During the year, students will interact
with a wide variety of Department
of Residence Life staff. Perhaps
the most important resources will be their
residence hall staff. The primary goal of
the Department of Residence Life is to
facilitate the formation of a community that
encourages the personal, social, cultural
and academic development of the students
living in the residence halls. To read more
The community director (CD)and graduate
hall director (GHD) are important resources in
your residence hall experience. The CD or GHD
has overall responsibility for the hall. The CD or
GHD provides individual and group assistance
to residents, advises the hall council, supervises
resident advisors, and works with staff and the
hall council to establish a supportive and positive
learning environment in the hall. Students should
feel free to talk with the CD or GHD about any
personal or academic issues or suggestions for hall
improvement. They are a wealth of information
and resources.
Residence Hall Leadership
reSident AdviSor
The resident advisor (RA) is one of the most
helpful and resourceful fellow students you will
interact with at Texas A&M. RAs have been
carefully selected because of their leadership
potential, interpersonal skills, positive attitude and
sense of commitment. As a peer, the student’s RA
provides basic information and referral services
and assists residents in adjusting to campus
life, including helping with academic concerns,
roommate relationships, homesickness and
other matters. The RA is responsible for helping
residents meet each other and build a strong
community on the floor. Students should contact
their RA if they have questions or need assistance.
Being a leader in a residence hall is an experience
to always remember. Being able to lead where
you live and meeting hundreds of your fellow
Aggies with whom you share a common bond
are great ways to begin your time in Aggieland.
How engaging and energetic your hall council is
depends on your level of involvement.
Activities of an active hall council include
promotion of the Aggie Spirit, inclusive
leadership, cohesion of all community members
and academic success. The realization of a
leadership vision in hall councils also creates
much of the energy of our nationally recognized
Residence Hall Association (RHA). Meet your
hall council president or hall director to become
involved in your community. Residence hall
councils and the Residence Hall Association are
strong Aggie traditions that span over 40 years.
To become an active student leader in RHA,
Like RHA, the National Residence Hall Honorary
(NRHH) has regional and national opportunities
for student leaders to serve. NRHH membership
is selected through a nomination process each
semester. One percent of the total number of
students who live in our residence halls is eligible
for membership within this honor society. The
more engaged you are in your residence hall
community, the more likely you are to be selected
as a member of NRHH.
