heart they will still
remain your “babies”--even if they do end up taller than you
are (my son towers over me!). Still delighting you, in different
ways; still inspiring feelings of wonderment and pride; still
existing within that bond of mutual love which you set into
motion from the beginning. Take time to enjoy each phase of
the journey, for no phase lasts long. Enjoy the unique talents
and ways of being that each child brings. There is a profound
sense of satisfaction I feel in having my children reach adulthood
as happy, centered and confident people who contribute
in a positive way to the world. And I know without a doubt that
the simple words my dad told me as to how to parent successfully
-- “Just love them!” -- is indeed the key. I have seen with my
own kids as well as others that the greatest influence in the long
run comes from you - your own love towards them, your respect
towards them, how you live your life - these can trump the many
questionable values you might worry about as I did, that are put
forth in today’s society.
Babyworks has grown up, too. The first catalog was a trifold
brochure - yes, an 8-1/2”x11” piece of paper folded into thirds,
containing a single set of products - Nikky Diaper Covers,
which I hoped I could entice people back to cloth diapers with.
The pen and ink drawings were done by a neighborhood mom.
There was no internet; it was real mail order. I worked from
home for the first 10 years, with a 7 year old and a new baby, and
then another baby two years later, and then an employee. We
grew at the speed of the tortoise, not the hare, as my number
one priority was my children, so there were many distractions.
My desire, my vision and my faith pulled me steadily forward,
through ups and downs and various learning curves - just as with
parenting!
This 20th year edition of our catalog is dedicated to
Adrienne. What an amazing employee, who has been
here off and on with great enthusiasm and dedication
since the business was in my home. And both before
and after getting her formal degree in photography, she
has always taken great pictures for us, many of which
appear in this catalog. I feel a deep sense of gratitude
for all that she has done.
Now our mission is to bring you a complete line of products
that are top quality and which support a healthy lifestyle for you
and your baby—and for the earth! We don’t
carry products because they “seem like a good idea” and
especially not because they are the latest gadget – we carry
products that have been tested and found top notch by a
majority of people, products which we hope will support and
enhance your parenting experience. We do our best to research
the working conditions and other particulars of products we
carry. While we’re mostly a mail order/internet/telephone business,
we do have retail hours here in Portland so you can
come in to shop. Our hours are always posted at
www.babyworks.com, in the About Us section. Currently, they
are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
• For a diaper-and-cover system,
we recommend 6 diaper covers
and 3 dozen prefolds, or 18-24
fitted diapers (or a combination
of both types) . You might also
like to have a few pocket diapers
or all-in-ones on hand, for
convenience, such as when
others are helping with the baby,
for times you get behind on
washing covers, or for outings .
• For a single-piece system like
pocket diapers or all-in-ones, we
recommend 18 .
• A 6-pack of diaper doublers, or
extra pocket diaper inserts
• Diaper Pail
• A Mini-Shower Diaper Sprayer,
Cloth Diapers:
They’re Easier Than Ever!
A note from Paula: “When I used cloth diapers with my first child, I used pins
and nylon pants; this was the only choice available. My decision was driven by
a concern for environmental issues, as well as concern about the additives in
commercial disposables, coupled by an overall feeling of distaste at the thought
of wrapping my precious baby girl in chemical-filled paper and plastic, and
then throwing the soil filled diaper into the trash can. Even though it was not
easy, to me it was the best alternative. At that time disposable diapers had taken
the market by storm due to “convenience”, and in our society convenience
is one of the ruling principles (along with a seeming disregard of where
products come from and where they are going). It would have been hard to
convince people to switch from disposables back to pins and nylon pants.
But then a good friend gave me some Nikky 100% cotton diaper covers as
a shower gift while pregnant with my second daughter, and I began using them
right away. Suddenly, diaper changes were so fast! Leakage was a thing of
the past. They were so soft to the touch. Just fold the diaper in thirds, lay it
inside the cover, and fasten the velcro tabs. A business idea was born.
THIS is something that could entice people back to cloth diapers! Babyworks
was started with this one product, and Nikkys remain our best selling diaper
cover--and have been, every single year. I wish I had kept a tally of the
countless thousands of customers we’ve successfully helped to use cloth diapers
since the beginning.
And now, there are even more choices. Pocket diapers (Bum Genius and Fuzzi
Bunz) have simplified things even further, and used along with a diaper sprayer
that attaches to the toilet, is easy enough for anyone accustomed to disposable
diapers to use; most end up greatly preferring them to paper. Bumkins All-in-
Ones are another fine choice, having been on the market for 18+ years - they’re
just like a disposable diaper made of reusable fabric. There are lots of other
options in covers and diapers, as well. It’s all about personal preference--what
you enjoy using, and what fits your baby. It may take some trial and error to
figure this out, or you might get it right immediately. Just know that with all the
choices available, there IS something that will be perfect for you and your baby.”
1) Place diaper which has been
folded in thirds lengthwise on
the diaper cover. If there is extra
length, fold it under in the front.
Fold side should be down.
2) Bring the
front panel
up to baby’s
waist.
Using a Diaper-
and-Cover System
A diaper cover will keep working through
several diaper changes, until it is soiled
or feels damp inside. If the diaper is just
wet, you can remove the wet diaper and
replace it with a clean diaper, reusing the
same cover. If it is soiled and some of the
soil is on the diaper cover, you will need to
replace both the diaper and the cover .
Depending on frequency of laundering,
we suggest 4 covers as the minimum to
have on hand, while 6 covers would be
most convenient, especially for a younger
baby . Some customers like to have
even more, for added convenience! The
number you need really depends on how
often your baby has bowel movements,
which is an individual thing, and which
tends to be more frequent in the first
6 weeks. Most babies will get several
months of use from each size; the
newborn size will be outgrown most
quickly . Buying newborn size covers
is worth the investment, unless your
newborn weighs 9 lbs. or more. Many
expectant parents who are unsure which
size to start with will get some newborn
and some small. If the newborn size is
kept in the package and not washed,
we have no problem taking them back
beyond the usual 30 days, in case the
small size works from the beginning .
Be sure you have enough diapers and
covers to get through at least 24 hours,
to give cloth diapers a reasonable try .
If you don’t have enough covers (like,
2 covers!) it will be too much trouble .
To use a rectangular prefold diaper with a velcro ® diaper cover:
3) Fasten velcro ® side tabs to
front panel. Be sure all edges
of the diaper are tucked inside.
It’s that simple!
(1) Are you careful to tuck the diaper completely
inside the cover, so moisture doesn’t wick out
into the clothing? This is the most common
cause of leakage .
