FROM
THE
Pit
By The
Editor
Here at Illinois Racer - we're excited, happy and
a bit depressed all wrapped into one - possibly
what's causing my high blood pressure of late .
HAPPY BECAUSE .. . As our magazine has pro :
grassed over the past 17 months we are reaching out
much farther than first expected and were getting
very happy response not only throughout Illinois but
from advertisers In Iowa, Kentucky and Indiana . Our
subscribers hole from all over the U . S. including
Canada, California, Florida, Pennsylvania .
Massachusetts, Vermont, and many more, making us
extremely happy !
EXCITED BECAUSE , .. Our big race for local racers
from every track in the midwest to be held on the mile
at Springfield in September has prompted calls and
letters from everywhere already, and people are in .
forming us of their interest to help pull this off for the
Illinois fans and racers alike .
DEPRESSED BECAUSE .. . There are still a certain
number of advertisers within our pages who make it
extremely difficult for us to keep in existence . We
honestly do work this magazine as a "sideline
shoestring" that costs a tremendous amount to
operate. We please ask that you do your best to meet
your promises and obligations and help keep us going
and our readers even happier .
DEPRESSED EVEN MORE .,, Because a number of
authorities on "Springfield Racing" have been trying
to discourage us, on our planned event on the mile .
We've been called stupid, crazy, ignorant and worse
for ever imagining such a deal, mostly because of the
extreme high cost of such a show and the past ex .
perience and failures in attendance and resulting
firsonical losses. This has been especially dishearten .
Ing. because of the simple fact that we definitely are
not wealthy promoters and we're relying totally on
what we really believe the Illinois "local" fans will
support and pay to see . MORE of their own people
"Racin''' on the "mile ." OUTLAW LATE MODELS and
STREET CARS for the largest one day purse for Illinois
Dirt Racers !
So maybe we can do it! Maybe we can't! But if
you come, YII guarantee you you'll see more topnotch,
beautiful late model machinery than you've
seen in one place in Illinois before, coupled with some
of the closest, fastest racing you ever dreamed of!
And if it means anything to you cr not, take in can .
siderotion a couple weeks ago at Nazareth, PA, on
the mile, where the Outlaw Late Models invaded and
reached speeds of 140 m .p .h ., breaking ail track
records, and besting even the championship dirt car
times by a whopping 3 seconds !
So keep you're eyes open here! CAUSE TRACK
IMPORTANT NOTICE! !
(Help us Out!)
Due to circumstances beyond our control, our National Late Model Dirt Track
Championships to be held on the mile at Springfield Fairgrounds has been officially
changed to September 25th . Although some of you may already be aware of
this . Since last months magazine, we'd like EVERYONE to mark this new dote on
their calendar. (See page 9 )
The response we've been getting on this race has been fantastic! We are getting
participants from tracks thru-out the state, and it looks like it's going to be a
real "Battle of Stars ." And with the size of purse involved it's possible for just your
"average racer" to go home that day with some "big dollars" in his pocket .
Remember, $5000 .00 to win - Late Model ; $700 .00 to win - Street Stock -
($200 .00 for last place - L .M ; $100 .00 for last place - S .S.) . 30 Cars both
features! !
This will be a race you don't want to miss!! But . . . they still don't think we can
get the fans to show . There's been some real fine racing on the mile again this
year and in years post, but the crowds have been staying away . USAC-ARCA
organizations, State Fair Races, World of Outlaw Sprints, Midgets . All very fine
shows - but no people! So few in fact, that another racing organization holding a
big race in July has elected to cancel because of this fact .
And naturally . . . with this type of response for such "top name racing," its only
obvious that it be felt by "Springfield" that our "local track" racers and fans, will
let us down in the some manner .
But "Illinois Racer" thinks different! And we NEED you to help us prove that
fact . We all pay our state taxes for the use of that track, so by all rights, we
deserve our own day to use it .
So tell all your friends - Bring your families - If we have a good turn out of
our racing fans, we'll get to do it again next year, and at the some time prove that
the Illinois racer and fan does still truly exist! ! !
P .S. You will not be sorry for attending this "Extra Ordinary" full day of racing of such
"family prices ." Besides a parade being planned - many door prizes and drawings -
special events and guests, and surprise drivers attending . You're all going to be in for
some fine racing and a real TREAT! !
