2012 CORE STUDENT OF THE YEAR
ABENEZER KASSA
Senior, Methodist Children’s Home
Methodist Children's Home congratulates
Abenezer Kassa, who was selected
Student of the Year for 2012 by the
Coalition for Residential Education
(CORE). He received the award during
CORE's national conference March 7 in
Oklahoma City. As part of the award,
Abenezer received a $500 scholarship.
Abenezer was recognized for his personal
growth, leadership abilities and
community service.
As a senior at Rapoport Academy,
Abenezer maintained a 4.10 GPA in
high school while taking four additional
courses at McLennan Community
College, where he was named to the
Dean’s List.
In addition to academics, Abenezer
makes community service a priority.
He was selected to the Waco Youth
Leadership Council, where he spoke
at a national conference on important
issues among teenagers. He has
volunteered with the Waco Humane
Society, Caritas, Shepard’s Heart Food
Pantry, and Keep Waco Beautiful.
Abenezer is also involved in the Key
Club, which partners with other organizations
in the area to provide community
service.
MCH staff describe Abenezer as kind,
generous, helpful, conscientious and
humble. Abenezer encourages others
through his perpetual good mood,
smile and positive outlook on life.
Congratulations Abenezer!
“If it wasn’t for Methodist Children’s Home, I would not have been able to develop long-lasting
relationships with the people who work here. They are my family and have helped me grow and
develop to become the person I am right now. Therefore, I dedicate this honor to them.”
President’s Perspective
BY TIM BROWN
Throughout the 122-year history
of this ministry, there have been
many unique situations and circumstances
that have caused people
to develop opinions and perceptions
about what Methodist
Children’s Home does and does
not do, and why children are receiving
care from the agency.
Some of these perceptions are true. Others exist because MCH
has been fl exible enough to take risks and respond to crisis situations
and unusual needs that have placed individual children or
large numbers of children in harm’s way. Two specifi c instances
in our recent history occurred when we cared for the children
removed from the Branch Davidian Compound and the children
who were removed from the FLDS Yearning for Zion Ranch in
El Dorado, Texas.
This issue of Sunshine attempts to dispel 12 of the most common
myths and misperceptions about the Methodist Children’s Home.
I am not naïve enough to believe that this one issue of Sunshine
will clarify every myth or misperception. And, I am quite sure
there will continue to be some misperceptions. However, I do
hope we can dispel the myths that we still operate as an orphanage;
that we provide adoption services; that children can
be placed at MCH from anywhere in the United States (with or
without parental permission); that legal custody of all children in
care is taken by MCH; and that the children who come from the
“hard and diffi cult places in life” are “troubled” or “bad” kids.
These myths serve no good purpose.
Our mission is to offer hope to children, youth and families
through a nurturing, Christian community, and this happens in
many different ways. You can be of tremendous assistance to us
by clarifying for others who we are and what we do. If you will
read this issue cover-to-cover and share this information with
friends, United Methodist congregations and local referral services,
we can continue to expand our mission more effectively.
We are proud of the success we are having with children, youth
and families, as they work hard and make tremendous sacrifi ces
to reclaim hope in their lives and seize the opportunities for
health, progress and optimistic futures. We hope that you, too,
are comforted by our improving outcomes. Thank you for your
continued investment of support and prayers.
FACTS
The truth behind 12 common myths
about Methodist Children's Home

Methodist Children’s Home has offered hope
to hurting children and families for 122 years.
Throughout the history of this ministry, we
have adapted programs and services to meet the
changing needs of children, families and society.
Although these changes have enabled MCH to
serve children more effectively, some have led to
a variety of myths or misperceptions about our
ministry. We have identified the 12 most common
myths about Methodist Children’s Home,
and offer facts that will help answer important
questions about our ministry.
MCH is not
FACTS
an orphanage,
although it was founded as the
Northwest Texas Conference
Orphans Home in 1890 to
provide shelter, food and
safety for homeless children.
In its early years as an
orphanage, the children who
came into care often had
experienced the death of both
parents and did not have
relatives who could afford to
care for them. In some cases,
fathers brought their children
to the Home following the
death of their spouse so they
could continue to work during
times of fi nancial hardship.
The Home provided
custodial care for orphans
MYTHS VS. FACTS
Myth 1:
MCH is an orphanage.
Myth 2:
MCH only provides services in Waco.
