stuDent neWs Thunder Athletics F A L L S P O R T S W R A P - U P Cross Country The girl’s team consisted of Amanda Armbruster, Katherine ellicott, Gina maraia, Vanessa moody, caitlin scheulfer, michelle Van dalen, and Krystal young. Amanda was our team captain and was an outstanding leader. We took second and third in two of our meets and continued to work hard all season long. The last meet of the year was the district championships where each girl on the team had her personal best. michelle was our # 1 runner all season and was our team’s top finisher at the district meet. This year’s boys team consisted of Alec Armbruster, matt Fineberg, and Josh Kennon. Although we could not score as a team, we were still able to compete as individuals. The boys worked hard all season and each had his best 5K time of the year in the district championships. matt was our # 1 runner all season and performed very well in the district meet. coach Verrill expressed his recognition of the team for their hard work and sacrifice over the entire season. Football Varsity After a rough start, the Varsity football team finished with flare. The Thunder faced many challenges along the way during their inaugural campaign. injuries, inexperience, and youth were some of the obstacles the Thunder had to face. The team was led by seniors, Jake Grollman, Kevin mercier, harris Flynn, William crouse, and david cooper. The Thunder found a way to overcome these obstacles and found a way to win by finishing the season with a 6-3 record. JV Pride, respect, and unity are the three pillars our middle school football team are based upon. All three were tested this past season, allowing the Thunder to finish with a record of 4-4.
Golf The Thunder Golf Team had a banner year! our final season records was 10-3 with one match coming down to a three hole playoff. in 2005, we did not make it past districts, but this year we came in second place with a team score of 319. Zach Balit was the medalist for the entire field with a sub-par round of 69. We moved on to regionals which were played at the hideout in naples, Florida. With a combined score of 322, we finished in fifth place. unfortunately, only the top 2 teams move up to the state Finals. coach Aaron dressel states “with a team average much lower than last year, i only see us trending toward improvement next season.” nathan Feldhacker is the oldest player on the team, and he was just a Junior this year. next year we’ll have the same strong team we had this year while other teams will be losing many of their senior players. coach dressel is looking forward to next year and his confident that the team will make it to the state Finals. swimming This season we had seven girls and two boys competing on behalf of out-of-door. The team swam in dual meets this season with a record of 1-1 and four invitational meets. At districts our 200 medley relay team placed 6 th and our 200 free relay placed 6 th (Alexandra montgomery, maura mcdonald, heather steele, and samantha stein). Top finishers in their individual events were dan Bean placed 4 th – 100 breast, 7 th – 200 im, Trey malone 6 th – 100 back, 7 th – 500 free. We had six swimmers move on to the regional swim meet. At regionals our 200 medley relay team placed 14 th (Alexandra montgomery, maura mcdonald, heather steele, and samantha stein). dan Bean finished 13 th in the 100 breast, maura mcdonald finished 2 nd in the 100 fly and 6 th in the 50 free, and heather steele finished 8 th in the 100 back and 10 th in the 500 free. The team had one swimmer advance to the state meet, which was held in Ft. lauderdale. maura mcdonald finished her season with a 23 rd place in the 100 fly at states.
