Performance Indicators for Standard 5
(Management of Livestock to Minimise Stress and Injuries)
5.2 Livestock are
segregated
in pens in
accordance with
species
5.3 Livestock are
penned with
sufficient
space to move
freely, lie down
and access
water facilities
Note: 5.5
covered
above in
Std 4
5.6, 5.7,
5.8
Steps are taken
to manage
any aggressive
or unfamiliar
animals that
may fight
in pens
Implements
used to aid
the handling
of livestock
are appropriate
for the species
and are used
judiciously
to minimise
stress and
injury in
livestock
Where dogs
are used to
aid moving
livestock, they
are trained,
muzzled and
supervised
whilst
working.
Livestock that are weak, ill or
injured are penned separately.
Livestock are able to:
• move without restriction,
• lie down as necessary,
• access water without any
difficulty.
Where aggression between
animals is observed and
likely to cause injury, action is
taken to manage or separate
aggressive animals 21 .
Electric
prodders
Electric prodders
are ‘fit for purpose’
and used
appropriately when
moving livestock.
Electric prodders
are not used:
• on animals < 3
months of age,
• on sensitive
areas of the
animal’s body
(eyes, ears,
nose, anus, etc).
Electric prod use
is monitored as
part of the internal
audit procedure
Dogs Dogs are well
trained, muzzled
and supervised
when working with
livestock. Dogs are
not to be used
• on any animal