(2) Is there leakage around the leg openings,
while the diaper and cover don’t seem very
wet? This is likely caused by the fit of the
diaper cover: the leg openings may be too
big for your baby’s legs.
• Sometimes people will buy diaper covers
overlarge, hoping for long use, but will
experience leakage due to a loose fit .
• Other times, the baby may have outgrown
the cover – is it too small or tight? Sometimes
at around 10 lbs ., the newborn sized covers
may appear to fit, but really don’t have
enough coverage for a baby this size .
• Some brands of covers, even good ones,
may not fit your baby well, and therefore will
allow leakage. Also, if you have a very slim
baby, you may need to adjust the size chart
downward .
(3) Is your baby wetting through everything, with
a totally saturated diaper, wet cover, and wet
clothing?
• Are you changing your baby often enough?
If you change the diaper only occasionally, it
Troubleshooting Leakage
With a good cloth diapering system, there should be almost no leakage. (In fact, even disposable diapers and “pull-ups”
are not leakproof. When using them overnight for our son on vacation, he wet through them each night – unlike our
reusable products at home.) I have heard many people say that they have had less leakage with cloth diapers than they had
with disposables. If you experience leakage on a regular basis, something is amiss; working through the list below should
solve your problem. Of course, if you need more specific advice about products you’ve purchased from us, just give us a call.
Tips on Choosing
Diaper Covers
• Different brands of diaper covers have
differing fits and sizing---just as with blue
jeans for adults. In the beginning, it’s a
good idea to try more than one brand
of cover. If you’re on the borderline of
two sizes, you might want to order one
of each. We can help with sizing choices
for the various brands if we know your
child’s weight and build.
may become so saturated that the wetness
has nowhere to go but out . Try changing
your baby more frequently .
• Diaper doublers are a great product for
buying more time between changes .
Pocket diaper users, add an extra insert, for
night time or during growth spurts/feeding
frenzies .
• If you are using unbleached or organic
diapers, be sure you have washed them
several times on hot water with nonchlorine
bleach before use, so they do
not repel moisture due to the natural
cotton wax remaining in the fabric .
Also:
• Be sure to follow washing instructions for
your particular diaper covers, so you
maintain their waterproof qualities .
• With cotton diaper covers, you will need to
change the diaper more promptly than you
will with synthetic or wool covers, as they
will become damp if left on too long .
• If you’re finding that the diaper becomes
saturated more quickly than you think is
reasonable, check the thickness of the
diaper . Some diapers have minimal
absorbency (including many store brands
• Consider your laundering habits. If
you choose breathable or natural fiber
covers, these require gentle laundering
to remain waterproof and functional . For
many people, this is a worthwhile tradeoff;
for others, it’s unrealistic.
• We may be biased, but think at some
point you should try a Nikky – whether
natural fiber or heavy duty poly, just
because we think they still set the
standard in diaper covers!
Call toll free 800-422-2910 or visit www.babyworks.com
of gauze and birdseye), and you may need
to use two or three of them, together with
a doubler overnight, for enough
absorbency . You will find our diapers to be
far more absorbent than the average storebought
diaper!
• If you nurse at night, you should ideally
plan to change your baby, as well .
Changing your baby when he or she first
starts to stir, before nursing, is least
disruptive to you and to your baby .
Keeping a diaper ready to go next to your
baby’s sleeping area will make this less of
a bother, and you can do it with one eye
closed .
• HOWEVER – if you want to try going all
night without a change, you might have
luck with the following: a pocket diaper
with 2 or even 3 inserts; a pull-on cover
with an organic fitted diaper and a hemp
fleece doubler; a hemp diaper with a
doubler inside your regular cover; or a
Dappi pull-on pant on
top of your regular
velcro cover, diaper
and diaper doubler, or
pocket diaper .
Best Tip for Success
Sounds so simple, but: If whatever you are
using isn’t working for you, for whatever
reason--try something else! There are so
many options you’re bound to find one
that does work. And don’t ever give up
without trying a pocket diaper (Fuzzi Bunz
or Bum Genius). Many feel that these are
the easiest possible diapers to use .
Diaper Covers
Our Best Selling Diaper Covers for 20 years
Nikky, a Japanese company which has been making baby pants for over 70 years,
first invented velcro ® -closing diaper covers nearly three decades ago, creating
the first major breakthrough in convenient cloth diapering. They are sold
worldwide, and are still considered to be one of the very finest diaper covers
available. Japan has stricter standards than the U.S. as to chemicals that can be
used on baby garments; Nikkys have always been vinyl, PVC and pthalate free. Of
all the diaper covers, many people feel that Nikkys are less “plasticky”. All of the
Nikkys feature a soft, non-binding fit, secure velcro ® , excellent leak prevention,
and durability. Nikky pioneered the stretchable inner leg gusset, to keep soil
away from the clothes. They work well with prefolds or contour diapers but are
too trim for fitteds.
Newborn Nikky Which type of Nikky is best for you? Natural fiber
covers, while not “totally waterproof”, are very effective
at keeping the moisture inside if changed promptly, and
are the top choice for people who prefer natural fiber
products and don’t mind their more gentle laundering
requirements. They are also breathable, allowing air to
Newborn sized Nikkys and pass through the fabric.
Nijis have a dip in front to
allow for cord healing.
Poly Nikkys, because they are nonabsorbent, are the most
waterproof, and dry very quickly after laundering. These appeal to people for
whom ease of care and longer time between changes is most important. Many
people use more than one type of Nikky; we encourage you to experiment to see
which you like best.
Nikky & Niji Size Chart
• Nikkys run true to size to slightly large. Customers
with very slim babies may wish to order down one size.
Ordering too big may cause leakage due to a loose fit.
• All the Nikkys except wool are very stretchable, and
often fit beyond the size chart.
• Nijis are not available in Size 3.
They’re lightweight
through the fabric, some air circulation occurs
from around the edges . (Japan)
Diaper Covers
These diaper covers from Japan are made of the same fabrics as Nikkys,
and have many of the same features, like stretchable inner leg gussets.
The fit is different - wider in the seat, higher on the rise, somewhat lower
on the legs. The newborn size Niji seems to fit skinny-legged babies
better than the Nikkys; beyond that, we’re not exactly sure why one brand
fits some babies better than the other. They are roomy enough to use over
fitted diapers, especially past the newborn size.
