4 President’s Column Bill Sampson The smoke has barely subsided from the July 4th celebrations and it is time to compose my August column. We have one busy club. That is a good, make that a great, thing. Hal & Terry Jandorf, fresh from their starring roles on the Speed Channel, will lead us once again on a stargazing trip on August 6. We will be at the very tall Mt. Piños on a very dark night enabling us to view our universe through telescopes provided by Hal and some of his friends. Bring your alternate vehicle to Camarillo in the morning, take a nap, and join us in the early evening in Frazier Park. See our website to sign up. After bringing your skateboard or other alternative vehicle to the Santa Barbara breakfast on August 13, treat your Porsche to a professional inspection and yourself to some refreshments, all at no charge, courtesy of our friends at Rusnak Porsche Westlake. Member Appreciation Day is a benefit just for our club. See page 6 for more information. The Progressive Dinner scheduled for August 27 is sold out. That is a good object lesson in the benefit of signing up early for club events. Activities Chairs Ted Lighthizer and Doreen Pankow report that there may be some openings to those on the wait list. Contact them if you’d like to be included. If you were slower than you wished, or, even if you set a new personal best at the July 31 autocross that will be history by the time you hold this publication in your eager hands, the club will furnish you another chance to prove your car handling skills at the September 17 autocross in Camarillo. See page 25 to sign up. Help, whether you drive or not, is always welcomed. Jeff Merrick and Jeff Parker always pitch in, as does very busy Activities Co- Chair Ted Lighthizer. Dan Byers and Martin Keller co-chair our five autocrosses this year. Driving in accordance with the California Vehicle Code will be offered during the September 25 run to the infamous location of the death of 1950s icon James Dean at the intersection of Highways 41 and 46 near Cholame. Kent Bodin will lead us on a trip to one of California’s more remote locales to commemorate the well known actor and Porsche racer. Wine tasting and an optional overnight stay in a local hotel are offered. See page 18. As I write, I ponder, along with most Southern California motorists, “Carmageddon” on Interstate 405. Let’s hope traffic has cleared in time for you to read this magazine. I do know that the same day some of you will have become more adept at car detailing in preparation for the concours and some will have taken the extra step of being certified as judges. Put your knowledge to work at the October 9 concours. See page 15 for more information on the concours. Also, there will be a preconcours “Detail Clinic” on September 10 at Lavaggio (page 19). Since a winery tour will be included in the James Dean run, the planned October Harvest Tour has been postponed to 2012. It will sell out whenever we schedule it, so look for it next year. We are truly blessed in this club to have many members step forward to help make us the success that we are. The nominating committee of Mike Hodson, Janice Herndon and Nick Liakas has assembled a proposed slate of both elected and appointed board members that is very strong and is nearly complete. Nick has served as chair of and driving force behind our R.U.F. group since 2005. He will “retire” from this position at the end of 2011. Those of you who have enjoyed (or who plan to enjoy) the monthly outings of this group should seriously consider becoming the chairperson of it. Yes, it will take some of your time. Your donation of that time and effort will assure R.U.F.’s continued existence. Without a chairperson the group and the outings will cease. Please let the nominating committee or me know of your interest and qualifications. The club sends its sincere condolences to member (and Der Auspuff printer) Mike Pomerantz, who lost his wife Adri to cancer on July 3. During composition of this column I attempted to email a member, who shall remain nameless. I checked our up-to-date roster (thank you Janice Herndon) and located his email address. The email bounced. PLEASE, when your address, phone, or email change, go to the PCA web site www.pca.org, sign in, highlight “Membership,” then highlight “Member Services,” then click on “Member Record.” Follow the instructions to update any information that needs changing. Our local records will reflect the new information, which is a big help to club leadership. Please indulge me here; you’re all invited to the free “Woodies at the Beach” on August 20, 2011 at Santa Barbara City College. Those who bring pre-1973 cars (yes, Porsches, too) will be afforded display parking on the lawn as space permits. From The Editor’s Desk John Alfenito R ead all about driving a new 997 on the German Autobahn at speeds reaching 150 mph in this month’s edition. Three couples from our region went on a very memorable “Treffen” adventure. Part One of their story begins this month on page 10. If you’ve never tried a Gimmick Rally, hopefully Phil Reeese’s entertaining article on this year’s event will convince you to join us next year. Pam & I had a blast, with her driving and me “navigating.” We may not have scored well, but we didn’t get lost, so we’ve got that going for us. Bob Roe & Suzi Sheller went to the 100th Indianapolis 500 with Andy Granatelli. Read all about it on page 21.
