Entrance<br />
When approach<strong>in</strong>g a build<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> effect of <strong>the</strong><br />
facade when seen from afar generally gives way<br />
to <strong>the</strong> impression produced by <strong>the</strong> entrance <strong>area</strong>.<br />
Entrances can be marked us<strong>in</strong>g architectural<br />
elements or signage – but also by light<strong>in</strong>g ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />
as a support<strong>in</strong>g or a dom<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g medium. <strong>Light</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> entrance is <strong>the</strong> nocturnal visit<strong>in</strong>g card<br />
of a build<strong>in</strong>g; it creates a unique atmosphere<br />
and facilitates orientation. The easiest option to<br />
guide <strong>the</strong> way <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g with light is to<br />
ensure that <strong>the</strong> light<strong>in</strong>g level here is higher than<br />
<strong>in</strong> adjacent <strong>area</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g. A “welcome<br />
mat“ – a light carpet at <strong>the</strong> entrance – serves as<br />
a gesture <strong>in</strong>vit<strong>in</strong>g visitors to enter. Additional<br />
diffuse light, produced, for example, by vertical<br />
illum<strong>in</strong>ance <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> entrance <strong>area</strong>, softens hard<br />
shadows on <strong>the</strong> faces to provide a pleasant basis<br />
for <strong>in</strong>itial communication at <strong>the</strong> door. In terms<br />
of orientation, <strong>the</strong> use of wallwash<strong>in</strong>g also has<br />
<strong>the</strong> advantage that it is highly visible even from<br />
a distance. Graz<strong>in</strong>g light can lend a dramatic<br />
effect to <strong>the</strong> entrance scene. Pathway and stair<br />
lum<strong>in</strong>aires ensure safe walk<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> way <strong>in</strong>,<br />
while harmonised light<strong>in</strong>g levels create a pleasant<br />
balance between <strong>the</strong> front and background<br />
that enhances <strong>the</strong> overall impression and makes<br />
it easier on <strong>the</strong> eye to adapt when enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
