President’s Column
Bill Sampson
The smoke has barely subsided from the July 4th
celebrations and it is time to compose my August column.
We have one busy club. That is a good, make that a great,
thing.
Hal & Terry Jandorf, fresh from their starring roles on the
Speed Channel, will lead us once again on a stargazing trip on
August 6. We will be at the very tall Mt. Piños on a very dark
night enabling us to view our universe through telescopes
provided by Hal and some of his friends. Bring your alternate
vehicle to Camarillo in the morning, take a nap, and join us in the
early evening in Frazier Park. See our website to sign up.
After bringing your skateboard or other alternative vehicle to
the Santa Barbara breakfast on August 13, treat your Porsche to
a professional inspection and yourself to some refreshments, all
at no charge, courtesy of our friends at Rusnak Porsche Westlake.
Member Appreciation Day is a benefit just for our club. See page
6 for more information.
The Progressive Dinner scheduled for August 27 is sold out.
That is a good object lesson in the benefit of signing up early for
club events. Activities Chairs Ted Lighthizer and Doreen Pankow
report that there may be some openings to those on the wait list.
Contact them if you’d like to be included.
If you were slower than you wished, or, even if you set a new
personal best at the July 31 autocross that will be history by the
time you hold this publication in your eager hands, the club will
furnish you another chance to prove your car handling skills at
the September 17 autocross in Camarillo. See page 25 to sign up.
Help, whether you drive or not, is always welcomed. Jeff Merrick
and Jeff Parker always pitch in, as does very busy Activities Co-
Chair Ted Lighthizer. Dan Byers and Martin Keller co-chair our
five autocrosses this year.
Driving in accordance with the California Vehicle Code will
be offered during the September 25 run to the infamous location
of the death of 1950s icon James Dean at the intersection of
Highways 41 and 46 near Cholame. Kent Bodin will lead us on a
trip to one of California’s more remote locales to commemorate
the well known actor and Porsche racer. Wine tasting and an
optional overnight stay in a local hotel are offered. See page 18.
As I write, I ponder, along with most Southern California
motorists, “Carmageddon” on Interstate 405. Let’s hope traffic
has cleared in time for you to read this magazine. I do know
that the same day some of you will have become more adept at
car detailing in preparation for the concours and some will have
taken the extra step of being certified as judges. Thanks so much
August 2011 • Santa Barbara Region • Porsche Club of America • www.pcasb.org
to you and to co-chairs Carolyn Ewbank and Dick Douglass. Put
your knowledge to work at the October 9 concours. See page 15
for more information on the concours. Also, there will be a preconcours
“Detail Clinic” on September 10 at Lavaggio (page 19).
Since a winery tour will be included in the James Dean run, the
planned October Harvest Tour has been postponed to 2012. It
will sell out whenever we schedule it, so look for it next year.
We are truly blessed in this club to have many members step
forward to help make us the success that we are. The nominating
committee of Mike Hodson, Janice Herndon and Nick Liakas
has assembled a proposed slate of both elected and appointed
board members that is very strong and is nearly complete. Nick
has served as chair of and driving force behind our R.U.F. group
since 2005. He will “retire” from this position at the end of
2011. Those of you who have enjoyed (or who plan to enjoy)
the monthly outings of this group should seriously consider
becoming the chairperson of it. Yes, it will take some of your
time. Your donation of that time and effort will assure R.U.F.’s
continued existence. Without a chairperson the group and the
outings will cease. Please let the nominating committee or me
know of your interest and qualifications.
The club sends its sincere condolences to member (and Der
Auspuff printer) Mike Pomerantz, who lost his wife Adri to
cancer on July 3.
During composition of this column I attempted to email a
member, who shall remain nameless. I checked our up-to-date
roster (thank you Janice Herndon) and located his email address.
The email bounced. PLEASE, when your address, phone, or
email change, go to the PCA web site www.pca.org, sign in,
highlight “Membership,” then highlight “Member Services,” then
click on “Member Record.” Follow the instructions to update any
information that needs changing. Our local records will reflect
the new information, which is a big help to club leadership.