Remember John Beauchamp ::
(Port II )
If you recall from last month's article . the late John Beauchamp, was definitely a tough man to beat on o
race track. He seemed to enjoy starting at the rear of the pack and delighted in "weeding" his way to the
front, usually in a smooth, but cautious manner . Though there were times when he'd do it, in just a few laps
it seems, to prove he could do it either way .
Al Baker (Kartville), owner of the cars John piloted these couple seasons of dominance, (1966 and the
start of 1967), says "John was easy on equipment . He kept the cars out of trouble, and very seldom complained.
If the car didn't handle quite right in a given night, he'd jut make up for it with his driving ability ." Al
does recall however, a few weeks in a row when John would come in after the race or "hot laps" complaining
of the brakes not working. The crew would check the problem time and time again but could find
nothing. So Al says "We'd just crawl under the car and act like we did some adjusting and John would go
back out and "run like crazy" and do just great, than come in saying it was better, when they actually hadn't
done anything at all . This kept up for quite a while until Al finally crawled in himself, and after a few "hot
laps" was startled to find he didn't have a bit of brake . Definitely making a believer out of him I It seems as
though the brakes weren't foiling until they were heating up after midway through the programs, thus mak .
ing the problem a bit harder to detect . After now brakes were installed all the way around, the rest of the
season turned out to be "a piece of coke . "
Al says "to have a good top racing organization takes a lot of teamwork, people who want to help work
day and night, a fat pocketbook, and more time than mot people hove, or are willing to give . in keeping a
racer going. It never seems to pay off financially, we won big at Peoria that first season, and won consistently
at a couple other tracks and still had a problem meeting expenses . Racing is just a hobby, even for the
'above average' racer, and the sooner they realize it, the more fun they'll have. -
The fun went out of it for Al, John, and crew when in 1967 on the way to a race, an accident with the car
and hauler took the life of their good friend William Brophy, who often accompanied them to the race track .
"We race for the fun of it," said Al . "And after that, the fun was gone and so were we ."
Van Allen Tradition Lives On At Santa F e
A bright yellow car and a Jorge number 6 . For nearly three
decade, they were synonymous in Chicagoland racing circles with
the name of Bill Van Allen .
And with good reason. During his driving career . Van Allen
claimed six track crowns at Santa Fe Speedway in Hinsdale, three
late model titles at Raceway Park in Blue Island and o championship
or the Kankakee Fairgrounds Speedway in Kankakee . He also prov.
ed outstanding at the old 87th Street Speedway in Chicago . where
the soh spoken competitor netted live season titles and the long
forgotten Manco Pork Speedway, where he was also the titleholder
twice .
From the late 1940. right on through the stam of the 1970, there
was hardly o race fan around who hodart seen Van Allen behind the
wheel of one of his sanitary creations - be it on old Ford coupe . a
little Nash Ramble, a Studebaker Hawk or Lark, a big Ford Galaxie
or a midsize Chevelle . He drove them all with expertise .
So revered was the often called "Little Bill," that when he suc
cumbed to cancer in 1973 . Some Fe retired his number and initiated
a championship race in his honor .
But IO years lour, a living memorial to the legend has emerg'
old of Santo Fe ,
Its his nephew, Errol Van Allen, who at 33 . is not too young to
remember the contribution, his uncle made to the soon of auto racing,
And it's for that reason that Errol . in the midst of a comeback in
the late model class this year . has revived the familiar number. as
well as the pain, job.
No stronger to the cloy action . Errol . of Downers Grove, began
his driving career in the sportsman class in 1977, switching to the
late model division the following year . Experiencing just minimal
success . in 1975 he finished fourth in points and was named the
"moss improved driver' in the class .
In 1976. however. Van Allen , number 61 suddenly disap .
peared from the racing scene .
"It was mostly money ." Errol says of his untimely retirement .
But a lot of things have changed . I'm married now and my wife
likes stock car racing .'Financially I'm much better off too ."
http://legacy.library.ucsf.edu/tid/ecb81b00/pdf
Van Allen's brother, "Honest Melvin" Van Allen, 35 . of Justice.
a longtime fixture in the sportsman class, naturally kept Errol s in
forest in the spore olive during his "off years ." But he admits that it
was his involvement with three-time late model kingpin Jim 0 Con
nor of Kankakee last season that really sparked his comeback .
