at the same time comforting. One
experiences the luxurious touch and
feel, as may be expected from a four
star hotel everywhere. Every room is
equipped with the most modern technology.
Here, the Balta Broadloom
wall-to-wall carpet has a modern
and quiet pattern and creates a cosy
atmosphere.
Heart of the hotel
The showpiece of this hotel is ‘The
Twelve’, the restaurant than can seat
350 people inside the hotel and 60
more outside on the terrace.
The name of this restaurant refers to
the twelve stars of the European flag,
which obviously is a hint to its special
location. The bright lime colours
from the lobby make their appearance
again in the bar. The chairs are
turquoise and pink amongst other
colours. Still, thanks to the several
metre high windows the restaurant
gives a peaceful and airy impression.
Chef Jeroen Demuydt serves a modern,
international brasserie kitchen.
The terrace is inspired by a traditional
Moroccan ‘riad’ or courtyard and is
entirely surrounded by the hotel.
Especially on sunny days, this is an
ideal place to relax for a moment. The
courtyard literally is at the heart of
the hotel: from almost anywhere in
the hotel, visitors can see this terrace.

In the Thon Passage, underneath
the hotel, there is a shopping mall
of about 900 m 2 . A logical choice,
because parent company Thon Gruppen
in Norway mainly owns shopping
centres.
Playful pattern
Attention was of course devoted to
the business market as well. The
Thon Hotel EU comprises no less than
ten meeting rooms and all of these
are equipped with the most modern
conference techniques.
Every room is named after one of the
countries that were among the first
to become a member of the European
Union. The largest conference room,
not coincidentally called ‘Belgium’,
can be subdivided into three smaller
rooms. This makes it the perfect
space for gala dinners, conferences
and even wedding parties. A striking
element is the purple wall-to-wall
carpet that we often see in business
areas. The playful pattern gives the
rooms a special touch.
Even though the Thon Hotel EU is
part of a large hotel chain, every hotel
in the Thon group is conceived in a
different way. This depends in part
on the location. To illustrate this, we
refer to the new wing in the Thon Hotel
Opera in Oslo, which is the work
of the same interior designer, Trond
Ramsoskar, but emanates a totally
different atmosphere compared to the
one in Brussels. “This hotel is located
next to an opera house and that is
why we allude to this, even in the
rooms”, the designer clarifies. “The
lighting in Oslo has a very theatrical
touch and feel and behind the beds
there is a picture of ballet dancers.
This once again proves that even a
large hotel chain does not as a rule
have to offer uniformity, but can with
a little sense of adventure present
totally unique and very cosy hotels.”
In the future…
Even though the Thon Hotel EU
has opened its doors only some
months ago, Thon Hotels already
announced some new plans for
the future of the capital. In the
‘Bolwerkstraat’, there is the Thon
Hotel Brussels City Centre. This
is a hotel that will undergo a
dramatic redecoration later on
this year. Both the lobby and the
rooms get a total facelift. In a