While MCH was
FACTS
established in
Waco, we have extended the
impact of our ministry far
beyond Central Texas. MCH
has been blessed with a strong
heritage of providing quality
residential group care, foster
care and other services,
and we currently serve more
than 1,400 children and youth
across Texas and New Mexico.
MCH serves about 215
youth, ages 12-18, through our
three residential campuses.
The Waco campus is the location
where MCH was established
122 years ago, and it
has grown from the original
10 acre-site to 130 acres. The
500-acre Boys Ranch, located
10 miles northeast of Waco,
was established in 1971. MCH
opened a residential program
during its fi rst three decades.
From the 1930s to 1960s, the
Home experienced signifi cant
growth that began its transition
from an orphanage to a
nationally-respected child care
agency that provides a comprehensive
program of care.
The Home’s name has been
changed four times, and it
became Methodist Children’s
Home in 1996. In each case,
the name was changed to more
accurately communicate the
mission of this ministry.
MCH began to experience
a decrease in the number of
orphans by the 1950s, in large
part due to medical advances
that led to cures for life threatening
diseases or illnesses.
in Waxahachie on the campus
of Presbyterian Children’s
Homes and Services in 2009.
MCH began offering foster
care in 1968, and since that
time we have developed a variety
of family preservation services
through our Community
Services program. Realizing
the need to serve children and
families closer to their communities,
we began increasing
the number of outreach offi ces
in Texas and New Mexico in
the 1990s.
Today, MCH serves children
and families through
outreach offi ces in Abilene,
Corpus Christi, Dallas, El Paso,
Houston, Lubbock, Lufkin,
San Antonio, Tyler, Waco and
Albuquerque, NM. Our family
preservation services are
designed to reach out to fami-
During this time, MCH made
the transition from an orphanage
to a multi-service agency
that concentrated on meeting a
variety of physical, emotional,
educational and spiritual
needs of children.
While a few youth who
have lived at MCH in recent
years have faced the challenges
of dealing with the death of
both parents, all youth at MCH
are placed in our program by
parents or a managing conservator.
Although it was common
for MCH to take custody
of children during its days as
an orphanage, MCH no longer
takes custody of children or
youth in any program.
lies to intervene and offer support
to prevent the trauma
caused by abuse/neglect
and family separation. MCH
Myth 3:
MCH only admits “troubled kids”
and those who have legal problems.
About 10 percent
FACTS
of youth placed in
our residential programs have
minor legal issues or come to
MCH through a juvenile probation
placement.
The majority of youth who
come to MCH have suffered
from neglect, abuse, poverty,
school failure or broken relationships
with family members.
Some youth at MCH
were raised in safe and nurturing
home environments,
yet they made choices that
led them to seek assistance
through MCH. Nearly onehalf
of the youth in our care
Each year, we graduate more
than 40 high school seniors,
many of whom become the
advanced education through
college or vocational training.
Last year, 54 students
received academic honors and
29 earned a “commended”
score on the TAKS test.
MCH youth participate in
MCH offers opportunities
for youth to develop their faith
and understanding of God’s
love through relationships
with their staff, devotionals
in home units, worship services,
youth groups, mission
trips and special events. In
addition, MCH offers quality
education through charter
schools and a variety of
extracurricular activities,
such as FFA, athletics,
music lessons, off-campus
employment, summer
camps and community
service. Youth often
enjoy outings to sporting
events, movies, theme
in the Perkins Youth School
of Theology at Southern
Our youth often receive
recognition for their leadership,
volunteer service and
other contributions to MCH
and their community. Last
March, Abenezer, a senior
on our Waco campus, was
named Student of the Year for
the Coalition for Residential
organization supporting children’s
FACTS
Sunshine I Spring 2012
MCH accepts
youth for admis-
sion regardless of religious
beliefs or backgrounds.
More than 20 denominations
or religions are represented
among youth in our
residential programs, as well
as youth who identify themselves
as agnostic or atheist.
Thirty percent of youth identify
their religious background
as non-denominational, followed
by 17 percent who are
Myth 6:
Children can be
placed at MCH
from any state.
MCH is affi liated
FACTS
with the seven
United Methodist annual
conferences in Texas and New
Mexico. As a result of this
relationship, all youth placed
at MCH must have parents, or
a managing conservator, who
live in Texas or New Mexico.
All youth must go through
an admissions process for
our residential program. This
process begins with a phone
interview with the family. If
our admissions staff determines
that MCH can potentially
meet the needs of the
youth, they will schedule oncampus
interviews and work
with the family to complete
the application requirements.