100% Cotton Nijis
These Nijis are made of soft, double-layered 100% cotton knit
which has been waterproofed in a non-toxic way that leaves the fabric
These popular, medium-weight covers are industrial strength, and are
available with either strong Aplix ® closures or snaps . (The snaps are less
adjustable, but a good choice if you wash them with other things or don’t
like sticky closures.) Made of soft, heavy duty polyester, with waterproof
laminate inside. These work well with prefolds OR fitted diapers. In spite
of having no leg gussets, we don’t hear complaints of leakage. Available in
white or two cute unisex prints. Machine washable and dryable, warm or
hot . (Canada)
Washing Velcro ® Diaper Covers
• When machine washing and drying velcro ® covers, turn them inside
out and fasten the velcro ® to protect it. Use gentle cycles, low
temperatures and mild detergents (not soaps). Avoid fabric softener,
which will coat them and could permanently destroy their waterproof
properties . Wash them separately; washing with clothing or
diapers will cause the velcro ® to become linted and less sticky,
and the high temperatures may wear your diaper covers out
prematurely.
• If you hand wash your covers, use mild laundry detergent, or wool
wash for wool covers, but not dishwashing liquid, hand soap, bar
soap, or anything else . Do not use a scrub brush or anything other
than a gentle touch!
• Wool diaper covers should not be machine dried.
• Never use chlorine bleach! It will destroy your covers.
Stain Prevention for Diaper Covers
• To prevent staining, rinse soil from the diaper cover (nothing beats
a utility sink or toilet sprayer for this). It really helps to presoak soiled
covers in a bucket of water with a bit of mild detergent added (1 tsp .)
until several accumulate for laundering .
(We do not recommend soaking diaper covers in BacOut,
non-chlorine bleach, Oxy-Clean ® , vinegar or anything else.)
• If diaper covers become discolored, try an occasional wash cycle with a
little non-chlorine bleach to brighten them up . You can spot-treat stains
on the leg gussets with a paste made of non-chlorine bleach and water,
left on for several hours before washing. (Use of non-chlorine bleach on
wool products is not recommended; apply Eucalan Wool Wash full
strength to stained areas, and let sit before laundering .)
• It is normal for soil to get on the diaper covers occasionally, as
their function is to prevent the dreaded “blowouts” onto the clothing .
Fitted diapers will reduce soil on the covers. If you have a frequent
pooper, be sure you have enough diaper covers – at least six or eight –
to make laundry more manageable .
This is the best truly inexpensive velcro ® -closing diaper cover we’ve
found in terms of value, fit, waterproofness and durability. It is made of a
lightweight poly fabric outside, with an absolutely waterproof inner lining
of polyurethane (actually, a soft, smooth material) . They are medium
weight and stretchy, and launder well (gentle washing with mild detergent
recommended; machine dryable, low) . They also have a snap on each
side to prevent baby from pulling them open, and to keep them holding
tight in the outer position as your baby grows. Available in white or pastel
farm animal print. They will work with any type of diaper. (Hong Kong)
These very lightweight, waterproof, trim-fitting
covers are made of the same durable fabric
Bumkins uses for their bibs, in eye-catching prints or solid white . The
custom made Aplix® closures are the strongest we’ve seen. Their unique
features include a “leak shield pouch” inside the front to hold the diaper
in place and prevent moisture from wicking upwards, and a mesh venting
system at the back to allow airflow . (For this reason, Bumkins may not
be the best night time cover, as moisture from an extremely wet diaper
All About
Diapers
A diaper is the absorbent cotton lining
that goes inside a diaper cover. This can
be a rectangular prefold diaper, a fitted
diaper, or a contour diaper. (You will
learn about all three types in the pages
ahead.) If you use a diaper service, you
will most likely receive prefolds similar
to our Chinese diapers. If using diapers
from a service, be sure they deliver the
correct size (no kidding, mistakes
happen) – some have a premie size
diaper upon request. Our diapers are all
good, absorbent diapers - more
expensive but far more absorbent than
the average store bought diapers of
flimsy poly-filled gauze or thin, unlined
birdseye fabrics. Personal preferences
such as cost, fabric, style and country of
origin drive peoples’ choices. You can
order samples of our individual diapers
to see which you prefer before making
an investment in several dozen. Tip:
Buy newborn sized diapers for your
newborn under 13 lbs. Trying to
use standard size diapers will cause
excessive bulk and frustration, and
they won’t fit well in newborn or small
sized covers.
About Unbleached &
Organic Diapers
Unbleached diapers may require several
washings before they reach their full
absorbency . This is because during the
weaving process, cotton fibers emit a waxy
substance, which actually repels moisture .
In the bleaching process, this substance is
removed. We recommend washing them at
a HOT temperature, with a heavy duty
detergent and oxygen bleach (such as Bi-
O-Kleen Premium Laundry powder, or Tide
with Bleach, or any non-chlorine bleach
added to your regular detergent) to speed
up this process .
Washing Diapers at Home
Most people cannot imagine what it would be like to wash cloth diapers! I was in that
position at one time, until I watched a friend do it and saw that it was not much
different than doing other types of laundry. I also saved a lot of money over my diaper
service. Following is the method that several of us at Babyworks have used to wash
diapers, that gave us clean diapers and virtually rash free babies. Our experience led us
to believe that presoaking the diapers was more sanitary, was better smelling, and
produced cleaner diapers than not presoaking. HOWEVER, many customers these days
would prefer not to soak their diapers. If you don’t soak, our best tips for success are:
wash them every other day (never go longer than 3 days); use a diaper sprayer to spray
off wet AND soiled diapers, to reduce odor and staining; pretreat soiled areas with
spray Bac Out. If you have a top loader, you can presoak the diapers overnight in your
machine with Bac Out or non-chlorine bleach. These instructions can apply to all
but pocket diapers, which have their own, unique washing instructions (read more
on page 15).
(1) SOAKING: Add water to your pail and add either some non-chlorine bleach or
Bi-O-Kleen Bac-Out as a presoaking agent (the quantity will depend on the size of your pail, ranging
from 2 Tbs to 1/3 cup, in most cases) . Diapers should be submerged; add more water as
necessary . (People with front loaders can line their pail with a mesh laundry bag, then lift it into
the machine, washing the diapers right inside the bag, or or can use a diaper sprayer and skip
presoaking altogether.)
(2) Wet diapers go directly into the pail; soiled diapers should be rinsed first (one of us used the
Diaper Duck, another did it the old fashioned way by hand with rubber gloves, others used the
diaper sprayer). Wash your diapers at least 2-3 times per week, to keep things sanitary.
(3) WASHING: Dump the contents of the pail into the washing machine and run a spin cycle just
long enough to remove the dirty liquid (30-45 seconds) . You can run a pre-wash cycle with nonchlorine
bleach added for extra cleaning, if you wish .
