1. RSM’s Double Degree programme
Introduction
Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University has a Double Degree programme, which
combines a master at RSM with a master abroad. The Double Master’s Degree in Management (DM²)
programme is the result of a unique collaboration between RSM and four other leading European
institutions:
* ESADE (Barcelona, Spain) : www.esade.es
* University of St. Gallen (Switzerland) : www.unisg.ch
* Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi (Milan, Italy) : www.uni-bocconi.it
Please note that one university has left the Double Degree programme. Per 2013-2014 RSM students
can no longer choose HEC Paris for the Double Degree programme.
Lasting for approximately 2½ years – including one year spent at another DM² partner school – the
programme has been designed specifically for students who want to add a second Master’s degree to
the one in Rotterdam. In doing so they will hold two degrees from renowned business schools,
significantly increasing their value to potential employers.
Only bachelor students from RSM Erasmus University are eligible to apply for the DM² Programme.
One of the following RSM master programmes will have to be done during the master year in
Rotterdam:
- MSc in Entrepreneurship & New Business Venturing
- MSc in Finance & Investments
- MSc in Marketing Management
- MSc in Strategic Management
- MSc in Supply Chain Management
Every year, around 10-12 RSM students can be selected to participate in this programme. Only
qualified and motivated students are eligible for participation. Good study results, study progress,
language skills and a solid motivation are important selection criteria. Please read the concerning
chapter for more information.
The DM² study programme
DM² students from RSM participate in a study programme with a time span of approximately 2 ½
years, depending on the programme of the partner university. As a DM² student you will follow the
same Master Programme courses as every other MSc student in Rotterdam (in one of the above
mentioned programmes).
During your Master year abroad you have to pass at least 40 ECTS in courses which can be
combined with your Master Programme at RSM. Specific requirements differ between the participating
schools and between Master Programmes, so inform yourself well. At the end of the programme,
students must have gained 120 ECTS in credits. The combined Master Thesis at the end of the
programme will be supervised both by the home and the host university.
Degree
After completing the Double Degree programme, you will obtain a degree from RSM and a degree
from the partner university. For the RSM master programmes Marketing Management, Strategic
Management and Entrepreneurship the degree is Master of Science in Business Administration. For
the other two masters you will either get the degree MSc in Supply Chain Management or MSc in
Finance & Investments.
Tuition fee
During the whole DM² period you will stay registered at RSM. You keep paying tuition fee to the
Erasmus University during your time abroad and are exempted from tuition fee payment to the host
university. Most universities however require you to pay an administration or graduation fee.
Guidelines Double Degree in Management 2013-2015
Changes in tuition fees
Be aware that the government is currently installing fines or higher tuition fees for students who study
longer (‘langstudeerderboete’) or who do 2 master studies.
Concerning the higher tuition fee for students who do 2 masters.
When a student has already completed one subsidised master study and wishes to pursue a second
master, the government will no longer finance the second degree programme. The consequence is
that students wishing to pursue a second master, after already having completed one subsidised
programme, will then have to pay a higher tuition fee.
This rule only concerns subsidised masters done in the Netherlands. The Double Degree programme
exists out of 2 components; the 1-year home degree and a 1 year abroad. The Dutch government
does not look at studies done abroad. So this new legislation will not be applicable for the Double
Degree programme.
Concerning the longer duration of study (‘langstudeerdersboete’)
Students will be entitled to a limited time to complete their studies at the subsidised low tuition fee of
€ 1,713. This entitlement is the nominal duration plus one year. If you study longer you will be ‘fined’
with a supplement of € 3,000 per year in addition to your tuition fee. The Double Degree programme is
not registered with the Dutch government as a 2-year programme. It consists of 2 complete separate
masters, that will lead to 2 different degrees. During the whole time you will be registered at the
Erasmus University. When that registration exceeds 2 years (the nominal 1 year + 1 year), students
will be subject to the fine.
At the time this brochure was made, it was unclear how and when these rules will be applied.
Inform yourself well, the ESSC will have more information.
Visa & Insurance
Before and during your stay abroad you are responsible for your own visa arrangements, if applicable.
You are also responsible for e.g. third-party and medical insurances.
Academic workload
The minimum workload of the DM² is 120 ECTS. In all cases, the study package should contain
enough credits to comprise a full workload equivalent to both DM² university requirements in order to
obtain two fully recognised Master degrees.
No credits will be given for language or culture courses taken abroad.
Some degrees require an internship, inform yourself well by the partner school about the criteria (duration,
location, timing, level of internship).
Individual Study Programme Proposal
All DM² students will have to make their own individual study plan. Therefore, no general DM² study
programme overview can be given. All applicants should carefully investigate which 2 master
programmes (at RSM and the partner school) they would like to choose. Most Master combinations are
possible, though some programmes or courses do not fit content wise. In the application, each student
should motivate why he/she chooses a certain combination. It is NOT possible to combine similar
programmes, for instance Marketing Management at RSM Erasmus University and the Marketing
master at ESADE.
This proposal should be handed in at the Programme Manager with their application. The selection
committee of RSM decides whether the chosen Master course combination is possible. The partner
university will need to approve the study programme proposal as well.
Note:
Be aware that you can apply for only one of these programmes during one academic year:
• Master Exchange Programme
• MSc International Management/CEMS
• Double Master’s Degree in Management programme
hopefully confirm your admission. From that moment on you can send all your questions directly to the
contact person of that university. Completion of application forms, taking care of accommodation,
