For many students, the housing application and
assignment process can be somewhat complicated,
but the staff at the Department of Residence Life will
do everything they can to make it as smooth as possible.
You should always contact them if you have a question of
any kind. New students with permanent assignments will
receive their assignments mailed to their home address and
posted on our website in the first part of July. Those few
students who will have temporary assignments will have
their assignments mailed and posted in early August. During
the academic year, students will have several opportunities
to request changes to their assignment.

CAnCeLLAtionS
The housing contract is for
the entire academic year or for
the remaining portion of the
academic year if the contract is
signed after the start of the fall
semester.
Students who cancel their
contracts after July 15, but
before classes start, will be billed
25 percent of the fall semester
rent and forfeit the deposit.
If the housing contract is
broken for the spring semester,
a charge equal to 50 percent
of that semester’s rent will be
charged unless the housing
cancellation rent penalty is
excused by the terms of the
contract (the deposit is also
forfeited). Notification of
cancellation must be submitted
in writing by the student,
mailed or delivered in person
to the Housing Assignments
Office. Requests made to other
offices will not be honored.

General Information
hALL ASSignmentS
Residence hall spaces are distributed
on a first-come, first-served
basis. This process is driven
by the priority date, which is
defined as the date the housing
application is received in the
Residence Life Housing Assignments
Office. Based upon the
number of current students who
reserve their housing space for
the fall semester, the Housing
Assignments Office will determine
the number of students
who will be offered residence
hall space for the 2012-2013
academic year. Every attempt is
made to place students in the
residence hall requested. However,
each building has limited
space, and students already
living in a specific residence hall
receive preferred assignment
to that hall. If students do not
receive the hall or room assignment
of their choice, they will
have an opportunity to request a
change after arriving.
hALL ChAngeS
If a student is not happy with his/
her building assignment, he/
she may request a hall change
on the first day of class each
semester at the Residence Life
homepage, http://reslife.tamu.
edu. The number of requests to
change halls as well as the availability
of space in each hall will
determine the student’s chances
for a hall change. Hall changes
are prioritized according to the
priority date and are approved on
an availability basis by the Housing
Assignments Office. Students
should contact their residence
hall staff for information when
checking into their hall.
