striding across globe with right foot in Belgium, text: “L’Angleterre<br />

Champion du Droit Contre la Violence” Aot 1914; reverse: image of<br />

treaty, featuring 6 seals and signatures, “Traite de Londres Garantissant<br />

la Neutralite de la Belgique” and a quote from German Chancellor during<br />

an interview with the English ambassador Sir E. Goschen “for the word<br />

Neutrality for a scrap of paper Great Britain was going to make war”; the<br />

Treaty of London signed in 1839 gave Belgium autonomy and when Germany<br />

invaded in 1914 and treated the treaty as “a scrap of paper” Britain<br />
