stuDent neWs Devin Bradbury ‘15 5th: We are proud that our fifth graders are members of the nation wide AAA school safety Program! it is an honored position that millions of boys and girls have served since the early 1920s. our students are providing a safer environment for us all. They are helping our children to become safe pedestrians, as well as fostering qualities of leadership and good citizenship. Pictured left to right: Ashley Munroe ’14, Kylee Madden ’14 and Brandon Elmy ‘14 4th: Whoooo, Whoooo, Whooo’se been inquiring, hypothesizing, and enjoying? Fourth grade, that’s who!!! This year in science, headed by their amazing teacher ms. davis, fourth graders are on a mission to experience and explore the many biomes around the world that make it so unique. Applying their knowledge of the scientific method and the food chain, fourth graders hopped on the magic odA school Bus, and delved into the inner workings of the digestive system of the owl. While dissecting owl pellets, the children discovered bones of numerous animals that owls find within their food chain that help the owl survive. it was an amazing exploratory experience, and it was a great opportunity to implement what each and every child was introduced to his/her textbook and during discussions. in so doing, a more concrete understanding of concepts developed that the children can then apply and see in their lives and the world around them. Aaron Juceam ‘15 6th: on november 10 th , the sixth grade sleepily boarded a bus for epcot to visit the international Food Festival for our geography class. Although we did have great fun, it truly was a “working” trip which involved visiting all the countries, experiencing the movies, pavilions and stores, talking to the young people from those countries, and answering the questions in our geography “passport” booklets. how lucky we are as Floridians to be able to have the opportunity to actually experience a bit of culture from these foreign countries just two hours away from sarasota! one of the amusing experiences on the trip was to watch the students try two new food items. We even had brave takers for escargot! All in all, it was a wonderful trip academically, and great bonding for our students and teachers.

The 6 th grade group made the rounds through the entire campus educating students, sharing stickers, and spreading the anti-drug message. The event culminated with the entire lower school gathering on the athletic fields, dressed in red, and forming a human chain. Pictured left to right: Grady Stauffer ’20, Kannon Miller ’20, Anya Sastry ’20, Wendy Kiesewetter ‘20 All Faiths Food Bank The lower school student council recently had the good fortune to visit All Faiths Food Bank. There they toured the facility as well as learned about how it serves the hungry in our very own community. it was an invaluable experience and gave the students a unique insight into how out-of-door can help to reduce hunger. The entire lower school participated in its annual food drive, with the hope of providing provisions and warm meals to the needy in our neighborhood. Thanks for caring! Birthday Book Club The out-of-door Academy Birthday Book club has been celebrating the birthdays of over thirty students who have participated in the program this fall. The participating students select their own book, pose for a photo for the bulletin board, and help affix the book plate with their name for perpetuity. This program helps the library grow as it gives the students a sense of pride and ownership in their school library. look for the explanatory letter and application that will arrive home during the appropriate birthday month.