Please indulge me here; you’re all invited to the free “Woodies
at the Beach” on August 20, 2011 at Santa Barbara City College.
Those who bring pre-1973 cars (yes, Porsches, too) will be
afforded display parking on the lawn as space permits.
From The Editor’s Desk
John Alfenito
R ead all about driving a new 997 on the
German Autobahn at speeds reaching
150 mph in this month’s edition. Three
couples from our region went on a very
memorable “Treffen” adventure. Part One
of their story begins this month on page 10.
If you’ve never tried a Gimmick Rally, hopefully Phil Reeese’s
entertaining article on this year’s event will convince you to
join us next year. Pam & I had a blast, with her driving and me
“navigating.” We may not have scored well, but we didn’t get lost,
so we’ve got that going for us.
Bob Roe & Suzi Sheller went to the 100th Indianapolis 500
with Andy Granatelli. Read all about it on page 21. And Hal
& Terry Jandorf appeared on Speed Channel in the “Porsche
Performance Series.” Find out more, and get a link to the video on
page 23. Until next month...

JULY 2, 2011 • CAMARILLO BREAKFAST
Fourth of July Weekend Starts In Style
Story & Photos by John Alfenito
The Fourth of July holiday weekend got off to a rousing start
as 142 members and guests arrived at The Way-Point Café
for our Camarillo Breakfast. Seventy-two Porsches graced
the lawn adjacent to the patio, including the twin Carrera GTs
belonging to Tony & Rick Principe of Westlake Village (see cover).
It’s always a treat to see one of the Porsche supercars in person; it’s
especially fun to see two at once.
SBR President Bill Sampson welcomed everyone and
introduced Membership Chair Janice Herndon. Janice recognized
new members Ron & Lavelle Consiglio of Oxnard and Tom &
Audi Marshall of Camarillo. Also joining us for breakfast were
prospective members James Bretherton of Westlake Village and
Mike Siroll with his daughter, Maggie, from Santa Clarita. Also,
from the Los Angeles Region, Jason, Justine and Joshua Zimmel
from Canoga Park were among the guests.
Activities Co-Chairs Doreen Pankow and Ted Lighthizer
promoted the many upcoming SBR events (see page 26), reminding
everyone to sign up early as our activities fill to capacity quickly.
Another great breakfast meeting with more to come next
weekend in Santa Barbara. =
JULY 9, 2011 • SANTA BARBARA BREAKFAST
A Royal Reception at Moby Dick’s
Story & Photos by John Alfenito
On the coincidental occasion of the Duke & Duchess
of Cambridge’s visit to the Santa Barbara Polo Club in
Carpinteria, many of our regular breakfast-goers opted
to stay off the roads, so our 33 members and guests had plenty
of room to stretch out for our July SB gathering. President Bill
Sampson introduced Activities Co-Chair Doreen Pankow, who
was filling in for Membership Chair Janice Herndon (on vacation),
and Doreen gave us the tally of 19 Porsches on the pier.
Doreen also recognized new SBR member Tyler Tedeschi of
Goleta and his friend, Ellen Self, both of whom were attending
their first club breakfast. We hope it will be just the first of many for
them. Other guests this morning included Dan Byers’ son, Shane,
and Linda & Don Kuckenbaker’s daughter, Kathryn Carbajal, and
their granddaugher, Caroline Carbajal.
Bill Sampson introduced Concours Co-Chair Dick Douglass,
who presented his “Top Ten Reasons To Attend Concours Judges
New member Tyler Tedeschi of Goleta and his guest Ellen Self
attended their first club breakfast in their Boxster.
School” the following weekend at Lavaggio’s in Agoura Hills. No
mention of the impending “Carmageddon” was made, which was
probably just as well, since we were all tired of hearing about the
pending closure of the 405 freeway.
Activities Co-Chair Ted Lighthizer listed the many SBR
activities coming up on the calendar, including the “Porsches2Pinos
2” stargazing tour scheduled for August 6. Our own Hal Jandorf,
who will once again lead this expedition, spoke about his Speed
Channel Porsche Performance Series show (see page 23), and the
astronomy drive to Mt. Pinos. This event was very popular last year,
which is why it’s making a return to the events schedule this year.