Surprisingly, Errol says that the cost of maintaining a competitive
machine has not changed much since he last drove . "The
expense is just about the some . There, no more shopping at the
junkyords for pans, though, its all store be for now . "
yet, Van Allen does not feel that the advonced technology has
hurt the spore . it . mode the young guys more competitive right
away now without having to go through the growing pain, she older
guys had to . I think its been harder on the guys who hove been r crng
for a lot of years . though . "
Errol readily admits that it is much easier to go to a stock car
pons store to purchase a replacement pan than to cruise a
unkyard in search of the needed pan .
He feels that the' lighter. more delicate cars have also forced
drivers to change their driving habits . "I think the guys are more
cautious with their equipment now as a result of it . "
With an investment of approximately $15.000 in his 1993 Howe
Firebird . Errol estimates .that by the end of the season he will have
spent nearly $30 .000 . An expensive hobby to be sure . But Van Allen
contends that Santo Fes generous payoff Mips drivers recoup at
least pan of their cash outlay .
His car is ca-sponsored by Prime Materials of Bridgeview,
Carmen's East Avenue Lodge in Hogkins . Palos Auto Pans of Polo,
Hills and Ray's Trockside Service in Chicago . Ace wrenches on the
Flrebird this year are Tom Dzedcic, Tom Novock, Neil Howell . Bill
Laverty. Lou Lefrana and Van Allen 's wife . Kathy .
As for his switch in numbers, Errol says that watching visiting
drivers taking pan in the back's special shows lost season promp .
fed his inquiry into the status of the long retired numeral .
'I talked to Howard (7eidt, Santo Fe owner'promoter) at the
banquet last foil and asked him why he was telling driven use the
number 6 again . He said that they were just visiting drivers and it
hod been a long time, a lot of people had forgotten about my uncle .
I asked him if I could register the number and he said I could - I
wanted to preserve it . Not have someone else out there using it .'
Assessing his chances this year . Von Allen predicts a 'pretty
successful season. "
Although he has been winless in two outings thus for in 1983,
Errol says that M has already seen some improvement. On open.
ing night I was in with he slower qualifiers . But Sunday night I
qualified for the fast heat. I didn't finish shot good in the feature
but we we go, some chassis problems to work owl . Once we get
around thet I think we'll be right up there .
"I'm lust so happy to be back out there again . Doing what I
really like . ' odds she enthusiastic competitor .
"I feel alive again!"

The big winners in Kentuckiona this year have been
Columbus, Ind .'s Russ Petro, Bedford, Ind .'s John Gill
and Rain ,
After II straight rainouts, Clarksville Speedway
finally got their first full show in Saturday night, June
4 with no rain . Tony Albright won both late model
features with Evansville, Ind .'s Mark Cole setting fast
time, and finishing second .
Russ Petro led the first 20 laps at 1-65 Speedway on
May 6, before busting a quick change gear, and handing
the victory to NASCAR'S charging Charlie Glotz .
bach . Followed by Gerald Dixon, Steve Boley, Ohio's
Larry Detmors, and Bob Gullivan .
On May 13, Gerald Dixon lost a tire . Charlie Glotzbach
and Roy Godsey lost engines, and John Gill won
the 1-65 late feature on his very first visit . Gerald
Dixon's very efficient Speed Shop pit crew changed his
tire in time to finish second ahead of Steve Boley . Don
Fleetwood, & Jim Reddick .
On May 20, John Gill fought tooth and nail with Jim
Curry the entire 25 laps, but had to settle for second,
followed by Gerald Dixon, Russ Petro . and Steve
Raley .
On May 27, John Gill came back to win again at I-
65. 2 wins and a second in 3 appearances .
On May 15, Russ Petro won Lincoln Parks late model
feature . May 22 it was Ray Godsey, and on May 29
Bedford, Ind .'s John Gill .
May 29 found Russ Petro winning the special
Memorial Day Race at Ponderosa Speedway in Junction
City, Ky .
On May 14, Russ Petro bested 47 other late models
before a huge throng at Barren County Speedway in
Glasgow, Ky . Jeff Napper, Wayne Coakley, Kenny
Watson, and Mickey Williams completed the top S .
The top 3 drivers timed with .04 second for a very
competitive field .
After 2 straight weeks of rain, Jeff Napper bettered
his May 14 runner-up finish with a win on June 4
before a SRO crowd . 41 late models in the pits, 5
feature events, and the last checker still fell before 11
p .m . Sumner, Ill .'s Terry Messenger was second,
followed by Fats Coffey, Harry Underwood, and
Evansville's Rick Corneal .
