Aber on opening weekend of roinoun, the Late Models . and<br />

Sportsman returned to racing at 1 .57 Raceway in Benton, Illinois .<br />

With the season beginning on a holiday weekend . the pro*<br />

mofers asked the drivers it they wished to run a two day show . The<br />

drivers agreed and we rand both Sunday and Monday .<br />

This season got off to o slow start and some minor incidents :<br />

Bob Melvin Jr . while in the first session of hot lops took his brand<br />

new car through the fence in turn three and four . Bobby told us that<br />

his accelerator stuck open Defending track champion Jerry English<br />

was toking the track to qualify and ran over our source light for the<br />

timing device<br />

During the Sunday night show of May 29 Jerry English of<br />

Calvin City KY set fast time with o 11623 clocking . English had a<br />

rough time t . in the feature and finished second to Jim Hall of<br />

Charleston . MO . Hall who has mode several appearances of 1 .57 in<br />

both Late Models and Sprints cashed in on his first feature win here .<br />

Finishing behind Hall and English were Larry Walston of Paducah .<br />

KY Steve Ryon also of Paducah . former Track Champion Bill Hay of<br />

Sikeston MO and Gray Grief of Eldorado . IL .<br />

Heal ran winners for the opening night included in the Lose<br />

Models were Tony Wall of Lake City, KY and Chuck Still of Sunfield .<br />

<strong>In</strong> the Sportsman division defending rack champion Gary Beattie<br />

of West Frankfort started off his quest for a third consecutive<br />

championship by gaining the hot trick'' Fan time of 15 .916 won his<br />

heat and featur e<br />

After selling in with fast time Beattie had to contend with<br />

''Fast Franke Martin of Sesser IL for the top spot in the opening<br />

heat race When the checkered flog fell it was Beattie by ih o<br />

BUMPER I f Second heat honors went to Darryl Spiller of Herrin, IL .<br />

Darryl has been out of racing for a year and has come bock on a fine<br />

note<br />

As mentioned before Gary Beanie won his first feature of the<br />

1987 season Franke Martin finished second . Dan McDaniel of An<br />

no IL Richard Baker of DuOvain . Jerry Bruce of Benton : and Bob<br />

Britton of Benton rounding out the top six places .<br />

On the Monday Memorial Day show . Robert Baker of Benton,<br />

KY set fast time in the Super Lot* Model Division with a time of<br />

14 .690 . Jerry English was the winner in the first heat with Tony Wall<br />

taking the second heat .<br />

During the feature event it was Baker . English, Wall and Hay<br />

battling for the lead . After several laps Baker and English had set<br />

soil from the rest of the field and were on their own . This battle had<br />

carried on for some ten laps . On the white flog lap with Baker<br />

Leading, they both went into turn One and two Baker went in on<br />

the low side and English on the high side . Coming out of one Baker s<br />

car had pushed towards the outside and this had allowed English to<br />

slip by and "Swipe' the feature win away from him .<br />

Congratulations to both drivers for a fine drive . One of the best<br />

this reporter has seen in some time .<br />

Jimmy 'The Pond Creek Bandit' Sloan of West Frankfort, drivmg<br />

the House Automotive Camaro . won his first Feature race here<br />

of .57 .<br />

Heat race winner included "Fast Fmnkie" Martin of Soser . IL,<br />

and Tim Tolbert of Cisne . IL .<br />

Before the story of the feature Gary Beattie and Fmnkie Martin<br />

were out with transmission troubles . With the two top qualifier . in<br />

the pin, this left Sloan and Darrell Little in the front now starting<br />

positions .<br />

After missing the stoning call, Dan McDaniel of Anna, started<br />

last in the thirteen car field and drove an excellent race to finish so .<br />

cad . Little was third . Jerry Muce of Benton, Dole Brack of Benton .<br />

and Bob Diets of Murray . KY wound out the top six .<br />
