Hal Jandorf’s Cayman S headed for the mountains
Jandorfs Star in
Porsche Performance
Television Series On
By Hal Jandorf
Several months ago, Bill Sampson announced that a filming
company was interested in people who use their Porsches
for unusual purposes. I thought of our Caymans, which
double as portable “observatory” transports, driving my
telescopes to remote observation sites in the mountains. “Why
not combine performance driving with astronomy,” I said. The
roads in the mountains are spectacular and I am an astronomer
(I teach astronomy at Moorpark College and Los Angeles
Valley College.) So the production company (Robert Dalrymple
Productions) signed us up!
The filming turned out to be a major production, 12 hours
of driving, interviews, and setting up and breaking down my
telescope dozens of times, at our home in Thousand Oaks and at
the Moorpark College Observatory. Since we each have a Cayman
S, Terry and I were both interviewed.
There were six crew members and a tremendous amount of
photographic gear. Everybody was very friendly and helpful. On
the road, they had me driving just inches behind the camera car
several times along the smooth roads of Moorpark. The last few
shots were taken during a beautiful sunset at the observatory. Just
as we packed up, it started to rain!
I finally viewed the finished cut. It contains about seven
minutes of professionally edited interviews, driving shots and
telescope set-up scenes. Our segment is the final one on the
show (it must be because it’s the best, right?). Terry and I were
impressed and pleased with the result. The other segments are
about a surfer (using a Cayman to transport), a professional
singer driving a Panamera, a Porsche race driver/car collector, a
long distance (cross country) drive in a 1985 911, and us!
I hope you have some time to view this 30-minute Porsche
show on Speed Channel. I will get a copy to share at one of the
Santa Barbara breakfasts. I think you’ll enjoy it like we did!
