Te Awamutu Fire Brigade is again participating in the annual Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge next month and will be out rattling the buckets to raise funds this Saturday. On Saturday, May 22, 420 firefighters will race to the top of Auckland’s iconic Sky Tower. In its seventh year, the Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge is a New Zealand tradition. The event attracts hundreds of firefighters from around New Zealand and overseas who race to the top for the chance to claim fastest man, fastest woman and fastest team. Last year’s street collection and fundraising from the Te Awamutu community allowed the Brigade to take an amazing cheque for over $4,000 to present to the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation and contribute to the record total of $148,000 raised by all the participating brigades from all parts of the country. Te Awamutu Fire Brigade has a consistent history of having a good number of participants. This year is no different and with training well underway, they have nine competitors with two competing in the event for the sixth time and three competing in the nerve racking first time. In 2009, 365 New Zealand firefighters and firefighters from Australia and the US, raced up 51 flights — or 1,103 Sky Tower steps — wearing full firefighting kit and breathing apparatus weighing up to 25kg. This year it will again be an intense gutbusting challenge up to the top and to raise funds for the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation. The Te Awamutu Fire Brigade is proud to support the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation who utilise these funds to contribute towards patient support for the 10,000 New Zealanders living with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood condition, services which cost more than $1,000 a day to provide! Te Awamutu Fire Brigade will be collecting money from the community on Saturday from 11am to 3pm. They will be walking round most of the residential streets in the Te Awamutu township, going door-to-door with the fire trucks following behind. The fire trucks will be decked out with Leukaemia and Blood Foundation posters and have the beacons and sirens (noncontinuous) operating to draw attention to the appeal. Several Brigade personnel will be accepting donations for the Foundation in the town’s main centre along Alexandra Street. Any contributions from the collection will be greatly appreciated by the Brigade and every cent will be handed over to the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation which receives no Government funding, and relies entirely on fundraising activities and support and donations of individuals. ANZAC Day remembrance retains relevance for young and old TC290410GJ02 RETURNED services personnel received spontaneous applause from the crowd at Sunday’s Civic Commemoration Service as they marched from ANZAC Green back to the RSA Clubrooms behind Te Awamutu Brass. BY GRANT JOHNSTON The high number of young eople who attended ANZAC ervices in Te Awamutu was cknowledged by service leader on Hallett at Sunday’s Civic ommemoration Service. Mr Hallett’s contribution, hich saw him travel from his new home’ Orewa for the 14th ear to officiate at Te Awamutu ervices, was in turn acknowedged by Te Awamutu RSA presient, David Haberfield. Mr Haberfield acknowledged he assistance of all those who had elped make the Te Awamutu ervices such a success, and in articular his vice president Terry inlay. Mr Haberfield commended this ear’s PA system, which he said as a huge improvement on other ears. Mr Haberfield said it was gratifying to see the ever increasing numbers turning out for ANZAC parades and Armistice Day commemorations on November 11. He said the services were not about celebrating war, as some would claim, but about commemorating the fallen. Mr Haberfield read out the names of local Defence Force personnel serving overseas — Corporal Angela Blackwell in East Timor, Lance Corporal Makarena Tupaea in East Timor, Leading Combat System Specialist Stacey Rasmussen in the Gulf States, Private Cameron Barrie in Afghanistan and Lance Corporal Hohua Subritzky in Afghanistan. Parade Marshall David Bowler said 100 veterans marched at the Dawn Parade and 120 at the Civic Commemoration Service, including uniformed personnel currently serving in the Defence Forces. Mr Haberfield noted that the traditional after service function at St Patrick’s Hall was not held this year ‘‘for a number of reasons, the main one being viability’’. Waipa Mayor Alan Livingston acknowledged the efforts of Te Awamutu RSA and supporters. He made special mention of the First Health Company (which has a charter with Te Awamutu) for the support provided at services like Sunday’s.
