Subject: ADVANCED PHARMACOLOGY AND PHARMACOTHERAPEUTICS<br />
Practical: 8 hrs. /week<br />
1. Prerequisite for Pharmacology Practicals:<br />
In this module it is expected student should know general principles, techniques and<br />
strategies for pharmacological screening <strong>of</strong> drugs, animal care, handling, ethical<br />
requirements and regulations therein.<br />
2. Basic Experimental Techniques:<br />
1. Standard techniques collection <strong>of</strong> blood samples and feeding <strong>of</strong> animals<br />
2. Administration <strong>of</strong> drugs by different routes in mice<br />
3. Use <strong>of</strong> anaesthetics and cannulation <strong>of</strong> veins, arteries, trachea<br />
3. Experiments on intact animals:<br />
1. To study locomotor activity by using Actophotometer.<br />
2. To evaluate analgesic activity <strong>of</strong> drug using tail flick latency test.<br />
3. To determine the effect <strong>of</strong> carrageen induced edema in rats by using digital<br />
Plethysmometer.<br />
4. To study the anticonvulsant effect <strong>of</strong> Phenobarbitone against MES induced convulsio ns<br />
in rats.<br />
5. To determine the analgesic effect by using Eddy‟s hot plate.<br />
6. To study effect <strong>of</strong> pentabarbitone sodium on righting reflex (hypnosis) in mice.<br />
7. To study Anti-anxiety effect <strong>of</strong> diazepam in mice using elevated plus maze apparatus.<br />
8. To study the Apomorphine induced compulsive behaviour (Stereotype) in mice.<br />
9. To study the muscle relaxant property <strong>of</strong> Diazepam in mice using rotarod.<br />
10. To study amnesic (loss <strong>of</strong> memory) effect <strong>of</strong> drug using passive avoidance step-down<br />
task paradigm in mice.<br />
11. To study the antidepressant effect <strong>of</strong> drug using forced swimming test apparatus.<br />
4. Toxicity Studies:<br />
1. Regulations and guidelines <strong>of</strong> toxicity studies<br />
2. Method <strong>of</strong> calculation <strong>of</strong> ED50 and LD50<br />
3. Observation <strong>of</strong> behavioral changes in animals during acute and sub acute toxicity study <strong>of</strong><br />
test drug.<br />
5. Practicals using computer s<strong>of</strong>tware’s :<br />
In this module it is expected student should know working <strong>of</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware and setting <strong>of</strong><br />
physiologic and animal experimentation and perform at least four experiments fro m<br />
following or others-<br />
1. To record temperature using thermal transducer<br />
