C<strong>on</strong>sumer 'Email Insecurity' Documented<br />
More than half of c<strong>on</strong>sumer email users use at least two email addresses, apparently to<br />
<strong>the</strong>mselves from spam and cybercrime, according to an October 2007 survey by email<br />
service Habeas and market research firm Ipsos that found what it called a high "email<br />
factor" am<strong>on</strong>g regular email users.<br />
Am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> findings:<br />
73%: Survey participants who use email daily<br />
62%: C<strong>on</strong>cerned about becoming victims of fraud or cybercrime<br />
60%: Say spam is becoming worse<br />
83%: Say <strong>the</strong>ir email client's user interface has a spam butt<strong>on</strong><br />
23%: Say <strong>the</strong>ir email service has fraud detecti<strong>on</strong><br />
64%: Say permissi<strong>on</strong>/pers<strong>on</strong>al email regularly get routed to <strong>the</strong> spam folder or blocke<br />
"Despite <strong>the</strong> popularity, ubiquity, cost-effectiveness and targeted nature of email, <strong>on</strong>li<br />
relati<strong>on</strong>ships and <strong>the</strong> interacti<strong>on</strong>s that enable <strong>the</strong>m are very fragile," said Habeas CEO<br />
Cahill. "If individuals, marketers, businesses and Web 2.0 communities cannot place t<br />
in email, <strong>the</strong> Internet's premier 'killer app' will not reach its full potential as <strong>the</strong>se grou<br />
refrain from using it for higher value interacti<strong>on</strong>s."<br />

Spam Angst Reduced<br />
The Pew Internet and American Life Project reported survey results are giving email m<br />
and publisher a reas<strong>on</strong> to grin: Americans seem to be less bo<strong>the</strong>red by junk email than<br />
four years ago.<br />
18%: Spam is a big problem (25% in 2003)<br />
51%: Spam is annoying (57% in 2003)<br />
26%: Spam is not a problem at all (16% in 2003)<br />
More Americans say <strong>the</strong>y can tell good email from spam:<br />
68%: Almost never unintenti<strong>on</strong>ally open spam (63% in 2003)<br />
27%: Sometimes open spam email by accident (34% in 2003)<br />