Once the family submits
all admissions materials,
the information is presented
to the Intake Screening
Committee, which consists
Baptist and eight percent who
are United Methodist.
While spiritual development
and participation in
worship services and religious
education activities are integral
parts of our residential
program, youth are not
coerced into making personal
decisions regarding their faith
and spiritual development.
All worship services and
religious education programs
are conducted in accordance
of administrators, admissions
staff and school staff.
The Intake Committee considers
many factors when
determining if MCH can
meet the needs of a child. The
fi nal decision is often based
on multiple factors and can
include several visits with
the child and family before a
decision is made.
Committee members
work closely together and
weigh all options to make
the best decision for every
child. If the child is accepted
for placement and an opening
is available, a placement
date is set. If an opening is
not available, the child is
placed on a waiting list.
MCH serves about 215
youth, ages 12-18, on
three campuses. The prom
majority of children and youth
in our residential and foster
Currently, seven percent of
youth in our residential programs
and 40 percent of children
in our foster care pro-
gram are in conservatorship
of Child Protective Services.
Children and youth in CPS
conservatorship participate in
our full program of care.
In many cases, children
and youth are referred to
MCH by other agencies or
individuals; however, MCH is
not required to admit a child.
Except in the case of an emergency
placement, families or
All youth transitioning
from care at MCH to independent
Myth 9:
Children come to MCH when they’re
young and stay until they graduate.
Throughout MCH’s
FACTS
history, one of the
highlights for our supporters
was meeting young children
during campus visits, and then
following their progress as
they grew older and graduated
from high school. During the
Myth 10:
MCH provides
adoption services.
MCH offered
FACTS
adoptions for
many years, until leadership
decided in the early 1990s to
redirect resources to meet
greater needs through our
private foster care program
and community services.
In making its decision,
MCH determined that it
would not create a vacuum
in the adoption fi eld in Texas
due to the growing number
of adoption agencies, including
many church-related
agencies. During the time
we offered adoptions, MCH
found itself competing with
another Methodist agency,
the Methodist Mission Home
in San Antonio, which offers
adoptions. In fact, there is
Sunshine I Spring 2012
past decade, the demographics
of youth served through
our residential program have
changed signifi cantly. Today,
the average age of youth on our
residential campuses is 15.
In recent years, MCH
increased the minimum age
for admission for our residential
program to 12 and began
placing younger children in
our foster care program, where
they can benefi t from the
advantages of a small family
unit. However, MCH admits
children close to the age of 12
in such cases as an emergency
placement for safety reasons or
still some confusion today
about the connection
between the two ministries,
which are independent
agencies.
Another contributing
factor to MCH’s decision
to eliminate adoption
services was an
increase in the number
of unwed mothers who
were choosing to parent
their child, rather
than place them for
adoption. MCH’s decision
led to expansion of
outreach offi ces. Today,
MCH operates 11 offi ces
in Texas and New Mexico.
The average length of stay
has changed signifi cantly as
A journey of faith and discovery
Donald comes from a large
family. However, his parents
were not around, leaving his
grandmother to raise him and
his siblings. It became too diffi
cult for her and she sought
help for her grandchildren.
“I came to Methodist
Children’s Home because I
had no other place to go,”
said Donald, a resident on the
Waxahachie campus.
Struggling with the change
and trying to fi nd a place
where he belonged, Donald
began attending youth activities
at First United Methodist
Church of Waxahachie as a
way to occupy his time. That’s
where he met Amanda Sargent,
director of children’s and youth
ministries at the church.
with First UMC to provide re-
ligious services and activities
for youth on its Waxahachie
campus. The church recognizes
MCH youth as members of
their congregation.
“In a time of need, Amanda
was there,” Donald said. “She
recognized that I was looking
for healing and she took me
under her wing. She’s been a
great role model for me.”
During the last two years,
Donald has grown closer to
God and built a strong friendship
with Amanda.
“Donald is an extraordinary
guy,” Sargent said. “He has
the ability to hear God and act
on what he hears.”
Through his growing relationship
with God, Donald has
discovered that he is where
God wants him to be.
“I feel like God led me to
this place to draw others to
Him,” Donald said. “Since I
began attending church and
youth group, I’ve been working
to become the person God
wants me to be.”
Donald has taken advantage
of many opportunities offered
by the church to grow as
a Christian. He is involved in
youth group, mission trips and
a homeless ministry. He recently
attended a national discipleship
conference for youth.