(4) Add detergent and non-chlorine bleach, if your detergent does not already contain it. Wash with
HOT water at HIGH water level and LONG cycle (at least 10 minutes), on Normal or Heavy Duty
setting . (If you use warm water or gentle detergent without non-chlorine bleach, your
diapers may not get clean enough which could cause diaper rash.) An ultra-hot, “sanitizing”
cycle may be okay for 100% cotton diapers but avoid it with all-in-ones or pocket diapers .
(5) Rinse twice (cold water is fine) . Check the rinse water to be sure it is clear; soap residue can
be irritating . You can add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of cheap white vinegar to the final wash to prevent
ammonia buildup and restore pH.
(6) DRYING: Dry on high heat, or in the sun . The sun is a great, natural “bleach” and sterilizer .
Most parents keep their pails in the bathroom, where diapers can
easily be sprayed or rinsed off and tossed into it. If you have a
heavier, soaking pail near the washing machine, you can buy a
smaller pail to keep in the bedroom, changing area, etc., and
transport the diapers to the other pail periodically.
NOTE: We strongly advise against using chlorine bleach on your diapers. It will
eventually damage the cotton fibers and cause the diapers to wear out much more
quickly. Strangely enough, washing non-soaked diapers less than twice a week can
have the same effect.
PREFOLD DIAPERS
Chinese Diapers
100% Chinese cotton twill is uniquely long wearing and durable,
and for this reason is the preferred diaper of better diaper
services . “Chinese Diaper” has become a catch phrase, and some
diapers from Pakistan, India and other places in the world are
loosely called Chinese diapers – even though they aren’t really
the same . Chinese diapers are the most economical prefold
choice. They “quilt” as they’re laundered, making them very
absorbent . (Before laundering, they’ll look thin and flat,
like linen napkins.) In the absence of chlorine bleach, they’ll
often last for years . People have told us that our Chinese diapers
are softer than many; this is because our supplier buys higher
quality, softer yarn than the norm. In addition, he has worked with
the same factory and mill for over a decade and his partner lives
there; therefore he is aware of the working conditions (which he
says are good) and the textile source . You can choose 6 or 8 ply
diapers. Most people choose 8 ply infant, which will usually last
9 months or more in a velcro cover; 6 ply will be less bulky, but
less absorbent. In the standard size, consider the 8 ply to be a
super-soaker toddler size. It may be too thick for a child under 20
lbs . or a petite child . You can buy samples to see which is right
for your baby . Our white diapers are bleached with approximately
90% peroxide, 10% chlorine .
Traditional Birdseye or Flannel Prefolds
These two classic diapers offer a less bulky alternative to the Chinese diapers, in addition to being
home-made in the U.S.A. Each has an inner center panel of 100% cotton terry, for maximum
absorbency . Choose unbleached flannel, which is thick and soft; or birdseye (a soft, woven fabric;
the small, diamond shaped pattern on the weave gives it it’s name). The newborn size should last
about 3 months; the standard size, for 2 or more years. Approximate dimensions after laundering:
12”x14” newborn; 13”x17” standard .
Ultra-Absorbent
Hemp Prefolds
These unique diapers have a soft and fuzzy
feel, and are made of 55% hemp, 45%
cotton . Our supplier notes that hemp fibers
are 1/2 again as absorbent as cotton, and
more durable for long life . This means more
absorbency for the same amount of thickness;
in fact, these are probably the most
absorbent prefolds available. Hemp is
generally considered to be naturally organic, as
it is a tough fiber grown in areas inhospitable to
pests . The infant size can be used for at least
9 months and some customers report using
them well into the first year (the flip side is
that they may be too big for a small newborn) .
Oversized to allow for up to 25% shrinkage .
Follow washing instructions for unbleached
diapers before use . Dimensions given are after
laundering. (U.S.A.)
Contour
Diaper
Contour diapers are
shaped to allow them
to lay inside a velcro
diaper cover without
folding. Historically,
contour diapers have
not been an absorbent
choice, because they
have less fabric overall. However, Kissaluvs
hit the mark by making the diapers of their
trademark, soft and absorbent cotton sherpa
(contains 10% poly for strength), and then
sewing a doubler right to the center . Not only
do these fit neatly into a velcro cover, they also
have long enough side wings to be pinnable .
People looking for a trimmer yet absorbent
diaper will really appreciate these! (U.S.A.)
FITTED DIAPERS
Many people are taken with the soft feel of these luxurious diapers! Closing either with snaps or with Aplix ® , they offer full
coverage and elastic at the legs for another layer of leak protection. (Some customers comment that the leg elastic helps
keep poop off the diaper covers.) Use a fuller-fitting cover over these - velcro, snap or pull on - because Nikkys are
trim fitting, they wouldn’t be the best choice here.
Picture a disposable diaper and the way you would put it
on, in one unit – then picture it made out of comfortable,
reusable real fabric, instead of plastic and paper . This is
what a Bumkin all-in-one is like – it velcros on in seconds, then when wet or soiled, the
entire unit is put into the diaper pail and swapped for a new one. Couldn’t be easier! Soil
is easily managed with a diaper sprayer or flushable liners. We think these all-in-ones are
some of the best, and have carried them for over 17 years . Some people use them as
an exclusive system, some to supplement their regular system . The silky soft waterproof
shell stays soft without breaking down in the wash . The inner lining contains 6 layers of
cotton flannel, sewn with an airflow design for easy washing and drying . Use a diaper
doubler for naps or night time, or any time, to approximate the absorbency of
a pocket diaper. They are PVC, Phthalate and vinyl free. Choose white or colorful prints.
Sizing Note: These run big . The Small size is more like 8+ lbs to 14
security. Machine wash warm; tumble dry low. (Canada)
ALL-IN-ONES
NEW! Bumkins has made some recent improvements:
The tabs have been redesigned so you can cross them over
for a tighter fit at the waist. They now have leg gussets,
to minimize leakage. And the placement of the velcro has
been improved to prevent any chance of chafing.
Note: You don’t actually put a diaper into a swimsuit diaper.
If you did, it would quickly become waterlogged! Instead, it is
simply a protective shell; any mess your baby makes is discarded
once they’re out of the water. Swim diapers contain solids; may
not contain urine (nothing really does).
POCKET DIAPERS
Pocket Diapers are the latest creation in convenient cloth diapering, and may be the
easiest system ever. These involve slipping a superabsorbent microterry insert into a
pouch in the center, leaving dry-feeling fleece next to baby’s skin. Disposable diaper users
have been won over by their trim fit, dry feel, easy care (no soaking; soil shakes off the
fleece), and easy use (no folding) that virtually anyone can manage. When the baby soils
or wets, the entire unit is changed. Some people use them as an exclusive system (for this,
the most popular number is 18); others use them as a night time system for their great
absorbency, when used with 2 or even 3 inserts. A diaper sprayer makes this system very
simple. We offer two excellent brands; you may wish to try each to see which you prefer.