Tom Helfrich won the Tri-State Speedway opener in
Haubstadt, Ind ., on May 22 over Illini Doug McComman,
Jeff Cone, Wayne Harris, and Kevin Claycomb .
USAC star, Ken Schrader swept the late model and
the sprint feature on May 29 for the first dual show
ASCOC All Star sprint feature Ken Jacobs, Jack
http://legacy.library.ucsf.edu/tid/ecb81b00/pdf
Hewitt, Kelley Kinser, and Andy Hillenburg followed
Schrader to the checker .
In the hardest fought, closest race I've seen this
year. Roger Long 8 Bob Pearce battled for 65 laps of
Macon, Ill., Speedway on May 26 before Pearce rolled
a tire and had to pit . Jim Harter . Dick Taylor, Rick
Stonridge and Ed Dixon challenged the flying former
from Oakwood, Ill ., the rest of the way to the checker
in a thrilling finish at Wayne Webb's fine Macon, Ill .,
Speedway .
Russ Petro has annihilated the field at Brownstown
Speedway this year, winning both features on May 30 .
Lopping all but 3 cars at least once in each feature .
Petro came back June 4 for an encore win . 4 wins in 4
races at Brownstown in 1983 . 10 wins at 5 different
tracks in only 13 appearances in 1983 for Russ Petro in
the powerful Fred King, Rayburn destroyer .
Terry Messenger was leading the June 5 feature at
Tri-State Speedway, when his steering broke, sending
him into the 3rd turn barrier, and out for the night .
Kevin Claycomb than went on to record the victory
over Rick Corneal .
On the July 4th weekend, Tri-State Speedway will
present The ASCOC Coca-Cola Sprint nationals on
Sunday and Monday. July 3 & 4 for a $25,000 purse .
Sunday evening will also feature the late models in a
Glasgow, Ky. will present The Campbell Chevrolet
Twin 25's for late models for a huge $7,500 purse . 4
drivers can each win over $900. $50 guaranteed each
starter in both features. Barren County will have
another huge purse on Saturday night, July 2 . with
$2,000 to the winner of the 35 lapper . Because of the
fabulous support shown by the fans so for this year,
Barren County Speedway is going to share it with the
drivers by increasing the purse to the top 5 drivers by
$100 to each positi6n . Each of the 20 starters in the A
steady Bourbonnais native Butch Kistner's 73 pts .
First Two Weeks At Fairbury, Competitive!
By Lorry Kniland s
After two weeks of running of Fairbury's American
Legion Speedway, the eight-cylinder division has seen a
steady Bob Line, a threatening Don Chandler, a speedy Denny
Carpenter, and a waiting Jack Tyne .
Line took the feature on opening night . passing Tom
Rients on the 12th lap for the top spot lust before Rients
tangled with cars he was lapping .
Chandler, fast qualifier at :15.54, nabbed second place .
Carpenter did not show up the first night, but Tyne did
- minus his new car, which still needs some pans .
Tyne will drive the Fosdick Poultry 911 until the latest
version of his 89 is together . The 98 mount will give him an
opportunity to pick up points in defense of his 1982 Fairbury
championship . And on opening night he got third in his heat
and fourth in the feature .
The next week, Carpenter towed in from Darlington .
Ind . and gave a late-lap driving lesson in the feature .
Chandler had taken off from a front-row starting position to
lead through 19 lops .
But a series of yellows kept the field bunched - and
after the last one, Carpenter used a high groove and
"longer straights" to rip past Chandler for the trophy .
Chandler lost power and slipped to fourth behind Line
and Rients. Rients had been fast qualifier at :14.49, with
Carpenter at :14.74 .
Above Tom Rients, Streator, Ill ., currently
Ist in points at Fairbury Speedway .
Bob Line holds down second, while Joe
Williams . Saybrook, above right, .is in
third. (Late Model Division)
Tyne found his drive for points rougher the second
night, getting hit hard while lining up for a heat and taking
several licks in the rear in the feature - including a lost-lap
whack that eliminated him about a hundred feet before the
checker .
Gary Eden and Billy Shoemaker have provided
fireworks in the six-cylinder class . with Eden winning the
feature on opening night and setting a new qualifications
mark of :15 .61 8 the next time out .
Shoemaker. second in the dash and his heat the first
night, won his heat the next Saturday over Fred Wahls, and
did the some in the feature . He led all the way despite being
challenged late by Wallis and Matt Melvin .