“During the retreat I felt
called to the front to praise
God,” Donald said. “It hit
home that I should be doing
that every day of my life.”
Donald enjoys his involvement
in the church, and he
said it’s not about just occupying
his time anymore.
“I wanted to be baptized so
MCH college student
MCH has 56 alumni attending
colleges or trade schools
across Texas. Meron works
full-time, attends McLennan
Community College and
maintains a 3.8 GPA. She will
graduate in August with an
associate’s degree in nursing.
Why did you decide to go
into nursing? I enjoy helping
people. When I was young, I
was involved with our church
and helping the poor. When
I came to MCH, I had the opportunity
to be involved in
community service. Nursing
was a good fit for me.
What are your career plans?
I would like to work with veterans.
While doing my rotation
at the Veteran’s Hospital,
I worked with soldiers. Their
sacrifices have really touched
me. I would like to get my
bachelor’s degree and join
the military as a travel nurse.
How has MCH helped you as
a young adult? I appreciate
being able to stay connected
to MCH as I have ventured
out on my own. My Transition
Services caseworker, Kathy
Don Grisham, social studies
teacher, planned the field trip.
“The trip gave students an
opportunity to see, touch and
walk around the area that we
studied in our class,” he said.
“It brought history to life for
them. They saw the sixth floor
Q& A
with our
Tyler Outreach Offi ce
We visited with Traci Wagner,
director of our Tyler outreach
office, and Cassie, one of our
foster children, about the importance
of family visits.
Traci, why is it important to
arrange visits between foster
children and their family?
Weekly visits, outings,
and celebrating special occasions
help children maintain
the bond to their parents
and preserve their sense
of belonging. It also helps
parents stay connected and
promotes responsibility
for their children. In cases
where children and families
cannot meet together, we
try to maintain connections
through letters, pictures, and
phone contact. It is important
that these relationships stay
intact and strengthen so that
the transition back home is
successful.
Cassie, how has your foster
family helped you? They support
and encourage me. They
have provided me a better
environment and given me
more opportunities. I am doing
well in school; I play the
clarinet in the band and have
great friends. I also appreciate
being able to stay connected
being in my foster home.
YOUTH PROFILE
While living at MCH,
Katt has gained a sense
of belonging and confi -
dence through positive
relationships and opportunities
to develop her
gifts and talents.
A place to call home
As a pre-teen, Katt traveled
from hotel to hotel with her
father and had no permanent
home since his job required
extensive travel. She had lost
her mother and was struggling
with the pain she felt. She began
acting out and making poor
choices to deal with her grief.
“About a year after my
mom passed away, it started to
affect me,” Katt said. “I began
to understand the reality that
I would never have a relationship
with my mom again.”
Going into her teen years,
Katt’s father was concerned
that she did not have a female
role model or a stable environment
in which to thrive. He
began looking at the possibility
of sending her to a home
12
for youth to fi nish high school.
Katt and her father learned
about Methodist Children’s
Home and decided to apply for
her admission.
“I wanted to come to MCH
because I wanted to have
friends and a real home environment,”
Katt said.
During the admissions process,
MCH determined that
the Waco campus was the best
program for Katt. At fi rst, she
was not sure about her new
residence, but she eventually
began to blossom.
“Katt was grateful to
have a consistent home,” said
Stephanie Scott, Katt’s unit
manager and caseworker. “She
was able to start a routine for
herself, and she appreciated
that because she’s naturally an
organized person.”
Katt occupied her time with
volunteer and extracurricular
activities to deal with her
pain. She joined mission trips,
began cheerleading, joined
the student leadership council,
and helped with concessions
for sports activities. In addition,
Katt volunteered to work
with children in the community.
Through her community
service efforts, Katt discovered
her passion for working with
special needs children.
“I love to work with kids,”
Katt said. “I want to be a special
education kindergarten
teacher. Special needs children
require attention and
they need to feel wanted and
loved by someone.”
According to Scott, Katt has
the personality and patience
that will enable her to work
effectively with children.
“Katt’s heart is really into
working with children and she
has an extremely social and
bubbly personality,” she said.
“I love that about her.”
Katt graduated from the
University of Texas Charter
School on the Waco campus in
June. She said she is excited
and nervous about the transition,
but she is thankful for her
experience at MCH.
“It defi nitely helped me to
come to the Home,” Katt said.
“MCH gives a lot of hope to
children, and I am happy to be
one of them.”