Finally, Bill reminded everyone that Autocross season would
begin on July 31 in Santa Barbara at Earl Warren Showgrounds.
Then, we’ll set up the cones again, twice in Camarillo at the airport:
first on September 17, then again on October 29 in a special “bonus”
autocross to benefit our designated charity for 2011, Habitat For
Humanity. Everyone is encouraged to spread the word, and invite
car friends (even non-club members) to join us on any or all of
these dates. =
By David & Susan Stone
Have you ever thought about
visiting the birthplace of
Porsche? Driving the German
Autobahn at high speed in
a 911? Touring on back roads through
the beautiful Austrian countryside and
over the Alps? Sampling the local cuisine
in ancient castles and farmhouses? Or
visiting the original Porsche factory, the
new factory and new Porsche museum?
Recently, five SBR members and a guest
did just that and more on an eightday
“Treffen” (German for meeting),
sponsored by PCA and Fast Lane Travel,
Inc. of Clearwater, Florida. It was truly a
bucket-list experience to remember and
one that we’d like to share with you in this
two-part story.
Our adventure began in July 2010 at
the Porsche Parade when I won a “Mini-
Treffen” in one of the raffles held during
the week. I had always dreamed of taking
this special vacation, so Susan and I felt
that it was now or never. I contacted the
Treffen Meister, Peter Sontag of Fast Lane
Travel, who encouraged us to expand the
trip to the full week and schedule it for the
spring of 2011. Word of our plan spread
among SBR members, and soon Randy &
Sue Kinsling decided to join in the fun.
As the time approached to depart, Steve
Karolyi and friend Julie Tye also came on
board.
We decided to arrive in Stuttgart a
day early to avoid the perils of jet lag on
the first day of the official itinerary. We
checked into our hotel, the Steigenberger
Graf Zeppelin, on Friday afternoon, April
29th, which gave us time to explore the
Konigstrasse, the main shopping avenue
that’s perfect for strolling, eating and
people-watching. It’s set amongst some of
Stuttgart’s most historic buildings. Peter
arranged for a get-together dinner that
evening in the cellar of a beautiful old
restaurant in downtown Stuttgart, where
10
we dined on a variety of delicious entrees
and side dishes, followed by a generous
wine tasting session. This was the perfect
opportunity to meet several other Treffen
members who had also arrived early.
Saturday included a tour of the new
Mercedes Museum nearby, which not only
showcases the many beautiful cars of the
past but also provides an historic overview
of world affairs at the time each model
was introduced. That evening, we dined
at the 12th century Dicker Turm Castle in
Esslingen where we were joined by Jorg
Austen, a retired Porsche executive and
renowned author and engineer. During
our week, he was a wealth of information
about everything Porsche.
On Sunday, May 1st, we departed our
Stuttgart hotel for the 280-mile trip to
Salzburg, Austria, in the new Porsches
we had ordered. Most members of our
two groups opted for a 911 C4S coupe,
but a 911 S Cabriolet and a Panamera 4S
were also chosen. One couple had taken
European delivery of their Slate Grey
Metallic C4S coupe the previous week,
which provided a nice contrast to all of
our black cars.
May 1st was a European holiday, and
traffic was light. It was also Sunday when
trucks are not allowed on the Autobahn.
The Treffen group meets for its first dinner - Friday evening in Stuttgart
This translated into wide-open “fast lane
travel.” As we passed the no speed limit
signs, we heard Peter tell us to “put the
pedal to the metal” over our walkietalkies,
and we did just that. Everyone
was able to safely exceed 150 mph several
times before again reaching the controlled
sections of highway, and we were later
rewarded with 150 MPH Club patches and
stickers to commemorate the occasion. I
can truly say that we have a new respect
and appreciation for the performance
capabilities of these new Porsches. They
are simply incredible!
The pack of Porsches hits the road
The Panamera gets crunched.
Exiting the Autobahn, we drove a short
distance on country roads and slowly
approached a T-intersection controlled
by a yield sign. Our lead car was the
Panamera, which was unfortunately struck
by a compact car approaching from the
left and not seen by the Panamera driver
(not one of us). Although the speed of
the oncoming compact car was relatively
slow, the impact caused the front end of
the Panamera to seemingly explode, and
it sustained what appeared to be major
damage. Fortunately, no one was injured,
and we were on our way within an hour.
