GettInG tO KnOW YOu Dennis chapman Director of Advancement Where were you born and raised? i was born and raised in miami, Fl, and have spent the last 14 years of my life in West Palm Beach. What educational path did you pursue? When i first began college, i wanted to be the next esPn sportscenter anchor. once i realized that was not going to happen, i wrote sports for the Palm Beach Post, worked in Public relations for a semi-pro basketball team, and then started in the nonprofit sector, beginning with the children’s miracle network and continuing through The Benjamin school in north Palm Beach. What led you to choose your major or field of study? i knew that i wanted to be involved with communicating with people, so a degree in mass communications made sense. i have been able to translate that into several different fields and used it as a training ground to get where i am today. Why do you like doing what you are doing? i have always enjoyed forming and building relationships. Working in philanthropy affords me the opportunity to interact with our various constituents and work together to advance the mission of our school. The world of independent school philanthropy is especially rewarding, as i am part of the process in educating tomorrow’s leaders. What is your favorite? Food – steak and chicken Place – Being by or on the water sport – Golf (to play), Football (to watch) When you have leisure time, what do you like to do? i like to watch college football (although this was a tough year for my miami hurricanes…) and play golf when i can. Do you have any pets? no Dennis Chapman Why Out-of-Door? This is a special place. i have never experienced anything quite like the feeling that you get on the siesta Key campus. There is also a feeling of family here that makes me feel welcome. Your hopes/goals for the years ahead? i am excited to see the amazing things that we are going to do as a school in the next few years. This school is really primed for some great things, and i feel privileged to be a part of such a great group of people here. i think that the best is yet to come here at odA.
Alumni notes Class of 2006 Julie Rega’s art work was recently published in Aquaphyte, a newsletter published by university of Florida iFAs extension about aquatic, wetland, and invasive plants. Julie presented her art work as part of her AP Art collection last year while at out-of-door Academy. Class of 2005 Kathleen Connelly reports she is attending and enjoying loyola marymount university in los Angeles. Brittany Fuhr is playing volleyball at st. leo university in lake city, Florida. Class of 2004 Peter Dobosz is completing his junior year at the university of central Florida pursuing his degree in liberal studies. he is also a cast member at Walt disney World resort in entertainment. Class of 2002 natalia Battaglia just graduated from Vanderbilt university with a degree in communications and made the dean’s list her senior year. she enjoyed a semester in madrid, spain, and has accepted a position in d.c. at the consulting and human resource firm of corporate executive Board. Class of 2000 Vincenza Battaglia graduated early (thanks to AP classes) from the school of Foreign service college of Georgetown university and spent a year at a law firm in new york before beginning law school at Georgetown law. she will spend her first semester of her second year in Buenos Aires. Class of 1998 Brittany Callans hines is living in sarasota. she works for Beth callans management as a human resource director. she has a 2-1/2 year old son named William michael. Krystal Waterman is in her final year at Florida state university majoring in interior design. she attended out-ofdoor Academy from 1988-1998. Class of 1996 John Dooley and Andy (Drew) Peterson founded the J & d Professional Group in orlando. They both graduated from riverview high school in 2000. John graduated from university of central Florida. drew graduated from the university of Florida. Class of 1992 Melissa Barber is living in sarasota. she is an esol teacher, teaching reading to K-5 students at Tuttle elementary school. she is also working on her Phd in curriculum and instruction. Class of 1991 Robert schmidt, after graduating from Florida state university, is living in sarasota and involved in his family real estate business. he especially remembers making his stone that he feels “left a print of that time in your life that you can go back to and really remember your classmates, activities, and that day you made them.” sara Parton Pelgrift attended out-of-door Academy during the mid ’70s. she recently donated to the school a painting completed by her Aunt nike Parton, a well known siesta Key artist. steve Ayers writes, “back during the days i attended the out-of-door school (fall 1957 to spring 1960), the atmosphere there on the siesta Key campus was more like a summer camp than a school. The buildings i would guess were all original…25-35 year old wooden structures built using the platform type construction, as opposed to the slab and block construction common today. There was, of course, no air conditioning in any of the buildings.” i remember the old “swimming hole” on the ods property across ocean Boulevard from the main campus…two outdoor changing areas and a swimming area with two wooden piers. i remember riding horses on the beach. Back then ods had a stable just a stones throw from the library. We would cross the road and ride along the gulf. i remember the musty smell of the old library. i remember the occasional classes… “out of doors” under a banyan tree. And then, of course, there is out-of-door’s “first ever” football game, a 14-13 win over st. martha’s on december 4, 1958.
