By Hal Jandorf Nine Porsches and 18 R.U.F.-fians challenged the weather gods and met in the Santa Barbara Sears parking lot the morning of June 16th. The day began with a fine drizzle, but by the time we departed, the air was dry and the sky was filled with the typical “June Gloom” overcast. Actually, fine weather for driving at mid-60s Fahrenheit. The destination was Avila Beach and Fat Cat’s Café for lunch. On the San Marcos Pass highway (154), we were greeted by a California Highway Patrol cruiser with an easily spotted radar gun. Our intrepid group of Porsches throttled down to speed limit, disappointing the CHP officer, no doubt. Minutes later, we found CHP cars on both sides of the highway. We assumed it was a filming location, since there were a plethora of film crew trucks parked on the shoulder. My radar detector was really busy in the next few minutes. Passing Los Olivos, we turned on Foxen Canyon Road. Here we found the 14 serenity of back roads with very little traffic. Foxen Canyon Road has fairly smooth, level driving with well -marked curves. Many of our Porsches have tiptronic transmissions, and a few of us had the opportunity to try the manual mode. As someone who usually drives a 6-speed, I thoroughly enjoyed this two-pedal experience in my wife Terry’s Cayman. As to the scenery, it did not disappoint. We passed by verdant pastures, rolling hills, tiny towns and many wineries that are a trademark of Central California. Back to the 101, our route went through Pismo Beach with a view of the muted ocean beneath the gray cloud cover. The road to Avila Beach reminded me of the East Coast. An old green metal bridge crossed over the road and seemed to disappear into a lush forest. Finally we reached Avila Beach with its long pier that stretches to the horizon. Parking at Fat Cat’s Café was easy, and there was a table area outside. The food was indeed appreciated after our long drive and the portions were HUGE! That’s August 2011 • Santa Barbara Region • Porsche Club of America • www.pcasb.org R.U.F.-ing It In Avila Beach The R.U.F.-ians at Fat Cat’s Café in Avila Beach why they call it FAT Cat’s Café. No skinny cats here! Nick had Eggs Benedict with a slab of ham the thickness of a performance tire! (It looked delicious in spite of my analogy.) Terry had fish and chips and she confessed that they were the best she’d ever had! The bonus of these adventures is the camaraderie with our R.U.F. group. Bill Wilson and I compared our driving experiences with our identical Caymans. Nick told us about his future trip to Greece. And Mike Turek reminded me of the crazy Honda driver that had to blast ahead of our group only to slow down for traffic. This was a relaxed trip, one that is enjoyable with friends. Thanks to Nick Liakas, Mike Turek, John Shutt and Barbara Oldfield, Kris & Don Galloway, Corwin and Trent Toyoma, Bill Wilson and Howard Park, Mary Anne Pare, plus Brandon, Joe & Jane Niederst.