Due to the diligence of our Treffen Master,
the Panamera was replaced with an
identical car by the next morning.
After lunch at the foot of the storybook
Neuschwanstein Castle, we continued
to Salzburg, checked into the Sheraton
Hotel and relaxed. That evening, we
enjoyed another delicious meal and
a Mozart musical performance at St.
Peter’s Keller, Europe’s oldest restaurant,
founded in 803. We read that none other
than Charlemagne himself dined at that
location. What history! What a treat!
On Monday, we enjoyed a 190-mile
leisurely drive through the lovely Austrian
countryside and an exhilarating drive over
the highest pass in the Alps, stopping for
lunch at a quaint, family-owned restaurant
at the foot of a mountain. There we dined
on venison and fresh trout that had been
caught that morning and placed in an
aquarium by the front door. Dessert
consisted of fresh pastry, and no one went
away hungry.
We continued
on to the village
of Gmund, home
of the original
Porsche factory.
We were provided
a tour of the small
wooden structure
that was the
gatehouse, office
and conference
room by the owner
and caretaker, Mr.
Helmut Pfeifhofer,
who controls
access to the building, which is now a
protected historical landmark. We were
surprised to find Ferdinand and Ferry
Porsche’s desk and chair still in place and
original drawings of a Porsche model
pinned on a draft board. It was a special
feeling to know that we were walking
through the administrative offices where
the first Porsches were born.
From the factory site, we continued a
short distance for a tour of Mr. Pfeifhofer’s
Our group stopped for lunch as we traveled over the highest pass in the Alps
Porsche’s humble beginnings in Gmund
private Porsche museum filled with a
number of special and limited edition
cars representing the history of Porsche.
There were also several different engines
on display and a large collection of model
cars, historical photographs and other
memorabilia. He receives no sponsorship
money from Porsche and has amassed
this wonderful collection on his own and
through contributions from friends and
patrons. His well-stocked goodie store
did a brisk business from our group that
afternoon.
That evening, we took a motor coach
to a 14th century Almhutte (farmhouse)
where we enjoyed a delicious meal cooked
over an open fire. As a light rain fell
outside, we were entertained by the tunes
of Sepp Nussbaumer playing the folkloric
Zither and reflected back on the wonderful
day it had been.
Tuesday brought another enjoyable
day of driving and the much anticipated
“photo rally” that covered about 100
miles. Each couple was given a book of
photos with questions to answer. Some
questions required that we spot the subject
of the photo as we drove and identify its
name and/or location. Others required
knowledge of local landmarks and
conversion of euros to dollars, liters to
gallons or feet to meters. Our route took
us through quaint villages and picturesque
countryside. During our drive, we
encountered low clouds and a light rain
followed by beautiful blue skies. The
scenery and vistas were simply spectacular
and made it difficult to concentrate on our
task at hand.
A Treffen To Remember - Continued from Page 11
Susan & David Stone
At the end of the
tour, we stopped for an
exquisite lunch at the
Schloss Fuschl, a lovely
castle converted to a
5-star hotel. Our tables
overlooked a beautiful
lake, and the service
was impeccable. After
turning in our score
sheets from the rally, we
returned to the hotel for
a horse-drawn carriage
ride around Salzburg.
Two carriages were
provided, and somehow
Steve and Julie had one
to themselves. Perhaps
Steve arranged that? At Randy & Sue Kinsling
tour’s end, we spent time
walking the city in a light rain with umbrellas
provided by the hotel. That evening, we dined
at our hotel as a group and received “valuable
prizes” for our performance in the rally that day.
Ample quantities of beer and wine, a wonderful
meal and lots of laughs made for a great time.
Wednesday brought our last day with
the cars and a full day of driving (330 miles)
on the Autobahn and country roads to the
medieval walled village of Rothenburg. There
we had lunch together at Reichskuchenmeister
Restaurant, another family-owned
establishment, before strolling this remarkable
town now known for its fine shops that draw
many tourists, especially during the Christmas
season. We walked on the famous wall that
once protected the village from its enemies and
marveled at the well-maintained buildings and
cobblestone streets. Everyone agreed that we
could spend days exploring this lovely place.
