El Camino Real, Jr. The Gimmick Rally By Phil Reese When Linda and I started putting together the Santa Barbara Region Gimmick Rally for this year, the idea was to create a nice tour of Ventura County’s back roads, agricultural areas, and small towns. But when we finished, we didn’t expect to get to know so much about so many of the club’s members. For example, did you know that more than two dozen of your fellow members know that the City of Moorpark has a population of 37,086 people, but also think that the city is 513 ft. up in the air? And did you realize that there are at least 30 SBR folks who think their speedometers read 32 mph when their Porsches are stopped? And can you believe that there are over 20 of the Santa Barbara Region Porsche drivers that don’t realize a new 911 comes with a steering wheel? And practically none of your fellow PCA’ers, who ran the El Camino Real, Jr. on June 25th, know how to put a giraffe in a refrigerator. I could go on and on, but what we can be sure of about the region’s members is that they all seem to really like coffee and sweet rolls in the morning and barbecue for lunch. Of these, we had more than plenty. The day was perfect, and every single one of the Porsches was shiny. And afterwards, quite a few couples thought it important to state that they were still talking to each other after 79 miles of 16 August 2011 • Santa Barbara Region • Porsche Club of America • www.pcasb.org At the driver’s meeting, Rallymaster Phil Reese (in blue & white jacket ) explains what a “gimmick rally” is all about. We should have been paying closer attention, or at least taking notes. lollygagging around the countryside, looking for all sorts of odd things by the road, and wondering, “What the heck do they mean by that?” And to top it off, many of our fellow regional “economists” seem to think that “what comes next after a trillion” is a quadrillion, not “a trillion-and-one.” Geez, maybe they could work in Washington. Well, out of about 60 answerable questions, “Cool-Hand” David Stone and his navigator, Susan, got 53 of them correct, for a decisive first place win. Newcomers Mike & Robin McConnell, who admitted at the start they had no idea what a rally was (a clear advantage as it turned out) grabbed second place with 46 correct answers. Should we wonder if the PCA SBR drivers pay attention to anything along the road but their Porsches and their tachometers? We did learn that this year’s Gimmick Rally was William & Diane Griswold’s first driving event since becoming members. We truly hope they try a second one. And our thanks to The Auto Gallery for sponsorship of the breakfast at the start and the trophies at the end. By the way, the part common to, and interchangeable among, all cars since the 1940s is the Schrader valve, which is in every car tire’s valve stem. You know, the thing under the valve cap that has the little prong you push in to let the air out of the tire? Who knew that in order to put an elephant into a refrigerator, first you had to take out the giraffe? Or that Tennessee and Missouri both border on eight other states?