Both are machine washable on hot, with low temperature drying. Avoid diaper creams,
which could damage the fleece. While they might seem to be an expensive and luxurious
system, they are surprisingly cost effective over time.
Bum Genius is another excellent pocket diaper. It comes in just one cleverly-designed size, which
shorten its length for the smaller positions . They close with super-stretchy, adjustable velcro tabs, and
have a cover over the insert pocket for additional leak prevention. Elastic at the legs is very stretchy,
as well. Available in white or several attractive pastel colors. Comes with two inserts: one newborn
DIAPERING ACCESSORIES
Diaper Doublers, Liners & Pocket Inserts
Diaper doublers add extra absorbency to your cloth diapering system, without excessive bulk. These
will come in handy, especially for an older baby or for longer periods of time without changes. (Doublers
are cloth diapering’s answer to the polyacrylate chemical gel found in most disposables, including “natural” disposables.) Just lay
one over the center of any cotton diaper or night pant; use pocket insert inside of pocket diapers.
Cotton-Terry
Diaper Doublers
Our original doublers are custom made of thick,
triple-layered 100% cotton terry with a single layer
of cotton flannel backing. Available in white or
unbleached cotton. (U.S.A.)
Item #: DBLU (unbleached); DBLW (white)
Size/Price: Standard (approx. 5”x11”)
$3.00 ea. ($18.00/6)
POCKET DIAPER INSERTS
Most pocket diaper users like to have extra inserts once their baby gets older, to add
extra absorbency. (That is, you would stuff 2, or in extreme overnight cases, 3, inserts
in the pocket.) Choose either microterry (synthetic) inserts or hemp/cotton. Absorbency
should be similar between the two types; some people like to use one of each.
Microterry Inserts
These are the same standard sized inserts which
come with the Bum Genius diapers, and work with
other brands of pocket diapers, as well. Recently
upgraded to 15 oz . in absorbency, they are 16”
long, and have snaps to fold over and adjust the
length, down to 12”, depending on the size/position
of your pocket diaper . (China)
Hemp Cotton Inserts
Designed to fit inside each size of the Fuzzi Bunz, these offer a more
natural alternative to the microterry inserts. Hourglass shaped, they
are 55% hemp for absorbency, combined with 45% unbleached
cotton for softness. (U.S.A.)
Hemp & Fleece
Stay Dry Doublers
These luxurious, best-selling doublers are made of 3 layers of absorbent,
trim fitting hemp & cotton fleece (55% hemp, 45% cotton), with an
additional layer of Malden Mills virgin poly fleece on one side. The poly
fleece layer next to baby’s skin stays dry, while wetness
travels to the lower layers. Approx. 5” x 11”. (U.S.A.)
Feel-Dry Fleece Liners
Unlike doublers, these have no absorbency, but rather are a single layer
of lightweight fleece that can be used with any diaper (and even over a
doubler) for those parents and babies who want that dry
feeling. Moisture wicks through the fabric into the diaper
below, keeping the layer next to baby soft and dry . Ours
are made of quality Malden Mills virgin poly fleece, and
are cream colored. Approx. 5” x 12”. (U.S.A.)
Price: $8.00/6 pack; $1.35 for 1 (sample)
About Wetness
We’ve found no reason to believe that wetness itself irritates the skin or causes
discomfort to the vast majority of babies . (Of course, this assumes that diapers
are changed in a reasonable time period!) However, there are some babies,
usually older babies, who do not like to feel wet at night. In these cases, fleece
liners, hemp fleece doublers or fleece-lined pocket diapers would be good
solutions . Fleece liners are also excellent when wetness must stay away from
the skin, such as with yeast infection or surgery .
Dealing with soiled diapers is the main thing that scares people away from cloth diapers – yet, you cannot escape
dealing with poop no matter what type of diaper you use! Even with disposables, you still have to clean your baby up
when changing him or her, and that’s the messiest part. With cloth you must simply get the soil from the diaper
into the toilet, where it belongs. When you think about it, throwing untreated human waste (“raw sewage”) wrapped
in paper and plastic into the garbage can and then the landfill is probably not the most desirable way to dispose of
it! Here are several popular options for making cloth clean-ups much easier. You may want to use one or all of
them--or none, if you’re not squeamish. (Some people use low tech items like rubber gloves.)
Diaper Duck
This innovative, inexpensive tool allows you to rinse and wring prefold
style diapers without getting your hands wet. We loved it! Many people
ask us how it works: Using an overhand grip, squeeze the Diaper Duck to
open, then let go to clamp onto the diaper, near
the clean end (as in the photo) . Swoosh the
diaper in the toilet while holding onto the Diaper
Duck, then using the same overhand grip with
one hand, use the other hand to pull the diaper
back through to wring . Comes with suction cup
for convenient storage on the side of the tank .
Made of durable Lexan plastic, the manufacturer
offers a 1-year warranty. May not be effective with
low flush toilets. (U.S.A.)
Making Clean Ups Easier
Mini Shower ® Diaper Sprayer
The Mini-Shower ® is a much loved product for one good reason – it makes removing soil from diapers and diaper covers easy! This model has received
consistently high marks from customers and has many great features: adjustable spray pressure, on-off button on the handle; shut-off valve at the base;
a super flexible clear hose; and neat storage on the side of the tank. Many people keep their diaper pail next to the toilet, where it’s an easy matter to
toss the diaper after rinsing. Some people who don’t presoak diapers use it to rinse wet diapers, also, to reduce odor in the pail. The Mini-Shower will
work with all types of diapers, from Fuzzi Bunz to fitteds, all-in-ones to prefolds, and
all types of diaper covers. It attaches easily to the flexible water supply hose that goes
from the wall to your tank (if you have an older metal supply hose, you will have to
buy a flexible hose at a hardware store, usually under $10.00). Highly recommended.
Flushable Diaper Liners
Designed to make diaper clean-ups easier, these flushable diaper liners
are an alternative method for dealing with any type of diaper. While some
people use them at each change, others use them for convenience on
trips away from home. A liner is laid in the center of the diaper, then
removed and flushed or discarded when the diaper is changed . (The
manufacturer does not recommend
them for septic tanks .) They come
measuring 4 1/2” x 13 1/2” inch .