Leaving Rothenburg, we headed back to
Stuttgart on the Autobahn with more sections of
unlimited speed. With normal traffic and trucks
on the road this day, driving at faster speeds
was a real challenge as cars constantly pulled
out into the fast lane unexpectedly from behind
slow-moving trucks. Needless to say, we did not
see150 mph on this drive.
That evening, we dined at the Rathauskeller
Restaurant in Stuttgart’s City Hall. This
contemporary eatery provided us with a
delicious bounty of local cuisine along with
unlimited wine and beer. Tonight we met the
members of the Mini-
Treffen that was to begin
the next day and shared
with them our many
wonderful experiences.
In next month’s “Der
Auspuff,” the conclusion
of our Treffen adventure.
Nine Porsches and 18 R.U.F.-fians
challenged the weather gods and
met in the Santa Barbara Sears
parking lot the morning of June 16th.
The day began with a fine drizzle, but by
the time we departed, the air was dry and
the sky was filled with the typical “June
Gloom” overcast. Actually, fine weather
for driving at mid-60s Fahrenheit. The
destination was Avila Beach and Fat Cat’s
Café for lunch.
On the San Marcos Pass highway
(154), we were greeted by a California
Highway Patrol cruiser with an easily
spotted radar gun. Our intrepid group of
Porsches throttled down to speed limit,
disappointing the CHP officer, no doubt.
Minutes later, we found CHP cars on
both sides of the highway. We assumed it
was a filming location, since there were
a plethora of film crew trucks parked on
the shoulder. My radar detector was really
busy in the next few minutes.
Passing Los Olivos, we turned on
Foxen Canyon Road. Here we found the
14
serenity of back roads with very little
traffic. Foxen Canyon Road has fairly
smooth, level driving with well -marked
curves. Many of our Porsches have
tiptronic transmissions, and a few of us
had the opportunity to try the manual
mode. As someone who usually drives
a 6-speed, I thoroughly enjoyed this
two-pedal experience in my wife Terry’s
Cayman.
As to the scenery, it did not disappoint.
We passed by verdant pastures, rolling
hills, tiny towns and many wineries that
are a trademark of Central California.
Back to the 101, our route went through
Pismo Beach with a view of the muted
ocean beneath the gray cloud cover. The
road to Avila Beach reminded me of the
East Coast. An old green metal bridge
crossed over the road and seemed to
disappear into a lush forest.
Finally we reached Avila Beach with
its long pier that stretches to the horizon.
Parking at Fat Cat’s Café was easy, and
there was a table area outside. The food
was indeed appreciated after our long
drive and the portions were HUGE! That’s
R.U.F.-ing It In Avila Beach
The R.U.F.-ians at Fat Cat’s Café in Avila Beach
why they call it FAT Cat’s Café. No skinny
cats here! Nick had Eggs Benedict with a
slab of ham the thickness of a performance
tire! (It looked delicious in spite of my
analogy.) Terry had fish and chips and she
confessed that they were the best she’d ever
had!
The bonus of these adventures is
the camaraderie with our R.U.F. group.
Bill Wilson and I compared our driving
experiences with our identical Caymans.
Nick told us about his future trip to
Greece. And Mike Turek reminded me of
the crazy Honda driver that had to blast
ahead of our group only to slow down for
traffic.
This was a relaxed trip, one that is
enjoyable with friends. Thanks to Nick
Liakas, Mike Turek, John Shutt and
Barbara Oldfield, Kris & Don Galloway,
Corwin and Trent Toyoma, Bill Wilson
and Howard Park, Mary Anne Pare, plus
to my wife Terry, for allowing me to drive
her Cayman. =
El Camino Real, Jr.
The Gimmick Rally
By Phil Reese
When Linda and I started putting together the Santa
Barbara Region Gimmick Rally for this year, the
idea was to create a nice tour of Ventura County’s
back roads, agricultural areas, and small towns.