Albuquerque: Escaping domestic violence
Destiny was living in a domestic
violence situation. To her, it
did not seem possible to break
free. Her biggest obstacle to
getting out of the situation was
finding housing for herself and
her son, Hoyt.
Destiny was having trouble
securing a job, which meant
Marie was referred to MCH
by her children’s pediatrician
after her six-year-old daughter,
Grace, was diagnosed with
ADHD. Marie was worried because
she was not sure how to
care for a child with this condition.
In addition, she is trying
to provide for her three other
young children.
San Antonio: Keeping families together
Ms. Ruiz is a single mother
who has a teenage son living at
and their baby. Ms. Ruiz works
multiple jobs to support her
family. Recently, she lost one of
her jobs and it put a strain on
her family’s finances. Ms. Ruiz
turned to MCH for assistance in
seeking new employment.
Lorayanne Rivera, MCH
caseworker, gave Ms. Ruiz referrals
to multiple agencies in
the San Antonio area for finan-
Destiny’s MCH caseworker,
Alicia Carter, was able to locate
a housing program that would
meet the needs of Destiny and
her son. Due to the provision of
the housing program, the family
is living close to rent-free and
together to learn about ADHD
symptoms and medications,
and she started attended parenting
classes to learn how to
care for her family.
Rivas and Marie continued
to gather information about
ADHD from the internet, pediatricians,
hospitals and community
agencies. Through this
process, she learned about the
benefits of working with puz-
cial assistance and employment.
She also linked Ms. Ruiz
with the San Antonio Food
Bank and assisted with her application
for food stamps. Ms.
Ruiz was told that the application
for food stamps would take
30 to 60 days before it would
take effect.
The family was struggling
to make ends meet, so Ms. Ruiz
called Rivera to ask if MCH
could assist her with laundry
detergent and basic food to
receiving much-needed psychological
services. Hoyt is showing
marked improvement in
his development and will begin
preschool soon.
It took months of service and
commitment, but Destiny and
Hoyt are reaping the benefits of
the services provided by MCH.
zles, word search games, and
memory games to help her
daughter focus and concentrate.
Marie was able to use these
techniques with Grace and
it has worked to control her
ADHD symptoms. According
to Rivas, Marie and Grace are
happy and grateful for MCH’s
help. Grace is a healthy girl
with good self-esteem and she
is not taking any medication.
make sandwiches, which they
could live on until the food
stamps came through.
At her next home visit, Ms.
Ruiz was surprised when MCH
staff delivered $100 worth of
groceries and a large bottle of
laundry detergent. In addition,
MCH supplied the Ruiz family
with groceries for a special
meal for her family. According
to Rivera, Ms. Ruiz began to cry
and thanked MCH for supporting
her family.
James A. “Buddy” Davidson Charitable Foundation
makes $250,000 gift for MCH alumni scholarships
The James A. “Buddy” Davidson Charitable
Foundation of Midland has provided a
$250,000 grant to the Methodist Children’s
Home endowment in order to establish a
named scholarship fund. The earnings from
the James A. “Buddy” Davidson Scholarship
Fund will assist MCH alumni in attending
an accredited community college, four-year
university or career training program.
“This generous gift to the MCH endowment
will allow us to continue providing an
amazing opportunity for our young people to
fulfill their dreams of advanced education,”
said Trey Oakley, vice president for development.
“An endowed gift of this size testifies
to the hard work of our ministry to provide quality educational
opportunities, and we are grateful to the James A. ‘Buddy’
Davidson Charitable Foundation for its confidence and trust
in our mission.”
Last year, MCH awarded more than $500,000 in scholarship
assistance to MCH alumni.
“The opportunity to obtain an advanced degree was only
a dream for many of these youth before they arrived in our
care,” said Tim Brown, MCH president/CEO. “Some of these
students are the first in their family to graduate from high
school. The James A. ‘Buddy’ Davidson Scholarship Fund will
impact our young people for generations to come.”
MCH is grateful for this gift and those who share their
resources to help offer hope to children, youth and their families.
To learn more about making a gift to the MCH endowed
scholarship program, please contact Trey Oakley by e-mail at
A DAY TO REMEMBER
Devin and other youth at the Boys
Ranch enjoyed a day on the lake
during a special event in Fort Worth
hosted by In His Wakes Ministries.
Called “A Day to Remember,” the
event gives youth opportunities to
enjoy a variety of water sports and
hear Christian testimonies from the
staff. This is the second year MCH
has participated in the event.
