Estimate of people working and staying in the small scale gold mining areas in Suriname was 40,000 persons . Specification of this target population according to age, sex, activity involved? a) Goldworkers: est 20,000 b) Service providers: est 20,000 (fuels, cloths washing, sex-workers, cooks, spare parts, mechanics etc) c) An estimate of 25% of the 40,000 persons are women (also women in de gold business with their husbands, 10,000) d) Of the 20,000 gold-workers estimated 50% are Brazilians (10,000) and 50% are Surinamese persons (10,000) e) Of the 20,000 persons rendering services to the gold miners, 75% are Brazilians (15000) The other nationalities Like Columbian, Dominican, Chinese etc are 1% or less f) Everyone is in the age bracket 16/17 – 45 years In general there are about 40-50 CSW’s per 2000 gold-workers, but for the Benzdorp area this average is higher and can be estimated at 300 per 2000 gold-workers active in that village. Also mining standards are absent and the environment is severely poisoned with mercury. Still the gold miners are walking around or working in the pits with not more than rubber slippers. Usually medicines are not at hand and people have to travel to Paramaribo to get medical help. The commercial sex workers experience great competition between each other. The younger the CSW, the more wanted she will be. This group will not leave the work area since upon return her place might have been taken by another, younger girl or boy. So she stays in the interior even if she’s sick. It also happens that camp-owners do not allow medicines so as to stimulate the circulation of sex workers. i If one is sick, she or he must then take care of him- or herself. This description is reason to classify this population as a definite MARP. Calculating the population at risk for having HIV in the target population The national prevalence rate for Suriname in age bracket 15 – 45 years old was 1% in 2009. 5 The seroprevalence rate for commercial sex workers was 7.2% and for commercial street sex workers was 15.7%. 6 Number of gold miners in the areas is 20,000. On every 2000 gold miners there are an estimated 40-50 sex workers. 7 The assumption here is 45 sex workers. In Benzdorp, this ratio is somewhat higher and is estimated at 300 for the 2000 gold workers active there. 1) Number of commercial sex workers other areas: 20,000 – 2000 (gold miners in Benzdorp) = 18,000. 18000/2000 = 9 x 45 = 405 sex workers 2) Number of CSW’s Benzdorp is estimated at 300. Total CSW’s = 705. Prevalence ratio for CSSW’s (street workers) is 15.7; 15.7% x 705= 110 estimated number of probable HIV/AIDS infected persons. Population in the target areas is 25,000 (40,000 total minus 15000 Surinamese who are covered by the Medical Mission or the Social Affairs Medical card. ) 1% prevalence rate makes 250 persons probably infected with HIV/AIDS 2% prevalence rate makes 500 persons probably infected with HIV/AIDS Of this population around 24,500 persons have the Brazilian nationality. An unknown percentage, very small – is documented and is usually married to a Surinamese partner, while keeping their rights as Brazilians. c. Behaviour: Percentage seeking care (public, private) The Medical Mission of Suriname 8 (MMS) indicated that Brazilian workers when sick (general illnesses), go to the MMS clinics in the interior. They are then treated at cost.