Deluxe Diaper Pail
It is difficult to find a good diaper pail, let alone one that has a handle
strong enough to bear the weight of a full load of diapers and soaking
liquid without bending or pulling off. (In fact, if you buy any pail at the
store, we’d suggest you test it outdoors for this purpose before bringing it
in, as we do for pails that we test . This will save potential messy indoor
accidents, if it doesn’t work out.) The off-white colored outer pail is metal,
and has a foot pedal to open the lid. Inside
is a white plastic bucket with a secure
handle . The pail is designed with a tight,
odor-blocking seal . The capacity is 5 .3
gallons, enough to hold up to 2 dozen
diapers . Cylindrical in shape, it stands 17-
1/2” tall with a diameter of 12”. PLEASE
NOTE – THIS PAIL IS NOT LOCKING. You
may secure it with a product such as an
above and below the lid with Velcro ® . 10year
DIAPERING ACCESSORIES
Economy Diaper Pail
There are some bright and creative people working here at Babyworks!
Beth and her husband discovered that this pail, originally designed as a
secure, airtight receptacle for biological waste, happened to make an
effective diaper pail . There is nothing fancy about this pail -- it is utilitarian
-- and it does not have a foot pedal, which some would miss. It also
requires two hands to unlock it .
However, it is childproof, pet proof,
odor proof and spill proof, with a
securely locking lid, and is sturdy
enough to carry a load of diapers
across the house . One of our testers
who takes her diapers to the
laundromat had it tip over in the back
of her car, and was relieved that
nothing leaked! Plastic, 6 .5 gallons,
20” tall and 12” wide . Because the lid
screws on, a diaper pail liner will not
work with this pail. (U.S.A.)
Diaper Pail Liner
Many people who don’t soak their diapers like to use a liner in their pail
(which is like a large, stretchy stuff sack). When the diapers are dumped
into the machine, the pail liner is put in and washed along with them . This
one is made of a soft, waterproof material, and features an elasticized
top for a secure fit around the pail. A unique feature is the snaps at the
top, so that it can be used as a “hanging diaper pail” when attached to a
door handle (a convenient option if your pail is in another room; also for
pocket diapers, which do not have to be soaked). It comes with a sachet
of microterry sewn in to drop your favorite essential oil on to if you want
to for odor prevention (many people like Tea Tree oil) . 21” tall
by 17” wide . This liner will work with our deluxe diaper pail .
Safe & Effective
Laundry & Household Products
Biokleen offers a complete line of products that, unlike
many natural products, actually are as effective as their
conventional, more toxic counterparts. They are nonpolluting
and concentrated (no fillers or harmful “inert
ingredients”), for least waste and greatest economy. We’ve
sold them for many years to countless satisfied customers,
and use them ourselves. Locally made in Vancouver,
Washington. Please note that there is some inaccurate information on
some internet sites stating that Biokleen laundry products contain citrus oil
which will coat your diapers or clothing. Biokleen says in fact it is a water
soluble citrus extract which easily and completely rinses out (and we have not
heard any such complaint from customers).
Laundry Liquid - Now in Two Formulas
Biokleen All Temperature Laundry Liquid is tough on dirt, grease, stains and odors, yet is gentle
enough for delicate fabrics and hand washables, and leaves clothing feeling soft. It is phosphate and
chlorine free. Rinses clean without leaving residue on clothes that can irritate skin or ruin fabrics. For
washing diapers, we recommend adding non-chlorine bleach, for maximum cleaning and whitening
effect. Laundry Liquid is now available in two formulas: Original All Temperature Citrus (containing
grapefruit seed & orange peel extracts), or Free’N’Clear (no citrus or fragrance). Highly concentrated
for economy. Safe for High Efficiency.
Oxygen Bleach Plus. It brightens whites and colors alike with natural fabric and water conditioners
and detergent boosters . Contains no chemical activators or optical brighteners, metasilicates, borax or
caustics . Great for use presoaking cotton diapers (add about 1/4 cup to soaking liquid in your pail),
or added to the wash cycle when doing tough loads of “whites”. When combined with water, you
can make a paste that is a great spot treatment for diaper covers and other items .
Bac-Out Stain & Odor Eliminator
This is one of our most popular products, and useful for many things. Made of a unique
combination of natural live aerobic and anaerobic enzyme cultures with botanical extracts, it is safe
and effective for many stain and odor problems. If you’re worried about smelly diaper pails, this
one’s for you! (For a diaper pail soak, add 2 TBS to 1/3 cup or more depending on the size of
your pail.) It can be used as a stain pretreatment on diapers or clothing, and it is a fabulous
stain remover for carpets and upholstery . Because of the enzymes, we do not recommend it for
presoaking diaper covers, as it could affect the waterproofing .
Snugglewool Blanket
A Lambskin Alternative
Soft, shorn merino lambswool is knitted
100% Wool Puddle Pad &
Mattress Protector
Tightly woven, 100% wool felt provides a natural,
water repellent yet breathable barrier for wetness .
rubberized pads or plastic sheets can. Amazingly
enough, water put on the pad will bead up and
remain for hours until it is finally absorbed! This
pad is designed to be used under a sheet or
blanket, rather than for the baby to lie directly on
it. A unique find, and one of our most popular
products. Warm water rinse, air dry. Natural ivory color. The manufacturer
states that there are no chemical treatments used
in the processing of the wool used in these
puddle pads. (Australia)
There is much to be concerned about
with plastic water bottles, both in terms of the
enormous waste problem they are creating
when discarded, and in terms of concerns
about the chemicals in the plastic leaching into
the water, particularly when they are reused .
Klean Kanteens provide a safe alternative for
all family members .
Stainless steel is a very sturdy, non-leaching
material that has many advantages. It keeps
water fresh tasting and odor free, and keeps
it cold for a period of time . These are made
of a single layer of #304 stainless, with no
lining that could delaminate . Choose screw top
or sport top (shown in photo) for the larger
bottles; you can also purchase a shoulder strap
to carry these . The infant sippy cup comes with
2 safe, non-leaching polypropylene spouts . Best
of all, the sippy top is interchangeable with a
regular top, for many years of use . (China)
All Night Pants
There are many children beyond toilet training who still wet at night,
or need heavier protection at times during the day . These pants pull
on like regular underpants, and have an all cotton center padding that
holds approximately 1 cup of liquid (enough absorbency to keep the
sheets dry for most kids) . The outer shell is made of water repellent
poly . Stretchable inner leg cuffs help protect against leakage . There
is a layer of stay dry poly mesh next to the skin. Many older children
are sensitive about wearing diapers, and these are a welcome change. They’re a discreet (no
paper rustling sounds), much more economical and environmentally sound alternative to pull-on
disposable night time products . For heavy wetters, we recommend using a Diaper Doubler
inside (see page 16). (Japan)
CARE: Machine wash and dry on gentle cycle. Being thickly padded, they do take awhile to
dry; we dry ours inside out.
