Kenny Schrader of Fenton, Mo ., took the<br />

opening Late Model stock car race of the<br />

"Busch" 1983 series at the Tri-City Speedway<br />

in Granite City, Ill . Thursday night, May 19th<br />

on a very smooth '/, mile dirt track . Schroder<br />

set a new track record of 23 .945 seconds for<br />

the "Busch" Series in his 1983 Mustang, Stop<br />

& Go, Goodyear sponsored car. Schrader<br />

started 1st row outside of very fast Mike<br />

Wallace of Arnold, Mo ., in his 1983 Firebird .<br />

Wallace and Schrader bottled for the lit lap<br />

lead with Schrader taking 1st spot and<br />

Wallace, Ed Dixon of Washington, Mo ., Ed<br />

Kneebie of Jefferson City, Mo ., and Gary<br />

Webb of Davenport, Iowa, in hot pursuit .<br />

Ronnie Hoover of Fulton, Mo ., spun in turn<br />

No . 1 and backed into the light pole . Wallace<br />

clipped the outside guardrail in turn No . 3<br />

while trying to pass Schrader on lap No . 4 but<br />

later went out with engine problems on lap<br />

No .10 . Herb Shannon of Hanna City, Ill ., ran<br />

nose to tail with Schroder but had to settle<br />

for 2nd place with Gary Webb in 3rd .<br />

Schroder was met in victory lane by Miss<br />

Firebird No. 6 powered by a Don Kirn racing<br />

engine lost no time getting to the front as the<br />

green flog came out as Ed Dixon of<br />

Washington, Mo., was a constant threat<br />

along with Mike Cooksey of Centralia, Ill ., in<br />

the Union 76 Comoro. But there was no catching<br />

young Wallace as he drove the '/, mile<br />

dirt track, he made it a clean sweep by winning<br />

his heat race .<br />