But when we finished, we didn’t expect to get to know so much
about so many of the club’s members.
For example, did you know that more than two dozen of your
fellow members know that the City of Moorpark has a population
of 37,086 people, but also think that the city is 513 ft. up in the
air?
And did you realize that there are at least 30 SBR folks who
think their speedometers read 32 mph when their Porsches are
stopped?
And can you believe that there are over 20 of the Santa
Barbara Region Porsche drivers that don’t realize a new 911
comes with a steering wheel?
And practically none of your fellow PCA’ers, who ran the El
Camino Real, Jr. on June 25th, know how to put a giraffe in a
refrigerator.
I could go on and on, but what we can be sure of about the
region’s members is that they all seem to really like coffee and
sweet rolls in the morning and barbecue for lunch. Of these, we
had more than plenty.
The day was perfect, and every single one of the Porsches was
shiny. And afterwards, quite a few couples thought it important
to state that they were still talking to each other after 79 miles of
At the driver’s meeting, Rallymaster Phil Reese (in blue & white
jacket ) explains what a “gimmick rally” is all about. We should
have been paying closer attention, or at least taking notes.
lollygagging around the countryside, looking for all sorts of odd
things by the road, and wondering, “What the heck do they mean
by that?”
And to top it off, many of our fellow regional “economists”
seem to think that “what comes next after a trillion” is a
quadrillion, not “a trillion-and-one.” Geez, maybe they could
work in Washington.
Well, out of about 60 answerable questions, “Cool-Hand”
David Stone and his navigator, Susan, got 53 of them correct, for
a decisive first place win. Newcomers Mike & Robin McConnell,
who admitted at the start they had no idea what a rally was (a
clear advantage as it turned out) grabbed second place with 46
correct answers. Third, with 43, and after a tie-breaking question
Phil & Linda Reese
We are the champions...(l-r) Third place finishers Gary & Phyllis Weaver; second place finishers Robin & Mike McConnell;
and the El Camino Real, Jr. Gimmick Rally Champions Susan & David Stone.
closest answer of 4 to “how many bridges did you cross on the
route?,” were Gary & Phyllis Weaver (against the correct answer
of 16 bridges crossed!). Should we wonder if the PCA SBR drivers
pay attention to anything along the road but their Porsches and
their tachometers?
We did learn that this year’s Gimmick Rally was William &
Diane Griswold’s first driving event since becoming members. We
truly hope they try a second one.
And our thanks to The Auto Gallery for sponsorship of the
breakfast at the start and the trophies at the end.
By the way, the part common to, and interchangeable among,
all cars since the 1940s is the Schrader valve, which is in every
car tire’s valve stem. You know, the thing under the valve cap that
has the little prong you push in to let the air out of the tire? Just
thought you’d like to know. =
Photos by John Alfenito
The reckoning...Phil Reese (at left) goes over the correct answers to our 60+ question rally quiz. Who knew that in order to put an
elephant into a refrigerator, first you had to take out the giraffe? Or that Tennessee and Missouri both border on eight other states?
Well, they do...and it was important to know it.
Promise yourself:
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
A Trip To The 100th Indianapolis 500 With Andy Granatelli
At The Indy With Andy
By Suzi Sheller
All it took was a tip in the Editor’s column of the
Montecito Journal, an email, and we hooked up with
Andy Granatelli for the trip of a lifetime. We were
going to the 100th Anniversary of the Indy 500 with
88-year-old Mr. 500 himself!
Our Gulfstream Jet - the only way to fly
Thursday morning, May 26, we boarded a private Gulfstream
jet with 11 other friends of Andy and a crew of three for the
flight to Indiana. Our friends were right – we never want to fly
commercial again. We were met at the airport in Indy by Andy,
his family, and his assigned police escort, loaded into vans
and police cars and whisked away to the speedway with sirens
blaring and lights blazing. We were scheduled for 180 mph rides
with Mario Andretti in the two-seater Indy cars. Suited up, with
the first four ladies in the cars, the light drizzle turned into a
downpour and we were rained out. Everyone was disappointed,
but Bob and I have since gotten a raincheck and were offered a
second chance June 28.
