QUIPS Sunday night racing at Quincy Raceways proved to be too much our and tear on some racing machines and driven . A dry slick track mode ordinary racing impossible and cautious racing a must. Crone also powered his '83 Camaro to the checkers in the Hard"s Trophy Dash, Steve Froiso of Montrose came from behind to win the feature event as he was lined up in the 3rd row and steadily moved for word on the competition . Schiltz . a top NASCAR competitor from the Iowa area, snatched the 2nd spot away from Crane, while Ron Elbe of Augusta pursued and passed Terry Gallaher of Hannibal for 3rd spot . Harley Harrelson of Brashear survived to take 6th . Ivan Long of Pittsfield took a long awaited win in the semi . The Sportsman races were filled with fender-bender action and several yeliow.lightt but Jim Roach . Keokuk made it o clean sweep as he won-his heat, the TNT Trophy Dash . and the feature event . Other heat winner were Henry Delonlay and Mike Bowen, both of Quincy . Ron Monroe of Hamilton gained the advantage on Bowen to take 2nd and Bob Ellis of Limo out . distanced Charlie Baker, Hannibal for 4th . Newberry also won the feature with Scott Bore of Quincy taking 2nd in the hometown favorite - little green Mazda rotary engine . Ed Huddleston and Randy Reed both of Quincy diced it up, but Huddleston nailed 3rd . Memorial Day Racing (May 20 ) At 5 :30 p .m . Monday night, as cars were in the process of checking-in and the grandstand was filling up . a cold front mov . ed in from the north and deposited a bucket full of rom on Quin . cy Raceways . Within a half hour, however, the rain had stopped and the skies returned to blue . Track personnel went to work binding the track and than using the "dragon' on LP gas burner which enabled them to dry the track sufficiently for the Memorial Day races to get underway . The track was in excellent condition - the best to date and Late Models whirred around in record time . Heat winners were Roger Dolan . Lisbon, to . : Dan Dickey . Packwood, Ia . . and Dick Crane, Palmyra . Mo . Crane also took the checkers in the hard . fought Hard" 's Trophy Dash . Steve Froise of Montrose, having had bad luck in the heat did win the semi from Dick Schiln of Waterloo, Ia . Dolan made his bid in the first Late Model 35 lop feature, but suffered a flat tire in the second feature . Schiltz powered his race machine to a 2nd place in the first event and top spot in the second . Sonny Findling of Kirksville snagged two thirds char having extensive damage done to his race car last night . Steve Praise of Montrose pulled from behind in 'soth features to take 4th in both, while Ron Elbe of Augusta and Terry Gol ier of Hannibal split the 5th spots . Dickey took a 6th in the first and 2nd in the second feature . Crone was the 6th place winner in the 2nd feature . Henry Dekonjoy and Ron Arnold of Quincy both were heat winners in the Sportsman class . Jim Roach of Canton on the TNT Trophy Dash, DeLonjay led the feature event for all but the lost 4 lops when Ron Monroe of Hamilton swept by and maim ,aimed his lend to the checkers . Roach took 3rd in a hair raising battle with Dennis McCoy of Hannibal , Lonnie Bailey . 18 year aid Quincy driver continues his bid to dominate the Roadrunner class by capturing his heat race and the feature in that class . Rod Webster of Lewistown also was a heat winner . Second spot fell to Jeff Klingele of Quincy . and 3rd went to Webster . Bruce Felker and Orville Owsley both of Quincy were heat winners in the Street Stock class . Aber on opening weekend of roinoun, the Late Models . and Sportsman returned to racing at 1 .57 Raceway in Benton, Illinois . With the season beginning on a holiday weekend . the pro* mofers asked the drivers it they wished to run a two day show . The drivers agreed and we rand both Sunday and Monday . This season got off to o slow start and some minor incidents : Bob Melvin Jr . while in the first session of hot lops took his brand new car through the fence in turn three and four . Bobby told us that his accelerator stuck open Defending track champion Jerry English was toking the track to qualify and ran over our source light for the timing device During the Sunday night show of May 29 Jerry English of Calvin City KY set fast time with o 11623 clocking . English had a rough time t . in the feature and finished second to Jim Hall of Charleston . MO . Hall who has mode several appearances of 1 .57 in both Late Models and Sprints cashed in on his first feature win here . Finishing behind Hall and English were Larry Walston of Paducah . KY Steve Ryon also of Paducah . former Track Champion Bill Hay of Sikeston MO and Gray Grief of Eldorado . IL . Heal ran winners for the opening night included in the Lose Models were Tony Wall of Lake City, KY and Chuck Still of Sunfield . Jerry English was the winner in the first heat with Tony Wall taking the second heat . During the feature event it was Baker . English, Wall and Hay battling for the lead . After several laps Baker and English had set soil from the rest of the field and were on their own . This battle had carried on for some ten laps . On the white flog lap with Baker Leading, they both went into turn One and two Baker went in on the low side and English on the high side . Coming out of one Baker s car had pushed towards the outside and this had allowed English to slip by and "Swipe' the feature win away from him . Congratulations to both drivers for a fine drive . One of the best this reporter has seen in some time . Jimmy 'The Pond Creek Bandit' Sloan of West Frankfort, drivmg the House Automotive Camaro . won his first Feature race here of .57 . Heat race winner included "Fast Fmnkie" Martin of Soser . IL, and Tim Tolbert of Cisne . IL . Before the story of the feature Gary Beattie and Fmnkie Martin were out with transmission troubles . With the two top qualifier . in the pin, this left Sloan and Darrell Little in the front now starting positions . After missing the stoning call, Dan McDaniel of Anna, started last in the thirteen car field and drove an excellent race to finish so . cad . Little was third .
