Laburnum anagyroides. The great bulk of Ihe<br />
branch consists of sel:Ondary xylem and about 50<br />
growlh rings are present; the non-tonducling<br />
heartwood (1) is darker (han the surrounding<br />
sapwood 12). On the oUl.side a narro"",, darker<br />
layer (3) of back and secondary phloem is evidenl.<br />
Numerous radial rays transverse the wood and<br />
Ihe branch has split down one of (hese as Ihe<br />
wood dried our. NOte [he eccentric appearance: of<br />
Ihe wood; in life the narrower (split) side of Ihe<br />
branch corresponded 10 the lower surface of [he<br />
branch since the production of reaction (tension)<br />
wood thickened the upper side.<br />