Then, it was on to the
Auto Racing Hall of Fame
Induction Ceremony
banquet in downtown
Indianapolis, where
we were surrounded
by such great racers as
Parnelli Jones, the Unsers,
Emerson Fittipaldi, Dan
Gurney, Benny Parsons,
Arie Luyendyk, and
so many more racing
Mr. 500 - Andy Granatelli
legends. All of this in just
the first day!
The next 3 days were packed with great food and drink; a
congenial and often hilarious group dynamic; wonderful sessions
with Andy and his brother Vince reminiscing about their early
days in car development and racing; and, of course, experiences
at Indy unavailable to the general public but open to us because of
the respect Andy is accorded in Indy.
We enjoyed access to:
• The Andretti garage (the Granatellis won their first 500 in
1969 with Mario driving)
• The vault at the Hall of Fame Museum featuring cars rarely on
display
• A 360 degree view of the track from a suite in the Pagoda for
the Indy Lights race
• A tour of the control room where one man monitors all track
action on 24 video screens
• Front-row center seats at the drivers’ meeting conducted by Al
Unser, Jr.
• Tower 4 suite and refreshments for the 500 race
• Police escort and squad car rides everywhere we went
On Sunday, after watching 180 laps of the race, we beat the
traffic (over 300,000 fans trying to leave through one exit) by
leaving for the airport at 2:15. Yes, we missed the exciting finish!
Thanking Andy and giving him a kiss goodbye (he is Italian,
after all), we boarded our jet for home. Once in the air, the pilot
announced the race winner, we were served dinner, and almost
everyone fell asleep in their plush leather seats. Bob and I couldn’t
sleep - we didn’t want to miss a single minute of this adventure.
We arrived in Santa Barbara at 4:10 our time, where our cars were
waiting, trunks open for our luggage, and disembarked. After four
days of VIP treatment, where we couldn’t raise a finger or spend a
dime, it was a real let-down to be back in the real world.
Not only is Andy Granatelli a living legend, he is a warm and
generous gentleman. We are indebted to him for allowing us to
accompany him and be part of his family on this historic 100th
anniversary trip, and we salute him with his signature email signoff,
sempre amore, Andy! =
Hal Jandorf’s Cayman S headed for the mountains
Hal and his Porsche at the observatory
Terry Jandorf and her Cayman S
Jandorfs Star in
Porsche Performance
Television Series On
By Hal Jandorf
Several months ago, Bill Sampson announced that a filming
company was interested in people who use their Porsches
for unusual purposes. I thought of our Caymans, which
double as portable “observatory” transports, driving my
telescopes to remote observation sites in the mountains. “Why
not combine performance driving with astronomy,” I said. The
roads in the mountains are spectacular and I am an astronomer
(I teach astronomy at Moorpark College and Los Angeles
Valley College.) So the production company (Robert Dalrymple
Productions) signed us up!
The filming turned out to be a major production, 12 hours
of driving, interviews, and setting up and breaking down my
telescope dozens of times, at our home in Thousand Oaks and at
the Moorpark College Observatory. Since we each have a Cayman
S, Terry and I were both interviewed.
There were six crew members and a tremendous amount of
photographic gear. Everybody was very friendly and helpful. On
the road, they had me driving just inches behind the camera car
several times along the smooth roads of Moorpark. The last few
shots were taken during a beautiful sunset at the observatory. Just
as we packed up, it started to rain!
I finally viewed the finished cut. It contains about seven
minutes of professionally edited interviews, driving shots and
telescope set-up scenes. Our segment is the final one on the
show (it must be because it’s the best, right?). Terry and I were
impressed and pleased with the result. The other segments are
about a surfer (using a Cayman to transport), a professional
singer driving a Panamera, a Porsche race driver/car collector, a
long distance (cross country) drive in a 1985 911, and us!
I hope you have some time to view this 30-minute Porsche
show on Speed Channel. I will get a copy to share at one of the
Santa Barbara breakfasts. I think you’ll enjoy it like we did!
If you can’t wait, or if you missed its original TV airing in
June, here is the link: http://www.bryanrobertseditor.com/
