First Two Weeks At Fairbury, Competitive!
By Lorry Kniland s
After two weeks of running of Fairbury's American
Legion Speedway, the eight-cylinder division has seen a
steady Bob Line, a threatening Don Chandler, a speedy Denny
Carpenter, and a waiting Jack Tyne .
Line took the feature on opening night . passing Tom
Rients on the 12th lap for the top spot lust before Rients
tangled with cars he was lapping .
Chandler, fast qualifier at :15.54, nabbed second place .
Carpenter did not show up the first night, but Tyne did
- minus his new car, which still needs some pans .
Tyne will drive the Fosdick Poultry 911 until the latest
version of his 89 is together . The 98 mount will give him an
opportunity to pick up points in defense of his 1982 Fairbury
championship . And on opening night he got third in his heat
and fourth in the feature .
The next week, Carpenter towed in from Darlington .
Ind . and gave a late-lap driving lesson in the feature .
Chandler had taken off from a front-row starting position to
lead through 19 lops .
But a series of yellows kept the field bunched - and
after the last one, Carpenter used a high groove and
"longer straights" to rip past Chandler for the trophy .
Chandler lost power and slipped to fourth behind Line
and Rients. Rients had been fast qualifier at :14.49, with
Carpenter at :14.74 .
Above Tom Rients, Streator, Ill ., currently
Ist in points at Fairbury Speedway .
Bob Line holds down second, while Joe
Williams . Saybrook, above right, .is in
third. (Late Model Division)
Tyne found his drive for points rougher the second
night, getting hit hard while lining up for a heat and taking
several licks in the rear in the feature - including a lost-lap
whack that eliminated him about a hundred feet before the
checker .
Gary Eden and Billy Shoemaker have provided
fireworks in the six-cylinder class . with Eden winning the
feature on opening night and setting a new qualifications
mark of :15 .61 8 the next time out .
Shoemaker. second in the dash and his heat the first
night, won his heat the next Saturday over Fred Wahls, and
did the some in the feature . He led all the way despite being
challenged late by Wallis and Matt Melvin .