Racer Round-Up By Romer (Ca r
Tri-County Speedway
Tri-County Speedway in Mendota
is showing everyone who attends,
what a fine track it truly is . No high
speed "demolition derby" at this track ;
only good, clean, competitive auto racing
- the kind we all wish we could
find at every track .
The current track record is currently
held by Mike Salsman of
Princeton, who qualified May 20 with a
time of 17 :56. Eddie Bohlander of
Glasford sits at the top of the Street,
Stock point standings with 163 points
to date .
Racing in Mendota is every Friday
evening ; gates open at 5 p.m ., with
time trials at 6 p .m . and racing beginning
at 7 p .m. A special date to
remember is the big July 4th celebration
race when gates will open at 1 :30
p .m . Time trials will start at 3 p .m . and
the races will begin at 4 p .m . The
fairgrounds will also have a roast beef
dinner on the grounds that day, as well
as a fireworks display at dusk .
Another date to remember is July
28th, when Tri-County Speedway will
host the Busch Series races . This
should be another race that you won't
want to miss .
Bureau County Speedway
The Bureau County Speedway i n
Princeton has been plagued with rain problems
like so many other tracks across Illinois.
It seems like every time the green
flag falls, so . .does the rain! But Bureau
County has something that makes them
the envy of all the tracks ; and that is their
loyal race fans who pack that grandstand
every race program, rain or shine .
Eddie Bohlander, Glasford, again
dominates the Street Stock division in
Princeton . But Tom Hamburg, Dixon, and
Bob Teauseau, Spring Valley, have their
own ideas, and follow Bohlander by only
5 and 12 points respectively .
The Bomber Division at Bureau County
is currently being led by Jerry
Zurlienne, of Princeton . Unfortunately,
Zurlienne's racing wins are over for
awhile; his car was "claimed" following
the May 28 feature race in which he took
first place .
Future special race dates at Bureau
County Speedway include the Busch
Series race on June 30, and then the
track's mid-season championship race on
July 2. Other race dates and further information
may be obtained by contacting the
QUIPS
Sunday night racing at Quincy Raceways proved to be too
much our and tear on some racing machines and driven . A
dry slick track mode ordinary racing impossible and cautious
racing a must. Even after Promoter Albert Scan bladed the
track . it still refused to hold.
Several hord .running Lose Models of the Quincy track suf .
tared extensive damage in heat races and were unable to
repair for the features . Among them were John Miller . Keokuk,
Sonny Findling, Kirksville, and Bart Allen, Novinger . No injuries
were recorded .
Those late models who slipped and slid their way to victory
in the heats were Terry Gallaher, Hannibal ; Dick Crane .
Palmyra ; and Dick Schilt . Waterloo (la .) . Crone also powered
his '83 Camaro to the checkers in the Hard"s Trophy Dash,
Steve Froiso of Montrose came from behind to win the feature
event as he was lined up in the 3rd row and steadily moved for
word on the competition . Schiltz . a top NASCAR competitor
from the Iowa area, snatched the 2nd spot away from Crane,
while Ron Elbe of Augusta pursued and passed Terry Gallaher
of Hannibal for 3rd spot . Harley Harrelson of Brashear survived
to take 6th . Ivan Long of Pittsfield took a long awaited win in
the semi .
The Sportsman races were filled with fender-bender action
and several yeliow.lightt but Jim Roach . Keokuk made it o clean
sweep as he won-his heat, the TNT Trophy Dash . and the
feature event . Other heat winner were Henry Delonlay and
Mike Bowen, both of Quincy . Ron Monroe of Hamilton gained
At 5 :30 p .m . Monday night, as cars were in the process of
checking-in and the grandstand was filling up . a cold front mov .
ed in from the north and deposited a bucket full of rom on Quin .
cy Raceways . Within a half hour, however, the rain had stopped
and the skies returned to blue . Track personnel went to work
binding the track and than using the "dragon' on LP gas burner
which enabled them to dry the track sufficiently for the
Memorial Day races to get underway .
The track was in excellent condition - the best to date and
Late Models whirred around in record time . Heat winners were
KY set fast time in the Super Lot* Model Division with a time of
14 .690 . Jerry English was the winner in the first heat with Tony Wall
taking the second heat .
During the feature event it was Baker . English, Wall and Hay
battling for the lead . After several laps Baker and English had set
soil from the rest of the field and were on their own . This battle had
carried on for some ten laps . On the white flog lap with Baker
Leading, they both went into turn One and two Baker went in on
the low side and English on the high side . Coming out of one Baker s