Modified Guarantee: Due to the high cost of the
All Night Pants, we can only accept one used
night pant back for return per customer. If you
order several, be sure to try just one first . Thanks
for your understanding and support of this policy .
Care Tips for Training and Night Pants
We highly recommend presoaking the pants (in a bucket of water with a bit of mild
detergent added) if you can’t wash them right away. This will prevent ammonia buildup,
What is the Cost Difference Between Cloth & Disposable Diapers?
To us, product cost is one of the least
important variables in the choice
between disposables and cloth; even if
disposables were .05 each, we’d still
choose cloth, for the environmental,
comfort and health benefits. Still, many
people inquire, so we’ve attempted to do
a general ballpark comparison.
There are many factors to take into account in
comparing cloth and disposable diapers. In the
cloth diapering world, there is a substantial
price variance between different diapering
systems, and your choice will depend on your
budget and personal preferences. It is similar
with disposable diapers: you can buy the gel
free brand Tushies tm , or the standard brands,
or the less-expensive generic warehouse club
brands . Following are comparisons of a couple
of different scenarios in each category . You
can do more precise calculations based on the
products you wish to order, using our quantities
as general guidelines . Our calculations are
based on 2 1 ⁄2 years of diapering .
Your actual cost will vary based on
prices paid (prices quoted are subject to
change), quantities used, and length of
time used; also, additional accessories
purchased.
When we washed our own diapers, we didn’t
notice much impact on our utility bills. We
are factoring in $15 per month in utility and
laundry product costs .
There are a couple of important points
to note:
(1) With the investment in cloth diapering
products, your cost remains the same, no
matter how many times a day you change
your baby. With disposables, your costs
escalate if your baby is changed beyond
the numbers listed.
(2) Many people reuse their cloth diapering
products for more than one child. This will
1) Bum Genius Pocket Diapers
24 ea . at $16 .95 each, plus 12 additional
inserts for night time at $3 .00 each . $442 .80
for cost of product . (You can reduce this cost
with fewer pocket diapers; minimum number
recommended is 18 .) Surprisingly cost effective!
Laundering Costs: $450 .00
TOTAL COST PER MONTH: $29.76
TOTAL OVERALL: Approx. $892.80
2) Breathable Poly Nikkys and
Chinese Diapers
Diaper covers: 6 covers each, in Newborn,
Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large and Super
Large (at $87 per size) . These would last the
average baby at least 30 months . Total cost for
covers: $522 .00 (of course, this cost can be
reduced by using fewer diaper covers per
size, especially in the larger sizes).
Diapers: Chinese Prefolds, 3 dozen infant
diapers ($66), and 3 dozen regular diapers
($84 .00) . Total Cost of Diapers: $150 .00
Laundering Costs: $450 .00
TOTAL COST PER MONTH: $37.40
TOTAL OVERALL: Approx. $1,122.00
If you substitute less expensive covers
like Bummis, only 3 sizes needed for most
babies ($207.00 for covers), your cost with
diapers would drop to approx. $26.90/month
(or $807.00 overall).
3) Bumkins All in Ones
18 ea., white, Sizes Small, Medium, and Large.
These would last the average baby at least
30 months . ($837 .00) along with a set of
diaper doublers for nap and night time (about
$21 .00) .
Laundering Costs: $450 .00
TOTAL COST PER MONTH: $43.60
TOTAL OVERALL: Approx. $1,308.00
4) Disposable Diapers
A) Tushies tm Gel and Chemical Free @
TOTAL COST PER MONTH: $134.42
TOTAL OVERALL: Approx. $4,000.00
B) Huggies UltraTrim Diapers (basic
disposables with superabsorbent chemical
additives) @ $13 .99 bulk pack of 84 small, 72
medium, or 60 large . Smaller packs increase
costs .
$53 .54/month x 3 = $160 .62
TOTAL COST PER MONTH: $64.25
5) G Diapers ®
(reusable covers with
Toll Free (800) 422-2910
Our regular telephone hours are Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Pacific
Standard Time. If you reach our voice mail during these hours, we
are assisting other customers and will return your call promptly. Retail
shopping hours are listed on the back of the catalog .
Shipping Information
Items in stock usually ship immediately, often the same day. If your order
has an item on backorder and it is expected in a few days, we may wait
and ship the entire order together, depending on weight. We use USPS or
UPS for shipping, depending on weight and package destination.
Shipping Charges For Continental U.S.A.
Up to $15.00 $4.50
$15.01 – 55.00 $6.50
$55.01+ $8.50
Alaska and Hawaii, PO Boxes and APO – we usually ship Priority Mail.
This means we might get back to you to adjust shipping rates if needed
for orders over 2 lbs, as our costs can radically go up. We’ve become
good friends with Flat Rate Priority boxes, large and small, and use these
for economy as much as possible. We can also use Parcel Post, at your
option, but this can take well over a month to Alaska or Hawaii.
Please be careful with your shipping address! Packages that do
not make their destination or are returned to us due to an incorrect
address given will incur shipping charges again to reship them.
Ditto on packages returned to us because notices left by the USPS or UPS
are ignored. And if you cannot get U.S. Mail at your address, please be sure
we have both your U.S. Mail Address and a UPS-able address. Of course,
if we make a mistake on your order, it will be on us to fix it.
Our Return & Exchange Policy
RETURN POLICY
We choose our products carefully and stand behind them with one
of the best return policies in the business! You may return most
of our products for any reason within 30 days of the purchase
date (or ship date on backordered items) for refund or
exchange, less shipping charges. This includes items which have
been washed or used. See exceptions below. Sorry, we cannot
accept out-of-package (unless purchased that way), washed or used
items beyond 30 days. Items in brand new, resaleable condition can
be taken back beyond 30 days for up to 60 days for store credit .
You may wish to insure your package or use delivery confirmation
for your own peace of mind . If coupons or discounts were
used for the purchase, these amounts will be proportionally
deducted from your refund.
EXCEPTIONS TO THE RETURN POLICY
All Night Pants: due to their high cost, we can only accept one used
pant back . Items you receive as a gift can be returned for store
credit only, or exchange . Sale items (new) may be returned for 14
days . Items purchased from the resale bins in our store are not
returnable .
A NOTE ABOUT REFUSED SHIPMENTS
If you refuse a package from UPS as a way of returning it to us, we
will have to not only charge you the original shipping charge from
us, but also charge you for UPS’ actual fee to return the package to
us, which can be substantially higher . (Yes, we incur two shipping
charges by UPS when this happens.)
