The forest fi res continue to be a major problem
and the cost of these disasters is staggering.
The unprecedented hot and stifl ing
weather continues, bringing with it more
and more problems. Local fl ora and fauna
have really struggled over the last few
months and the long term effect must be
devastating.
Harvesting of the different fruit continues in
the area and the local factories are working
at full stretch. Once all the peaches have
been processed, it will be time for the almonds
and of course the local vines will
have produced another year of fantastic
grapes.
Once again there are loads of fi estas in the
area during September, including those in
Albacete (7-17 th Sept), Molina de Segura,
Calasparra, Cehegín, Pliego (5-9 th Sept),
Cieza and Yecla. Calasparra celebrates its fi -
esta from 3 rd to 8 th September with bull running
in the mornings and bull fi ghts in the
evenings. The offi cial opening of the fi esta
will be on 2 nd September at the Sanctuary
Esperanza and the traditional pilgrimage to
the Sanctuary will be on 7 th September. It
is worth contacting the local tourist offi ce
a week before the fi esta begins to fi nd out
the local programme as no-one seems to
know what is going on until the last minute.
Don’t forget that many of the activities
do not start until late in the evening
and may well go on until the early hours.
If you have pets, it is an idea to keep them
inside during fi esta time as rockets can
go off any time from 6am until 2am and
many pets are frightened of loud bangs.
CEHEGÍN SCENE
From 8 - 14 th September, Cehegín celebrates
its Fiestas in honour of the Virgen de las
electro music festival, festival bands, religious
acts and more than 150 stalls at the
Fairground.
There will be many events throughout the
week culminating in a grand performance
at 10pm in the patio del Convento. The
Murcian group Maldita Nerea, recorded
Album for “Fácil” which established them
as one of the most important pop groups
in Spain. Tickets for this are 15€ if bought
in advance and 18€ if bought on the night.
During the week there will be more performances
by Sober. The concert is organised
by Rock Stars Produciones and Management
together with the Fiestas Department of the
Town Hall of Cehegín. Sober will present
their album ‘Morfología’ and all their previously
famous numbers. Ticket price is 12€
or 15€ if bought on the night.
Recent entertainment included the open-
ing speech and the election of the Queen of
the Fiestas on 25 th August and The Music
Bands Festival on 1 st September, a Concert
by the Chorus “Ciudad de Cehegín” and
the “Cehegín Musical Society” on 2 nd ,
The procession of the Virgen de las Maravillas
will be held on 10 th and 14 th September
and a Spanish Operetta, “Huertanos day”
on 12 th , together with a night Festival and
Cehegín. We will enjoy the scenery and at
this time of year, we may be lucky and experience
one of the most beautiful events of
the region, the rutting of the deer. This walk
is about 8km and is only an easy walk. It
should take approximately 3 hrs.
