Subject: MOLECULAR PHARMACOLOGY AND TOXICOLOGY<br />

THEORY: 60 Hours (4 hrs. /week)<br />

1. Molecular mechanism <strong>of</strong> drug action: Receptor occupancy and cellular signaling<br />

systems such as G-proteins, cyclic nucleotides, calcium and phosphatidyl inositol. Ionic<br />

channels and their modulators.<br />

2. Endogenous bioactive molecules such as cytokines, neuropeptides and their<br />

modulators, neurosteroids, nitric oxide, phosphodiestrase enzyme and protein kinase C,<br />

arachidonic acid metabolites.<br />

3. Recent trends on different classes <strong>of</strong> receptors and drugs acting on them<br />

Angiotensin receptors, Excitatory amino acid receptors, Kinin receptors, Adrenoceptors,<br />

Low molecular weight heparins, Imidazole receptors, Cholinergic receptors, Dopamine<br />

receptors, Serotonin receptors, Hormone receptors, GABA receptors, Purinergic receptors,<br />

Glutamate receptors.<br />

4. Ion channel and their modulators: calcium, potassium, sodium and chloride channels<br />

5. Basic Concepts <strong>of</strong> Chronopharmacology and their implications to Drug Therapy. .<br />

6. Concept <strong>of</strong> gene therapy and recent development in the treatment <strong>of</strong> various hereditary<br />

diseases. Transgenic mouse and its applications. Human genome mapping and its potential<br />

in drug research.<br />

7. Toxicology: Principles <strong>of</strong> toxicology, elementary knowledged <strong>of</strong> systemic toxicology,<br />

manifestation <strong>of</strong> toxicology, Management and treatment <strong>of</strong> poisoning, immunotoxicity,<br />

toxic effect on genetic material and cell proliferation, non therapeutic toxicants, air<br />

pollutants, solvents, vapour and pesticides toxicity, food additives and contaminant toxicity,<br />

heavy metal toxicity, toxins <strong>of</strong> animal origin, radiations and radioactive material toxicity,<br />

adverse drug reactions, toxicity <strong>of</strong> drug overdosing and its management.<br />