EXCHANGE POLICY
• Items in new condition can be exchanged for up 60 days (if it’s
been longer, give us a call); used items for up to 30 days from
purchase date . You pay the shipping to send items back to us .
• We will pay the shipping charges to send you replacement
diaper covers, night pants and training pants, or other very
lightweight items such as clothing, in similar quantities to what
you are exchanging. Beyond that, our usual shipping charges
would apply for the new merchandise we’re sending to you.
Keep in mind that returning diapers is costly; we’d encourage you to
order samples if you are not sure which type to get .
How to Set Up an
On-Line Baby Gift Registry Service
We work with a registry company, www.felicite.com. They have an easyto-use
system, and you can view a sample registry on their website . Your
registry links directly to Babyworks, so your friends and relatives can view
products before purchasing .
• Gift givers can find your registry by following the link on the home
page of our website or by going to www.felicite.com. If they don’t use
the internet, they can call to make purchases (we can then remove
items ordered from your registry). If Portlanders wish to avoid shipping
charges and pick up their gifts, they can call in their order for pick-up or
come and shop during regular store hours .
• To set up a registry, follow the link on the home page of our site. Then,
simply go through our website, select items you wish to order, and
select them with the “Add to Registry” button. If you are registering for
an item with multiple price levels (such as a single diaper vs . a dozen),
choose the quantity you want, then wait for the price to change above
before pressing “Add to Registry”, to be sure the correct quantity at the
correct price is added .
• Quantity discounts and sale prices are not available on registry orders.
• This registry does not seem to work properly if Firefox is used as a
browser on a Mac computer; try Safari.
• Any further questions? E mail or call us. And thanks so much for
registering with us!
A Note About Internet Product Reviews
Consider them, but take them with a grain of salt. As we’ve seen through many
years of experience, different products are favored by different people, because of
their own preferences and their baby’s body type. Some people are literally afraid
to try a particular product because someone gave it a negative review . The product
the reviewer “hates” may be one you “love”. We have seen this countless times.
All products we carry must have a 90% + “like” rate or we couldn’t afford to carry
it, with our return policy. Every single product on the market, including ours, has
someone who does not like it (even though the majority do) .
Shipping Overseas
(this does not apply to APO/PPO customers)
For Our Non-U.S.A. Customers
We’re happy to do business with anyone in the world; we just have to
do it differently. In fact, it’s exciting for us to see our products travel to the
near and far corners of the earth! Because of the high cost, we cannot
return foreign telephone calls or faxes, but we welcome you to call us;
you will need to use our non-toll-free telephone number (503-224-4696) .
Better yet, if you have a computer, we can communicate via e-mail to
answer questions or inquiries about shipping rates for specific orders to
your country. Rates vary widely on foreign orders, because of package
weight and destination; therefore, we must quote rates individually .
Some additional considerations:
• There may be additional taxes, fees or duty charged to you by your
country to receive your shipment from us; you’ll want to look into this.
• Delivery times vary widely, depending on the distribution system of
your country once the package reaches its borders . Standard delivery
can take as little as a few days to as long as a month to reach you .
If you are in a hurry, we can research a carrier who will guarantee
shipment by a particular date .
Do you have any comments for us about our products, our service,
our website, our catalog, recommendations of items you think we
might like to carry, or anything else?
Or - Do you have friends that would like to receive our catalog?
“Thanks so much for all your help. I really love
your stuff! I really love that you don’t do excessive
packaging, and you reuse boxes sometimes for
shipping. I really love that you send catalogs very
rarely (I don’t let most places I order from send me
catalogs because they send them every month or so),
and I really love that you don’t sell our information.
I’ve recommended you to many friends.”
C.T., Berkeley, CA
Some Thoughts on the “Diaper Debate”
In cloth diapers, your baby will enjoy the natural, healthful comfort of a real garment made of real fabric…
rather than a garment made of plastic and paper, laced with chemicals and perfumes (“wearable
garbage”?).
Health Benefits – Babies have less diaper rash with cotton diapers because of their breathability (this air
circulation means cooler temperatures within the diaper); the absence of chemical additives that can cause
skin irritation; and more frequent changes. (Ever removed a throwaway diaper that felt dry but weighed a
ton, full of “gelled” urine? This illusion of dryness often causes throwaway diapers to be left on overly long.)
Writers and researchers raise concerns about the wisdom of keeping a baby’s delicate skin in continuous contact with the chemical
additives; about the chemical vapors emitted from the diapers (toluene, xylene and styrene, among others) which were shown to be
respiratory irritants in studies involving rodents, and how the incidence of childhood asthma has skyrocketed since 1981; about the
highly toxic product dioxin which is a by-product in the paper bleaching process and which is harmful to the environment; and about
possible negative effects on male fertility due to the high temperatures in the diapers. Several customers have mentioned finding
chemical crystals stuck to their baby’s skin, prompting their switch to cloth.
Questions continue to be raised, and the answers remain somewhere in the future.
Environmental Benefits – The environmental price of throwaway convenience is high. By using cloth diapers,
you’ll help to save some of the 40 million trees felled each year just to make disposable diapers. You will also save one
ton of garbage containing untreated human waste from being buried in the earth – this is per baby. Once in the
landfill, conservative estimates are that these diapers will take 500 years to break down. Other estimates suggest
it will take far longer, due to the general absence of oxygen and sunlight needed for decomposition. The main
concern raised about cloth diapers is the water and energy it takes to launder them. Curiously,
this concern is never raised about any other consumer product (clothing, dishes, etc.), nor is it
ever suggested that other disposable products be used in areas of water shortage. Washing diapers is a minute
fraction of the overall laundering that is done; you can minimize its impact even further by choosing non-polluting, biodegradable
laundry products (a good practice for all laundering). Concerned about conventional cotton growing practices? You can buy organic.
Economic Benefits – Using cloth diapers can save you a bundle of money; see page 35 for a detailed cost analysis. These savings can
run into the thousands.
Just as rinsing and washing dishes has become second nature to virtually all of us (rather than the “ease” of exclusively using and
discarding disposable dishware), cloth diapering will soon become second nature to you, too. We’d like to see disposables returned to
the position in the market in which they were originally placed…a product to be used sparingly, not exclusively.
The Bottom Line
Cloth diapers simply feel better to our touch, to our hearts, to our babies, and to our Earth. No
garbage, no chemicals. They are a pure, natural and safe diapering choice. And they’re by far the most
economical choice. Yes, they take a little more effort than tossing something into the trash can. But
doesn’t anything in life that’s the least bit worthwhile?
