Standard 4:<br />

Management and humane<br />

destruction of weak, ill or<br />

injured livestock<br />

Outcome<br />

Weak, ill or injured livestock are identified<br />

and promptly treated in a humane manner.<br />

Principles<br />

1. Expectations for assuring that livestock are<br />

fit for the intended journey are<br />

communicated to livestock suppliers to<br />

minimise the risk of receiving weak, ill or<br />

injured livestock at the establishment.<br />

2. Consignments of livestock are assessed upon<br />

arrival and weak, ill or injured livestock are<br />

identified and recorded.<br />

3. Livestock identified to be weak, ill or injured<br />

or suffering from other ailments that impact<br />

on their welfare are assessed by a competent<br />

person and the appropriate action is promptly<br />

taken.<br />

4. For animals identified for humane<br />

destruction or emergency slaughter,<br />

the procedure is promptly carried out using<br />

approved methods5 .<br />

5. Moribund animals are euthanased on the<br />

spot (prior to being moved) and without delay.<br />

6. There is a procedure in place for recording<br />

and reporting on welfare incidents for<br />

feedback to suppliers6 and for the purposes<br />

of regular review of livestock welfare<br />

outcomes.<br />
