Policy Dialogue and Public Awareness<br />

● Joseph Intsiful from Ghana received the highest award for his presentation “Study of<br />

the Impact of Land Cover Change on Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Interactions" at<br />

the summer colloquium at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in<br />

Trieste, Italy.<br />

● Frank Mussgnug, a <strong>ZEF</strong> doctoral student and Robert Bosch Foundation scholar,<br />

received the Albrecht Thaer Prize from the Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture,<br />

Humboldt University, Berlin, awarded for the best diploma thesis and best student<br />

of the year 2000.<br />

The European Development Research Network (EUDN)<br />

Around one and a half years ago, in September 2000, the EUDN was established, with<br />

its secretariat being set up at <strong>ZEF</strong>. It is currently being supported by the Land<br />

Government of North Rhine-Westphalia. The network, which originally consisted of 17<br />

European development researchers, was extended by 13 members by official elections<br />

in 2001. A further expansion is envisaged for 2002. The idea of EUDN was to support<br />

EUDN in brief<br />

1999, December:<br />

● The Global Development Network (GDN) is inaugurated at the First<br />

Annual Global Development Conference in <strong>Bonn</strong>, Germany.<br />

2000, September:<br />

● The European Hub of the GDN is established at a round-table<br />

meeting at <strong>ZEF</strong> in <strong>Bonn</strong>, Germany.<br />

October:<br />

● The Executive Committee is elected with the secretariat being established<br />

at <strong>ZEF</strong>. Initial funding is provided by North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.<br />

December:<br />

● The existence of the Hub, called the European Development Research<br />

Network (EUDN), is officially announced at the Second Annual GDN<br />

conference in Tokyo, Japan.<br />

2001, October:<br />

● The first EUDN Workshop for doctoral students on development research<br />

is held in <strong>Bonn</strong>.<br />

December:<br />

● EUDN organises a session on “Understanding Reform" and participates in<br />

the knowledge fair at the Third Annual GDN Conference in Rio de Janeiro,<br />

Brazil.<br />

2002, March:<br />

● The first EUDN Member Workshop is held in Namur, Belgium.<br />

The Global Development<br />

Network (GDN) is an amalgamation<br />

of research institutes<br />

from all over the world. It has<br />

the objective of generating,<br />

sharing, and applying knowledge<br />

for development. EUDN is<br />

one of its Regional Networks.<br />
