USAC-ARCA Race At State Fairground s<br />

Springfield . Ill . - Defending USAC Stock cham .<br />

pion Dean Roper overtook ARCA driver Bobby Jocks<br />

and went on to win the co-sanctioned ARCA-USAC<br />

Texaco-Lomax Piggyback American 100 Sunday afternoon<br />

at Illinois State Fairgrounds .<br />

Jacks finished second on the one-mile dirt oval<br />

ahead of Rick O'Brien and Terry Pearson, all completing<br />

100 laps . Jerry Churchill was fifth, one lap off<br />

the pace .<br />

Roper, who has competed in selected NASCAR<br />

Winston Cup and ARCA superspeedwoy events thus<br />

for this season, is in search of his third consecutive<br />

USAC Stock Car championship . The 43-year-old Fair<br />

Grove, Missouri driver is part of the Pontiac stable<br />

owned and maintained by Jerry and Tom Mueller of<br />

Random Lake . Wisconsin .<br />

Jacks set fast time with a speed of 101 .272 mph<br />

and showed his strength on the dirt over the first half<br />

of the event behind the wheel of 4he Combined Racing<br />

Cutlass .<br />

Rick Hampton finished sixth with 1980 ARCA<br />

champion Bob Dotter seventh . Butch Garner, Duane<br />

Pierson and Tracy Read rounded out the top 10 .<br />

A number of the top qualifiers were eliminated<br />

early in the race by accidents, including Bill Venturini,<br />

Bay Darnell and Joe Wallace .<br />
