Safety Reasonable steps are taken to provide a safe and secure environment for all students living in the residence halls. Students can help keep the halls safe and secure by managing their own personal safety and by following a few simple rules listed here. eLeCtriCAL power StripS And extenSion CordS When additional electrical outlets are needed, residents must use UL-approved electrical power strips with built-in circuit breakers. Multiple plug adapters and extension cords are not permitted. Power strips should never be plugged into another power strip. Power strips should never be placed above the ceiling tiles, put underneath carpet, or stapled or pinched in any way. Running power strips underneath the mattress is prohibited. Key/CArd Students will receive a room key and university student ID card, which provide access to their hall and room and should be kept in their possession at all times. If a student loses a key/card, he or she should inform his/her residence hall staff immediately. It is the student’s responsibility to keep the room key and access card in his/ her possession at all times. Keys and cards are never to be loaned out to anyone. For safety, keep rooms locked. APPLIANCES AND EqUIPMENT Prohibited appliances and equipment include, but are not limited to, the following: • air conditioners (with the exception of Walton Hall and Hart Hall where the university provides permanently installed window units) • camping stoves • candles • ceiling fans • electric power tools (with the exception of storage for use outside the halls) • electric skillets • gas power tools • griddles • grills (electric press type, charcoal or propane) SeCurity Security is of prime concern to the Residence Life staff. Outside doors are locked at all times to keep unwanted visitors from entering the buildings. Access is gained through an electronic card-access system and the university student ID card. However, any security measure is only as good as the resident allows. Residents should not prop open outside doors. This will set off alarms. Residents must not allow visitors to enter the residence halls unescorted and should report any suspicious activity to hall staff immediately. Students should be sure to lock their door when sleeping or when out of the room. Texas A&M University has uniformed security officers patrolling residence hall complex areas and the Corps Quad on foot 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As another measure of security, the Department of Residence Life has teamed up with the Department of Security and University Police to create Community-Oriented Police Services (COPS). Services available include personal safety awareness, drug and alcohol awareness, property engraving, and much more. Transportation Services has a fleet of 80 buses/vans providing on- and off-campus, paratransit and charter services for Texas A&M University. Bus service is fare free to all students, faculty, staff and visitors to Texas A&M. On-campus service consists of routes that move passengers from point to point around campus. Off-campus service is used to transport students, faculty and staff to and from campus. Off-campus service consists of routes that cover Bryan and College Station. Paratransit service is provided for our permanently disabled students. It requires an application be filed with and approved by Transportation Services. See http://transport.tamu.edu. FREqUENTLY ASkED PARkING & TRANSPORTATION qUESTIONS what is a “transportation fee”? The transportation fee, located on the students’ statement, is a $70 per semester fee ($35 per summer term) assessed to provide them with unlimited fare-free access to both the on-campus and off-campus shuttle services, expand shuttle services and provide revenue for a long-term bus replacement plan. In addition, revenues will pay for operating expenses and the enhancement of bus facilities on campus. This fee is subject to change. how does the shuttle bus system work? The university operates an on-campus transit system that can be used by anyone on campus at no charge. This is the quickest and most efficient mode of transportation for students who want to move about the campus once they have parked their vehicles. For students who live off campus, the university operates an off-campus transit system that serves most of the major apartment complexes and housing areas in Bryan/College Station, as well as the Blinn College campus. All shuttle services are included in student registration fees and do not require a bus pass. Parking & Transportation Services Are bicycles encouraged on campus? Free bicycle registration is offered and encouraged. There are numerous bike racks on campus and a growing bike community and program. where can students park their car? All incoming students need to be aware that parking is at a premium on campus, and often the available parking may not be immediately adjacent to their building or facilities. A student who parks a vehicle on campus is required to purchase a parking permit. There may be a waiting list for premium areas, including garages.
